Any cake decorators here? AIBU

Dont know if this is the right place to post. But AIBU had a cake made for my Daughter. A model of my daughter on top - looks nothing like her. I sent the cake decorator 5 photos and told her my daughter has blonde hair. The model is not right and her hair dark brown. Just disapointed spending £60 on a cake. It was my mum who went to pick the cake up and mum thanked the cake decorator whilst quietly thinking to herself that looks nothing like C. and the hair is far too dark. I'm disapointed mum says we should get some icing and make the hair lighter ourself but that could make it worse. AIBU to think the cake decorator should change this or not now mum thanked her and took cake away? Would a cake decorator do anything about this or definitely not? is it right to of just smiled and thanked her and just quietly not be impressed? Thanks

Your mum should have challenged her. It’s hard to make an icing figure really look like a person, but the hair should at least have been the right colour! It might still be worth asking if she can fix it, or knock something off the price.

Your mum should've dealt with it on collection. You could call the lady and ask her if there is anything that can be done, she might be able to change the hair at least.

Thankyou for your replies. Mum said she was lovely and didn't feel able to say anything and I would of probably been exactly the same. Smiled and said thankyou but quietly not been impressed. My mum thinks because she thanked her and took the cake away and didn't say anything it's too late now? This lady makes some truly amazing cakes and mum said she was lovely and chatting away about all her cakes. I will contact her thankyou

I’m a professional cake decorator. I would have expected your mum to say something on collection if the cake wasn’t right. However, if you called and said the hair wasn’t right, I’d do my best to fix it.

That said, I’m not sure what you mean by A model of my daughter on top - looks nothing like her. I’d expect the hair style/colour to be correct, and the model to show the approximate age of your daughter (ie small child/teenager/adult etc) but other than that, on a £60 cake, the model is not going to be anything other than fairly generic cartoon style model.

You can get quite detailed cake models, based on photos, but they are likely to be much more expensive.

The model is very good just doesnt look like C. I'd love to have the talent and skill to do cake decorating. We thought that doesn't look like C. The hair is just too dark. Maybe if the hair can be changed it would be better. I didn't know if I was being unreasonable to contact the cake decorator to ask if she can change it? Thankyou

The hair would be quick to change. The decorator that did DD's cake put on the wrong cartoon character, but we went back 45 mins later and she'd done the right one.
