Son wants to go to school in his onsie - aibu

Just sounding this out. Tomorrow is a school Christmas jumper/wear your own clothes day for charity - they pay £1 for the privilege. Son doesn’t have a christmas jumper and I’m a bit miffed i have to buy one - it seems stupid to me to fork out maybe £15 or so for one day so the charity gets £1. He wants to wear his onsie which looks like a reindeer - which I’m not keen on - but would save my forking out 15 quid for a stupid one day in the year jumper - bah humbug. Would folk go for the onsie even though I’m not keen - pissibly slightly less keen on the useless jumper idea the school has come up with though.

Yuk no if he’s at primary school. Do you know the state of the toilets? I can’t imgine what state the onesie will be by the end of the day.

School hasn't come up with it, Save the Children has. DS2 has worn the same Christmas jumper every cold day since October '17. Next winter I'll get him a bigger one. I think the onesie would be fine.

Let him wear the onesie and if it is cold long sleeve T shirt and Trousers under. Or thin jogging bottoms if he has them.

Depending on age, it’s fine.

I was very Hmm at my immature 22 year old colleague coming to work (office) in a onesie because he had nothing else to wear. We don’t have to wear work clothes but that is just taking the piss. This was a normal day, not a Christmas Jumper or costume day.

Just so long as the school hasn't issued guidelines on what can and cant be worn. Ours has been quite specific and it has to be a jumper or cardigan Sad

Onsies don't normally cover your feet except baby onsies! Children and adult ones are just normal trouser leg things. He isn;t going to have piss soaked feet any more than if he was wearing joggers.

He’s 13, i just don’t want him standing out for the wrong reasons but resent being pressured into wasting money on a jumper - especially as the charity only gets a £1

If you can wear your own clothes, just do that. People might comment on a 13 year old wearing a onesie.

At 13 I'm not sure it's a fantastic idea, especially if he has to travel in it. I'd be more inclined just to try and jazz up a jumper that he has, or pretend you've forgotten about it.

At 13 probably a bit difficult, but can you add baubles and tinsel to a jumper he already has? Few safety pins and add some bits? School gets the quid, and you don’t have to spend on a new jumper??

I agree though, I paid similar last year for a few sizes to big jumper to last a few years, but I don’t agree with it. I think the real winners in it are the shops selling the jumpers.

at 13 I'd let him wear his own clothes and maybe a santa hat, or reindeer glasses/antlers but not a onesie

unless he is a super cool kid who could pull that off Grin

My teens don't have Christmas jumpers, they wear a green hoodie/red hoodie and maybe a santa hat

DD1 is 13, she and her friends have decided to wear Christmas jumpers with their pyjamas.

DD2's school says they have to wear the rest of the uniform with the jumper, so a onesie wouldn't work there.

So check the rules, and also what your DS wants to do. If it's general non-uniform, and he wants to wear it, then fine.

OP DC were telling me their teacher was in a reindeer onesie yesterday, trying to discipline the lunch queue with zero success because reindeer! A 13 yr old will be fine in a onesie.

If he's 13 then he's probably old enough to have 'read the room' and know how his classmates will react, so I'll allow it. Most kids will probably find it hilarious/ a bit of a one up at the teachers.
