It's because it goes through as an MMS. SMS was an afterthought tacked onto GSM and never intended as a proper messaging system (it doesn't guarantee delivery) and was originally specced to only use a basic alphabet. Later it was extended to Unicode including some emojis but the implementation is not fully realised.
The solution to the problem is to use a messaging system designed for it like WhatsApp or iMessage
