Specifically there’s a lady I know through a friend who has always had moderate acne the whole time I’ve known her. It’s cleared up lately and she looks radiant and im desperate to know her secret but I know it’s be so bloody rude of me!

So im going to ask on here instead - how did you get rid of adult acne?
I’ve just started my second round of roaccutane. I bailed on the first round and only did three months so sadly the effects didn’t last long. I’m hoping to stick it out this time but I’m only on a low dose and worried it’s not going to be a permenant cure. That said I’m reluctant to up the dose as I’m scared of the side effects.

It's never been very bad, but it's hormonal as it happens the week before my periods. Evening primrose oil, as a daily supplement, really helped as well as avoiding chocolate!!

bananafish81 · 14/12/2018 17:15

Duac (topical benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin), Treclin (topical tretinoin and clindamycin) and oral Lymecycline

Good luck with the Roaccutane - hoping it does the trick

As with Biber, the menopause works wonders!

bananafish81 · 14/12/2018 17:18

This was prescribed by a consultant cosmetic dermatologist who advised that diet would not make a significant difference to my acne and did not recommend oil products for my skin

She recommended La Roche Posay Toleraine dermo cleanser for cleansing twice daily

loubluee · 14/12/2018 17:19

It’s still nice to know people use the term ‘pizza face’🙄

Mine’s meds related unfortunately. Looking at changing my one med however the other option has more side effects. I’m also breaking out all over my back. Funny enough just showed exdp it whilst he was here, as me and (now) dp was talking about it last night, and I said it hadn’t been this bad since my late teens. He said it looked like a constellation of stars, and advised me not to wear a backless dress this Christmas lol.

mintbiscuit · 14/12/2018 17:22

Dianette. Mine is hormonal and responds well to androgen blockers. Does not respond to topical meds, diet alterations or skincare routine. Bah humbug.

Following with interest

Mine was hormonal and has improved so so much since taking evening primrose oil supplements, drinking peppermint tea (all day long) and taking collagen supplements.

I bet of you did ask the lady she wouldn't mind - I know I don't mind of people ask me. Acne can be very difficult.

Marychristmastome · 14/12/2018 17:25

It starts in the gut, which can be affected by stress.
Cut sugar and alcohol, drink loads of water and take a probiotic and cut stress (yoga is great for this).
Keep skin scrupulously clean as bacteria won't help - I let my face dry naturally rather than use a towel.

I just started using roaccutane a few weeks ago. I've had acne over 20 years and it's knocked my confidence so much. It's not so much on my face but my back is disgusting and I get some on my chest.

I've tried everything else I possibly could over the years, I kept on getting refused for roaccutane as they said because it was usually covered with clothes they would rather not have me going through the side effects.

Finally got a dr to refer me a few months ago and I've now started. The side effects are horrible, my muscles ache, my skin is flaking, I've scratched under my chest so much it's weeping, my lips feel like thick leather and crack if I laugh or open my mouth too wide and I do feel it's now starting to effect my mood.

I'm determined to see it thorough though, the thought of buying a top as I like it rather than just because it'll cover my acne up is keeping me going.

GreenandBlueButterfly · 14/12/2018 17:32

Someone here recommended DalacinT. I think it was Schadenfreude, but I might be wrong. In any case, I'm eternally grateful to the person who recommended it

Inthetropics · 14/12/2018 17:39

I took roaccutane when i was a teen for about 10 months and it helped a lot but i still had some acne.

Nowadays i cleanse and use a leave-in tonic for oily skin everynight after having a shower and right before going to bed and only wash my face when i get up the bext morning and this keeps me acne-free. If i fail one day i have acne.

Inthetropics · 14/12/2018 17:40

bext =next

Clinique anti blemish solution. Cleanse, tone and moisturise every morning and night. I struggled so much with my skin, I used it for 6 weeks and my skin was clear. Not had a bout of acne since, and I was able to stop using the products years ago without it returning. There was also a tiny tube of stuff you put directly on the spot, and it was amazing. I don't know if they still do it, but wow. Even my DH stole that one from me

greencatbluecat · 14/12/2018 17:45

Pregnancy or reducing sugar in my diet (including fruit).

MrsPatmore · 14/12/2018 17:50

Used to use Dianette now use Cerazette contraceptive pills. Spot free since 30's.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 14/12/2018 17:54

Using nothing but soap

NannyMcfanny · 14/12/2018 18:04

I cut down on sugary foods and used a coffee scrub.
I don't buy it I make it, it works so well!
Now I just leave some on a new spot when I first notice it and they rarely come to anything.

QueenGoblin · 14/12/2018 18:08

Mine mostly cleared up from various prescriptions a few years ago. Skin has gone haywire since my son was born. I've been avoiding going back to the doctors but I can't avoid it anymore. Skincare only does so much.

FairportConvention · 14/12/2018 18:10

Doxycycline antibiotics. Tried all the diet/skincare in the world and nothing worked. Doctor put me on doxy and it works wonders.

NannyMcfanny · 14/12/2018 18:10

Oh yes and stopped using soaps and face wash.

Lindorballs · 14/12/2018 18:20

I wouldn’t say I had full blown acne but I was getting hormonal chin spots that were hard to completely shift until a few months ago. I’ve changed my skin care routine quite a bit. Cleanse with a salicylic acid cleanser morning followed by salicylic acid solution (I use one by the ordinary) on problem areas, Superdrug hydrating toner and la Roche posay moisturiser.
Evening double cleanse (one of the cleaners is oil based), salicylic again, niacinamide and zinc serum, Vichy normaderm on problem areas then a night cream. Use a BHA exfoliating toner every couple of days and deep cleansing mask once a week. Sound very involved but takes less than 5 mins in the morning and about 10 mins in the evening.
I also take cod liver oil caps and use a fresh flannel every day.
I still get a few hormonal spots before my period and around ovulation but much much better and no big deep spots anymore. All of the products are

U2HasTheEdge · 14/12/2018 18:26

I have had no luck with anything so starting roaccutane tomorrow. Picked up the prescription today. I have tried pretty much everything else with no real success.

Spironolactone worked pretty well and was the best out of everything I tried but not quite good enough.

driggle · 14/12/2018 18:28

Oxytetracycline. Sorts my skin out within two weeks. And my Pill, Cilest, has improved my skin. As soon as I stop taking the Pill, my skin goes to shit again.

BotherationBuggeration · 14/12/2018 18:34

I went on the pill, went from disgusting huge deep pustules all over my neck and back to none within two weeks of starting it.
