AIBU to think we can cancel Brexit and just pretend the entire embarassing spectacle never happened and carry on as before

The European Court of Justice has ruled that we can revoke Article 50 without needing consent from the rest of the EU. The EU would love us to stay.

Lawyer David Allen Green tweets
"If Brexit is cancelled, the sensible majority will pretend, with relief, that the entire embarrassing spectalce never happened.

And the minority can have their 'treachery' narrative which, frankly, is all they ever really wanted anyway. Everyone is happy"

What do you think?

I was working in Basildon during the referendum. For those that don't know, this is standard issue working class Tory heartland.
The remain campaign had posters and banners with the whole love thy neighbour spiel.
The leave campaign arrived on a bus with blaring music, lights, dancing girls, sporting-event-style chanting, etc, etc. It was a big party that you wanted to be a part of. The actual message content paled next to its delivery. I knew that instant which way this was going to go.

Holidayshopping · 11/12/2018 13:23

Holiday, I'm sort of glad you agree about the 'dead cat' theory because if that's what she's doing, it makes some sort of sense of the madness. On the other hand, HOW DARE SHE!!! It's all just a big game to them, isn't it? None of them give a shiny shit about anything other than their own careers and their own lovely legacy. It makes me sick*

I think you’re right.

I don’t think they give a shiny shit! If you are in the fortunately wealthy position some people are in, you’re fairly well cushioned from any nastiness really.

Interesting that Corbyn has been issued with an ultimatum of the end of the day to hold a vote of no confidence in May by the SNP, Plaid Cymru, Lib Dem and the Greens. I can’t see him doing that until TM’s deal has been voted down. Not sure what they’ll do tonight if JC does nothing?

Childrenofthesun · 11/12/2018 13:26

If my favourite political party didn't win the general election, I wouldn't want them to come to power anyway because that is not the type of country I want to live in.

Luckily you'd get a chance to vote again in 5 years in case the result of the previous election ended in total chaos and the party in power didn't live up to their promises....

Jasmin82 · 11/12/2018 13:26

If the SNP, Plaid Cymru, Lib Dems or Greens want a vote of no confidence, their MP's can actually submit the call for it. It doesn't need to be JC who submits it. Any MP can submit a call for a vote of no confidence. Makes you wonder why they want JC to do it.

Holidayshopping · 11/12/2018 13:31

I thought it had to be done by the leader of the opposition? Maybe they did too Grin

Girlofgold · 11/12/2018 13:35

Yes because it's not worth it. Any of the perceived benefits, although possible and I can see why some would want them are going to be bogged down in the quagmire of entrenched legalities. Not worth the pain.

Also, only a small majority and even then of the leavers how many were 100% for it? Most people had doubts about both arguments.

Jasmin82 · 11/12/2018 13:41

Holiday No, any MP can table a motion. A request for a debate and vote of no confidence is simply a motion. Also, the likes of the SNP and Lib Dems are technically opposition MPs as they aren't in government, so even if it was opposition only, they could still table the motion.

bellinisurge · 11/12/2018 14:02

Sadly we can't cancel it - I mean we obviously can but we won't.
If we are really " lucky " we'll get some cobbled together soft Brexit that will result in lots of grumbling, perhaps pockets of civil disorder but no actual melt down. "No Deal" would mean economic melt down.

Aquilla · 11/12/2018 14:18

Lucky the country's not full of Mumsnetters then, eh?
Tiny, small-minded, privileged, minority.

AndThereSaw · 11/12/2018 14:18

Brexit was always going to be financially disadvantageous.
More control of our own economy but losing a significant impact on a much larger one.
I don't think that May is as lost as she seems.
She's a remainer at heart because she can count.
She knows that Europe are never/were never going to give us a positive deal. It was always going to be net-negative.
She's done the best she can under the limitations imposed by the EU negotiators. meanwhile she asked the legal team if we could avoid brexit and if we could do it unilaterally.
Unusually, and for the first time ever, someone from the backbenches miraculously started a demand for the legal information to be released: never happened before. And lo, the legal information contains information about how we can avoid Brexit even though we invoked article 50.
She's a Machiavellian Genius!

howabout · 11/12/2018 14:24

Re motion of No Confidence. Ian Blackford said this morning SNP will do it if Labour don't by end of today. Widely derided as political posturing.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 11/12/2018 14:24

Theresa May could wake up and find a naked David Cameron in the shower.

Didn't they do that with Crossroads.
(I don't mean David Cameron naked in the shower) Grin.
I mean when I got binned off didn't they have it where a women had day dreamed it all while working on a check out.
Without wanting to turn this into a Supernatural thread.
How do we know this isnt all an illusion or dream.

Twillow · 11/12/2018 14:55

now that the unelexted EU overlords have shown their true colours

Do you think they should have gone down on one knee before our great nation, @Janedoe5000? Brexiteers really need to get it into their heads that the days of the British Empire are over (fortunately for not a few reasons). We are a tiny island and we should be partners with our neighbours.

Yes, what were those awful things imposed on us again...?

juneau · 11/12/2018 15:05

How do we know this isnt all an illusion or dream.

I think I'd call it a nightmare tbh!

CaraCarbonara · 11/12/2018 15:05

Awlookatmybabyspider - shower scene was Bobby in Dallas. I think Crossroads was when Meg was missing presumed dead on a cruise ship but turned up undeaded (or I could have dreamt that - am sure someone can clarify!)

Oh if only. I’d have a party.

Twillow · 11/12/2018 15:12

The thing is, no deal is suicide.
It's not even the temporary issues with bureaucracy and the port back-ups, it's the Irish border.

With or without the deal that is on the table, the border is a massive issue. There simply WILL NOT be checkpoints, not since the 1998 agreement that has more or less ended the troubles there.

So, with the deal, the backstop remains indefinitely. Which the government won't agree to, because it's 'not what the people voted for'.
Without the deal...well, that just can't happen because it's not possible to have Ireland in the EU and Northern Ireland outside the EU without a checkpoint border - which both the UK and Ireland have agreed not to have again.

MartaHallard · 11/12/2018 15:15

AIBU to think we can cancel Brexit and just pretend the entire embarassing spectacle never happened and carry on as before

In other words, AIBU to tell Leave voters that their votes don't count, and carry on calling them thickos and ignoring the reasons they voted Leave in the first place, and hope they'll stfu and go away? Yes, that'll make things all better.

ThomasRichard · 11/12/2018 15:34

I’m doing the Brexit briefings for a large multinational in a heavily-regulated industry. Frankly, it’s embarrassing having to tell my colleagues in other countries that my country’s government is in utter chaos. They’re all hoping we change our minds and stay anyway. It’s hardly undemocratic to ask the public what they want to do now they know what the options actually look like.

BarbarianMum · 11/12/2018 15:36

Well I certainly dont want to hear a squeak of complaint out of them if we do Brexit and its not everything they thought it would be Marta. They can quite frankly get stuffed if they find themselves worse off and want me to care.

LadyBathory · 11/12/2018 15:37

I wish they would! I moved abroad from the uk and I’m so scared me and my OH don’t earn enough to remain under proposed rules 27K he makes 12K so even if I matched his pay I we would be short! I want to raise my child outside the uk I was born in a British colonies and (no offense to anyone) I hated living in the uk my family never achieved anything but destitution despite hard work and education. It will take a couple of years for us to advance work wise but as March approaches I’m scared and angry 😡

Absofrigginlootly · 11/12/2018 15:40

Yes please

AIBU to think we can cancel Brexit and just pretend the entire embarassing spectacle never happened and carry on as before

Please let this happen! It’s like torture reading the posts on this thread as I agree with them, but somehow the PM is just trudging along acting like she had a 95% majority in the referendum and the decision is so clear cut.

Her refusal to acknowledge the view of remainers and treating this like a binary decision to leave without thoroughly investigating the different shades of grey between leaving and staying is infuriating.

But equally, I don’t want her to be booted out and replaced by BoJo or the odious JRM.

Ohmno · 11/12/2018 18:39

David Allen Green can go fuck himself vigorously with a sharp stick tbh
