Greasy hair makes your scalp sore

puddlesplashing · 10/12/2018 19:46

Ok, so random. And for the record I'm very clean shower daily and wash my hair every other day. However, I have noticed if I miss the second day of washing hair on the third day my scalp is very sore. It makes me wonder when I see people with there hair thick with grease. Such I weird thread I know. Just got me thinking 🤔

I agree. When I was at high school and wasn't allowed to have a shower in the morning, only in the evenings I remember my head being painful.

puddlesplashing · 10/12/2018 19:50

Glad it's not just me. It is painful. I don't know why lol.

Yeah I get this too. I thought maybe it was because the grease makes my hair heavier? It would be interesting to know the reason.

HoustonBess · 10/12/2018 19:54

I wash my hair roughly every four days and never get a sore head. Must be just you

puddlesplashing · 10/12/2018 19:58

@lostinjapan I wondered if that was the reason too. Weird thing to ask I know. Glad not just me lol

You might need a medicated anti fungal shampo. Fungal infections can hop in if there isn't enough of the usual skin flora, which most shampoos kill off.

lostinjapan · 10/12/2018 20:04

It’s an overgrowth of yeast apparently (yuck):

If you don’t wash your hair for awhile, oils that your scalp produces naturally accumulate around your hair shaft, promoting the overgrowth of yeast on your scalp, explains Joshua Zeichner, M.D., a New York City-based board-certified dermatologist and director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center. This can lead to skin inflammation which causes redness, itchiness, and scaliness. “In some patients, inflammation may manifest most with an ache,” he says.

@GraduationDilemma wow really. It's fine after I've washed it and make sure it's washed after 2 days. Just wondered if I was the only one.

@lostinjapan yuck. Least there's a reason ha

Mine is never sore (well I burnt it with bleach once or twice) and I wash it less than you.

RabbityMcRabbit · 10/12/2018 20:12

Yes me too! Thought it was just me lol!

bonzo77 · 10/12/2018 20:13

Admittedly my hair is not greasy, I wash it 2x a week. But if it gets greasy and I tie it back, letting it down is really uncomfortable.

autumnboys · 10/12/2018 20:17

I get seborrhoic dermatitis on my scalp, which makes it very sore sometimes. I have a medicated treatment and shampoo that really helps when I have a flare up. Haven’t noticed a connection to not washing my hair, but will be on the look out now!

puddlesplashing · 10/12/2018 20:30

So glad it's not just me. I washed mine Thursday night and by last night it was so sore. Wouldn't normally leave it that long for that reason.

I might try a shampoo for scalp conditions.

T-gel shampoo is fantastic. I get psoriasis on my scalp, and this keeps it at bay really well (& I love the smell as well - so clean and fresh). Give it a try OP, and see what you think..!?!

puddlesplashing · 10/12/2018 22:05

Never tried t-gel. Will deffo give it a go.

I last washed my hair 3 weeks ago maybe 2 and its not happened to me.

DinoGreen · 10/12/2018 22:37

Strange, get this too. Normally wash my hair every other day but if I leave it until day 3, my scalp hurts, particularly if I put my hair up in a ponytail (which I usually do because it's looking greasy by then). I've never really wondered why it happens because I know it goes away as soon as I wash it!

SierraSmythe · 10/12/2018 22:38

I get a very itchy, sensitive scalp if I don't wash as often as my scalp is used to. When my hair was straight it started after 4 days and with curly hair (so less frequent washing) it starts after a week.

I doubt very much that it's due to any fungus, etc in my case as I've previously used medicated shampoos for various issues and the itching/sensitivity has stayed with me my whole life.

ElfridaEtAl · 10/12/2018 22:42

I get this too, it's there all the time but it's not too bad, then sometimes it's incredibly painful, almost feels as if my scalp is sunburnt, right on the very top of my head. I wash my hair almost daily, the most I can go is every other day as my skin and hair have been ++greasy since puberty.
At the moment using Alberto Balsam Tea tree which is working a treat at stopping my scalp itching and it only costs £1, whereas pricier brands were making it worse. Might give t-gel a go though and see if that helps.

allthechipsticks · 10/12/2018 23:33

Not just you op if I tie my hair up after missing a few washes my scalp really hurts. My DM otoh has very coarse hair and rarely washes her hair more than once a week... it makes me cringe!

bridgetreilly · 10/12/2018 23:57

I use TGel. But I have to say, the best thing I've done is forced myself to leave my hair longer between washing. I used to wash it every other day and ended up with a very sore scalp. The problem isn't the grease, it's the over-washing. Now I wash it every 4-5 days and my scalp is fine and my hair is much less greasy. Even if I don't use TGel, it's basically fine, though I still do, just to be sure. It's really horrid at the start, but so worth it if you can bear to persevere with it.

Mari50 · 10/12/2018 23:58

I used to get a very sore scalp when I was suffering from TE (hairloss), scalp would ache or burn and the only relief was massage, although this could sometimes feel almost as painful. I have greasy hair but it wasn’t anything to do with hairwashing. Scalp feels rank if I don’t wash but not sore.
