Just found out they have an expiry date and need to be replaced every 10 years! I had no idea.

I didn't know that either.

Checking smoke alarms is one of those things you are supposed to do regularly anyway, and I somehow rarely get round to except when I burn something under the grill.

thank you for the reminder.

I checked mine when my friend's house burned down 😬. Any reminder is a good reminder, thanks. PS they all survived, only 1 injury, some heroics, many lost sentimental possessions and children needing counselling.
Check your smoke alarms!!

Check smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms regularly. It could save lives.

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 08/12/2018 19:16

I check mine once a month.

Yes; and when the alarms decide the batteries have had enough (even when power supplied) they give a loud alarm which is constant, with no breaks. We discovered this a year or so back. Ours went off whilst we were away for a weekend a long distance from home, and with no spare key left with anyone near home. Our neighbours were not too happy!
It cost us around £200 to have a locksmith come over (met my FIL who drive 40 miles or so over) to break in - took him almost an hour due to having good quality anti snap locks - and help disable the alarms, and then to fit a new door lock. We then needed to purchase three new alarms to replace the old ones.

It was an expensive weekend.

I know have the date written inside a cupboard in the kitchen and on my phone (!!) to change them before the expiry date next time!

Carbon monoxide alarms also have expiry dates

We do check them for whether working regularly too; just didn't realise about the expiry date esp as they are on the main power supply.
