To say something about religious nativity play?

The DC go to a private day nursery. It doesn't have a religious affiliation. It was their Christmas play today. They did a loose version of the nativity and then at the end, there was a bit of recitation - "and that baby Jesus grew up to do amazing miracles. He died to save all the people in the world. Christians believe he came back from the dead and everyone who finds Jesus will be happy."

Dd who is under 4 is now asking "what does it mean, Jesus died?" And "should we go and look for Jesus?"

Aibu to mention to nursery management that this has resulted in some awkward conversations and maybe next year, they could choose something non-religious, bearing in mind lots of the families that use the nursery aren't believing Christians?

We is explaining about death so difficult. We have talked about it since dd was very little and went to relatives funerals. At first it meant very little to her but as she has got older she began to accept it as a sad fact of life.
As for the Nativity the non-religious rubbish that passed as a Christmas story in primary school used to annoy me.Give me little children dresses in tinsel halos and tea towel shepherds any day.

Snooky1 · 14/12/2018 13:00

Personally I get a bit offended with people who don't want the nativity.
If your not Christian I support you and you have a right to chose, but then don't celebrate Christmas.
If you are celebrating Christmas, that's great just remember you are celebrating the birth of christ.
I was super glad to to see my dd school still does the nativity. I hate when school announce they don't celebrate any religious festivals and don't put a nativity on but yet the school is full of tinssle and Christmas tress. Hmm

I think the original druids would fit the social control idea.
Wicca doesn't. It's a reaction against organised religion. You never know though, it could be adopted as a method of social control too. Particularly in a post eco disaster age.

Parker231 · 14/12/2018 13:07

Snooky - Christmas means different things to different people. We celebrate Christmas as extra time with family and friends, time off work, special food and drinks, parties and presents. We don’t celebrate Christmas as the birth of Christ, as we don’t believe that.

heartsofgold · 14/12/2018 17:30

I agree that Christianity seems to get knocked these days. Strange when you consider the problems with other religions.

derxa · 14/12/2018 17:49

About knowing your place, about obeying and respecting those who Great Pumpkin has chosen as special, etc? You do have a very bitter outlook on life Reanimated Chill out and have a happy Christmas Grin

UterusUterusGhali · 14/12/2018 17:54

Bullshit.

Nobody actually thinks this.

duckeggbluenotblue · 14/12/2018 17:55

YABU / RIDICULOUS

kayakingmum · 14/12/2018 18:16

Another vote for the primary school. What they did was absolutely fine. Not OTT at all.

Oakenbeach · 14/12/2018 18:28

Birds, they are all bullshit and all attract violent, dangerous wingnuts

You could say the same about anything that involves people... Atheist politicians have been more responsible for more deaths in the last 100 years than any religious ones (Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, the Kims etc).... doesn’t mean atheism or politics is wrong!

Cubrrt · 14/12/2018 21:37

If your not Christian I support you and you have a right to chose, but then don't celebrate Christmas.

Here we go again Hmm

Most of the "Christmas" traditions that non-Christians indulge in (feasting, gift exchange, gathering with friends and family, decorating your home) are diddly-squat to do within Christianity and happened at this time of year long before Jesus was allegedly born. They were originally pagan customs that Christianity engulfed as part of its evangelicalism and are nothing to do with your religion.

So, if you're going to take a hard line and say non-Christians shouldn't be allowed to celebrate, then I'd ask you to keep your mitts off of the non-Christian elements of the season and just sit around saying how great Jesus was. You can have your advent calendars and we can litigate ownership of Santa.

Poloshot · 14/12/2018 21:38

It's what the story is about. Are you being serious?

Cubrrt · 14/12/2018 21:42

It's been covered a few times; OP meant 'religious nursery play'.

BartholinsSister · 14/12/2018 21:45

Atheist politicians have been more responsible for more deaths in the last 100 years than any religious ones (Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, the Kims etc)

Hitler was a Christian.

Cubrrt · 14/12/2018 21:56

Hitler was a Christian.
No, he wasn't. He was a vocal critic of Christianity and was probably non-religious.

BartholinsSister · 14/12/2018 22:33

Hitler was baptized, confirmed, and later claimed to be a Christian in his book Mein Kampf, and referenced his Christianity in numerous documented speeches.
Nevertheless he did have issues with the church as an organization, moreso as his career progressed.

ChainVaper · 14/12/2018 23:00

Blah blah blah . It’s Christmas FFS

Oakenbeach · 14/12/2018 23:00

Hitler’s religious views were ambivalent and unclear.... but even if he is removed from the list, atheist leaders have led the way in genocide and mass-murder over the past century.

BartholinsSister · 14/12/2018 23:02

Ironically, combined they don't come close to the terror and genocide delivered by the god of the Bible.

Cubrrt · 14/12/2018 23:41

Indeed. Horrible fella by all accounts.

heartsofgold · 15/12/2018 11:06

We have nearly 50% Muslims at my DC's school, their parents would probably gently tell a wingnut vicar to fuck off.
Better than being told that all Christians should be beheaded.

Philomensapie · 15/12/2018 11:23

None of the Muslims I know think like that, in fact none of them in the school do, no Muslim parents have ever opted their children out of the nativity play or Christmas concert, or assemblies or church visit. Xmas Hmm

tillytrotter1 · 15/12/2018 11:28

What other kind of Nativity can there be other than a religious one? Anything else is simply a school play.

Philomensapie · 15/12/2018 12:01

Cancel the cheque.

catkind · 15/12/2018 12:13

The normal kind without preachy asides to audience taking a stand about the truth value of what they've been watching. 6/7 of the ones my kids were involved in were preach-free so it's not exactly radical.
