Are all secondary school concerts like this or just ours?

If I'd had my eyes closed the school concert would have been great - a mix of super-talented, semi-talented and beginner musicians and singers showcasing their latest pieces. The problem is they all looked so miserable! I can only assume nobody has told them to smile and look like they're enjoying themselves. Surely that's a basic piece of fundamental advice, at least from the choir and singing group leader? Not all of them would follow it of course - there will always be a few nervous types - but surely it should be possible to get, say, 50% of the kids to look out into the audience and smile, rather than frowning into their hymn sheets? After all, this is secondary school - nobody is forced to take part. They've all volunteered to be there.

They are probably a bit nervous about performing and also concentrating on getting it right.

Well yes of course, but then that's why they need to be reminded to smile isn't it? Because it only comes naturally to a lucky few, but it's something that many others can learn.
