Specifically there’s a lady I know through a friend who has always had moderate acne the whole time I’ve known her. It’s cleared up lately and she looks radiant and im desperate to know her secret but I know it’s be so bloody rude of me!

So im going to ask on here instead - how did you get rid of adult acne?
I’ve just started my second round of roaccutane. I bailed on the first round and only did three months so sadly the effects didn’t last long. I’m hoping to stick it out this time but I’m only on a low dose and worried it’s not going to be a permenant cure. That said I’m reluctant to up the dose as I’m scared of the side effects.

I had a nasty bout a few months ago - that touch wood is under control! I swapped my fancy skincare products out for, Valderma (an old fashioned simple anti-bacterial soap) witch hazel to tone and remove make up, Simple moisturiser and Vicco cream (which I think is a turmeric based skincare cream I got from my DP's Mum as its an Indian product!

I also starting taking Zinc tablets to help with skin recovery and redness :) I also cut down on my dairy intake, there's a direct correlation for me.

The same won't work for everyone but I do think its worth stripping back on fancy skincare products, and going as natural and simple as you can :) hope this helps!

I cleanse, tone and moisturise religiously. Never go to bed with make up on, I use Liz Earle cleanse and polish as it suits my skin.

I also have monthly microdermabrasion which has really helped and also faded old scarring.

Eloisedublin123 · 14/12/2018 16:09

I had it for 10 years until 3 months ago. A lady on here told me the secret. Zz cream. Google it!

Lizadork · 14/12/2018 16:10

Cut dairy from diet for a while.

BanginChoons · 14/12/2018 16:10

Accutane for me. I have clear skin for the first time in 20 years.

hazeyjane · 14/12/2018 16:11

2 courses of Erythromycin have helped mine (for now...I know it can be temporary)

MrsBungle · 14/12/2018 16:13

Roaccutane cleared mine after having it since I was 11. Remained clear since bar the odd spot,

fartfacemcfartfaceface · 14/12/2018 16:14

I've had 2 courses of roaccutane since being a teenager, after my second pregnancy it is now back, and I had a similar thread on here a while back. I'm still struggling!!

Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine. Turned my
Pizza faced neighbour into a porcelin faced one in a few weeks.

Fibbertigibbet · 14/12/2018 16:15

I use a topical tretinoin and clindamycin gel (Treclin). Absolutely works wonders.

Alann01 · 14/12/2018 16:17

I stopped drinking cows milk

Tippytappytoes · 14/12/2018 16:25

Not 100% sure that it was this, but it cleared up around the time I stopped my periods using the depo injection (along with my face numbing brain killing migraines which was the reason for stopping them).

Gobblebox · 14/12/2018 16:25

If it’s caused by oily skin you need to include oil in your regime. That’s how I got rid of mine. Oil cleansing with hot cloth and using jojoba oil at night. Jojoba oil mimics the skins natural
Oil and tricks the skin into thinking it doesn’t need to produce so much....result is less oil production and less oily skin/spots. Worked for me when my face started to pump out oil in my late 30s and the subsequent acne was relentless. I don’t even have acne as a teen so was a shocker. All gone now thanks to the above.

Roaccutaine in my mid 20s. It was awful at the time, I absolutely hated it, but it was worth it. My skin cleared up completely and I have had very few spots since (and I had horrible nasty under the skin huge things). Being zit free totally boosted my confidence and I ended up requalifying for the career I was too insular to go for when I was younger. Stick with it, it can be a life changer.

pastabest · 14/12/2018 16:37

Swapped to entirely non-comedogenic make up
Clean pillowcases and bedcovers regularly
Kept hair off my face
Stopped touching my face and resting my chin in my hands

I've gone from having pretty much permanent acne patches around my jawline and cheeks to the occasional hormonal spit every few months.

Diet diet diet

Try an elimination diet for a few months and find out what is causing it!

Quinoderm for when it does breakout seems to kill anything and dry the spots out. Be careful it bleaches things it touches and also itches like fuck. So worth it though. DONT GET IT NEAR YOUR EYES.

And the contraceptive pill to prevent mostly

Viggooooh · 14/12/2018 16:43

I used roaccutane in my 20s and it worked, cleared up my skin but then when I came off the pill and my periods started again (took 6 months after coming off pill) my acne came back with a vengeance. I still struggle to this day, mine is definitely hormonal. The pill helps but after having my last child I decided I didn’t want to go back on it. I researched and have found estroblock supplements. You can find information online. The active ingredient is DIM. Other brands are also available. I take the 2 x strongest dose pills daily (built up dose slowly) along with a good liver supplement. This has cleared up my acne.

Biber · 14/12/2018 16:52

The menopause worked for me.

mishmash13 · 14/12/2018 16:57

Dreadful cystic acne went through everything in the world to help - two courses of roaccutane and finally spot free since late 20s. For info - I have a PhD in nutrition and there is currently no solid evidence base for dietary causes or treatment of acne. It's a crap enough condition without the 'if only I ate healthier/went vegan/ate organic' stick to beat ourselves with.

Grapetree · 14/12/2018 16:59

Jojoba oil mimics the skins natural Oil and tricks the skin into thinking it doesn’t need to produce so much....

I’m happy you found something that works for you ... but that is a sweeping statement and there is no evidence to suggest skin works like this ??

Op, there is a medication called spironolactone which can help with female hormonal acne when Roaccutane hasn’t been as successful

ShitOnItt · 14/12/2018 17:08

I was prescribed Epiduo by my GP and my skin has never looked clearer. I had really bad hormonal acne around my mouth and on my cheeks but 6 weeks in it’s virtually non existent.

I’ve also been using The Body’s Shop seaweed cleanser and toner, and Ultrasun moisturiser as the Epiduo is very drying.

Good luck!

Santababyclaus · 14/12/2018 17:10

3 months of oral antibiotics and topical antibiotics twice a day. Never had acne since (nearly 10 years now). My skin will never be clear (I have a lot of blackheads) but I rarely have pussy spots now.
