to abhor fancy dress to the nth degree? (light-hearted)

Inspired by another thread, but a different question. Am I alone in hating fancy dress with a passion? I know lots of people find fancy dress events fun so I'm not suggesting they shouldn't happen, but Gawd I hate the pressure to put a stupid costume on for a special occasion when I'd much rather pick out a really nice 'normal' outfit from my wardrobe, I don't get to wear my going-out clothes enough as it is.

I hated being randomly asked to turn up at work as a Roald Dahl character/in a Christmas jumper/as something 'spooky' when I was office-based (hurrah for self-employment!), and if I had kids I couldn't be doing with these 'please send your child to school tomorrow dressed as an Elizabethan/invertebrate/piece of fruit' type diktats that seem to get issued quite a lot from what I can gather on here. Makes me sound like a grinch, I know, but it's the logistics and the hassle of the thing, all for one day. I eschew fancy-dress parties (well, I eschew the fancy dress code anyway) for the same reason ... if other people enjoy them that's great, let them have fun, but no I shan't be coming as a goose or in my home town's football colours or as a member of minor Royalty, I shall be sporting my favourite LBD and nice 'special-occasion' hair and makeup and there's nothing you can do about it. Grin

I'm sure it can't just be me??

I'm the same

Not just you. I hate it. Enforced jollity

foxtiger · 13/12/2018 12:35

yeah I hate it too, for the reason mrbob said. It kind of reminds me of thinks like children's entertainers and being made to do the Hoky Coky, etc, which is not a very happy set of associations for me. I hate being made to join in with things I find a bit silly! Unfortunately DH loves it and will spend hours creating a costume. It is the one area where we are totally incompatible! Oddly enough I do really like "dressing up" in the other sense and like nothing better than having a party or special occasion to go to where I can really go overboard with nice accessories and make-up, etc. My style is quite eccentric, but it definitely isn't fancy dress!

For me I suppose the irony is that I'm in an amateur dramatics group, so you'd kinda expect me to be a fan of daft costumes Grin but nope, the costumes are the one part of putting on a show that I really have to grin and bear as I hate it in that context too! lol
