And this is why I love mumsnet Grin

Modwolvesrock · 11/12/2018 14:17

I'm so jealous, squirrels are lovely Smile

StressedToTheMaxx · 11/12/2018 14:25

Aww bless!
My mum used to put out nuts for the birds and one of the squirrels learned to turn the whole tube upside down onto the ground.
She now puts out seeds. They don't seem just as interested in them.... for now

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 11/12/2018 14:27

Oh he's little sugar plum.

MsSquiz · 11/12/2018 14:32

We recently had a rat in our back garden (unearthed by a house behind us extending and digging up their garden) and one morning I watched him climb up through the hedge, jump into a tree, edge his way along the branch and helped himself to the bird seed!

I didn't know whether to be gutted we had a new resident rat or impressed at his skills!

DingDongDenny · 11/12/2018 14:46

My MIL had rats, the food she left out for the birds attracted them. I once looked out her kitchen window and there were 4 rats in the bushes next to the house Shock

Sparklingbrook · 11/12/2018 14:48

I bought some Monkey Nuts for the squirrels to distract them from the bird feeder.

One squirrel spent the afternoon burying the whole lot in our back lawn one by one. Hmm

Bestseller · 11/12/2018 14:52

Grey Squirrels arent lovely, they're vermin. They do terrible damage and the disease they carry has all but wiped out our red squirrels. Where I work, the van has been put out of action three times in the last month by squirrels chewing wires.

Autumnbloom · 11/12/2018 14:55

@Sparklingbrook I've heard somewhere that they can remember the location of 20,000 items they have buried...not sure if it's true or not, but I bet the 20,001 item really frustrates them!

KittensAndChristmasCake · 11/12/2018 15:01

Grey Squirrels arent lovely, they're vermin.

They're creatures, trying to survive - the same as all creatures.
Humans fault the grey squirrel came here anyway, not theirs.
Lovely pic, OP 😍

maerd · 11/12/2018 15:06

I keep telling my neighbour to use bird feeders if she must insist on feeding the squirrels. Instead she just scatters peanuts on the ground. The only wildlife that is attracting is my dogs and probably a parade of rats.

granof3 · 11/12/2018 15:12

Fab photo OP.
Squirrels just make me smile.
Cheeky chaps of the woodland world.

Sparklingbrook · 11/12/2018 15:12

20,000 items? Shock Autumn.

To give him his due he has buried them and I can't see where. Grin

Roobub · 11/12/2018 15:47

Yes, I think that's right about the 20,000 items. They said it on Autumn Watch so it must be true!
Very cute OP.

CheshireChat · 11/12/2018 16:08

The ones at our park are incredibly friendly, to the point one climbed on me.

Cheeky squirrel
Sparklingbrook · 11/12/2018 16:15

There's a park in Chester where they come and sit on your knee and climb up your trouser leg. Shock

bakingdemon · 11/12/2018 16:26

@StressedToTheMaxx our squirrels have figured out how to do the same! They knock the peanut feeder off its hook and then scoff ALL the nuts. We consequently have England's fattest squirrels in our garden and keep a water pistol by the back door to deter them Grin

Craft1905 · 11/12/2018 16:31

Squirrels.....rats with good PR.

DeezMutts · 11/12/2018 16:38

Have you seen the video clips where the person has put Vaseline on the metal pole of the feeder to stop squirrels climbing up? Confused squirrels sliding back down the poles Grin

MsSquiz · 11/12/2018 17:15

My FIL has squirrel boxes high up in their pine trees in their back garden and high wires between the trees for them to keep out of they way of PIL's dog! FIL goes through tonnes of hazelnuts for them!

We only get red squirrels in our village, have never seen a grey one up here

knockknockknock · 11/12/2018 17:20

This is one of our local squirrels

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 11/12/2018 18:20

Hundreds of people in our prisons are vermin. We feed them...

KittensAndChristmasCake · 11/12/2018 18:46

Hundreds of people in our prisons are vermin. We feed them...

Absolutely.

Roobub · 11/12/2018 18:56

And even actual vermin like rats etc.... Not exactly their fault is it?! They're just trying to survive like all animals! I quite like little rattys anyway.

PickettBowtruckles · 11/12/2018 19:02

While we were in Florida last year this little guy used to come and harass us by the pool on a daily basis! He particularly enjoyed a seeds and nuts cereal bar and would literally sit on me begging until I gave in. Sometimes he’d stay and eat on me, others he’d run and hide the bits I gave him in the sandpit beside the pool and come back for me! I quite liked the little vermin... Grin
