To wonder about aliens

A friend of mine is completely obsessed with ufos.
It's been a bit of a standard joke and over the years I've listened but not taken much notice.
Last night we had a good discussion and he lent me a book by a respected ufologist called above top secret.

Apparently Ronald Regan had heavy involvement of top secret knowledge of their existence. And also high level military chiefs.

Now I'm becoming a bit fascinated. Could there really be a top level worldwide cover up?

I love aliens

Took a trip to Area 51 a few years back and it was a fascinating experience

incallthebloodytime · 08/12/2018 09:03

I think there's aliens for sure

But the reason that Trump hasn't tweeted about it is that he is a lizard person himself

Being serious though: aliens must exist but they might not be arsed with us

Russiawithlove · 08/12/2018 09:04

From what I can make out there is something in the USA called the disclosure project. Top military chiefs have given testimonies since
The 1940s. It has all been locked away but now there are appeals for the info to be disclosed to the public.
I'm not a conspiracy theorist but the author states that powers are wanting to stop it due to de stabilisation of the status quo.
Not sure I'd want to know really...if we cent deal with snow in this country how would we cope with that info lol

This

US jets try to intercept UFO but ultimately fail to keep up.

SpaceDinosaur · 08/12/2018 09:26

Trump would've tweeted about it if it had happened

This has made me both sad because I totally agree
And laugh out loud because of course he would!!!
The only secret that man can keep is his tax returns.

Pachyderm1 · 08/12/2018 09:27

don't know why anyone would care if there was a coverup. I honestly can think of few things less exciting than whether aliens have visited.

Whaaaaaat? Are you serious? You would be completely disinterested in finding out that life on other planets exists and is technologically advanced enough to have travelled to Earth? How is it possible that that would be of no interest to you?!

OP - on the basis of pure mathematical probability we know there must be life elsewhere in the universe. It is so impossibly vast that it doesn’t make sense to believe we are the only planet supporting life. But I don’t believe in a conspiracy about covering them up. It wouldn’t be possible to keep it a secret for so long. And there is no real evidence of any kind that such a visitation has occurred.

Craft1905 · 08/12/2018 09:28

If you think about the timescales, it's nonsense. The universe is 14b years old. That's 14 thousand million! Our planet is only 4.7b years old. So it's only been here for about a third of the time. And we have only been in a position to accurately record and film/photograph any alien encounters for about 150 years.

The chances that aliens just happen to pass this way in the last 150 years, when they could have done so at any other point in the last 14b years, is too remote to contemplate. They might have passed this way 8b years ago, before the Earth was even formed. Or in 2b years time, when humans will be long extinct.

But no, apparently their visit just happened to coincide with our current lifetimes.

It's like dropping a coloured grain of sand somewhere in the Sahara and then someone else hoping to find it in the first place you look!

Pachyderm1 · 08/12/2018 09:30

All I can say is I have seen UFOs

Anything can be a UFO if you’re bad enough at identifying things.

user1497863568 · 08/12/2018 09:36

I think there definitely are. Over 20 years ago my husband and I were sitting on a hill gazing at the stars. We saw what we initially thought was a satellite moving from north to south like a star. Then it stopped almost directly in line with us (but a bit more toward the horizon). We were a bit puzzled about this and debated whether satellites stopped. Then suddenly it just shot off across the sky in the direction it had come from with amazing speed (no accelaration!) and without fizzling out. Since then we've only had one other exciting incident which turned out to be NOSS satellites.

Lucylugs · 08/12/2018 09:39

Have watched Unacknowledged on Netflix?
Sounds similar to your book. It's interesting.

citiesofbismuth · 08/12/2018 09:41

Why do the UFOs only seem to visit north america though? That's a bit suspicious isn't it? I wonder if they landed and asked to speak to Bruce Willis.

I think the most likely explanation is experimental military craft being sent on test flights. The Russians probably test similar inventions.

SerenDippitty · 08/12/2018 09:44

I agree with some pps that there is very likely life out there but it has never been here. As for accounts from “credible sources”, military or commercial pilots etc I think they are just as capable of being mistaken/mentally unstable as anyone else.

Russiawithlove · 08/12/2018 09:48

They are definitely not just in North US. Now I'm reading about the Berwyn mountains in N Wales Shock

Not sure what I've started with myself now...

OP posts:
RangeRider · 08/12/2018 09:56

If there is intelligent life out there then they won't bother with us because we're too busy destroying the planet and each other. They'd take one look, shake their heads and go 'We can do so much better'
Maybe God created aliens when he realised that humans weren't as good as he'd imagined? Maybe there's a Human Mk 2 somewhere out there?

RangeRider · 08/12/2018 09:56

Maybe Trump is an alien? It would explain his orange skin and weird hair, and how he behaves so oddly....

thelaststraw123 · 08/12/2018 09:58

Alien sightings went up massively after Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear disasters. Almost like they were protecting us.

OP watch ancient aliens!! You'll be hooked!

incallthebloodytime · 08/12/2018 10:11

Lizard people amongst us

Sausagefingers9 · 08/12/2018 10:13

I genuinely believe octopuses are aliens.

FestiveNut · 08/12/2018 10:17

Nah, to be honest OP, I find it fairly unlikely that a species capable of either long term space flight or faster-than-light travel haven't cracked nuclear reactors. They're not even that good, produce lots of hazardous waste.

Also, you're buying the idea that every nation's military and government have managed to agree for over 50 years on this one issue AND keep it all under wraps? Since when have they all agreed on anything?

Hmm
RayRayBidet · 08/12/2018 10:19

I believe other life exists in the universe. Given the vast distances between us and other stars and that travelling faster than the speed of light is impossible I think it's unlikely they have visited.

GladAllOver · 08/12/2018 10:24

I never believed in aliens. But after seeing Jacob Rees-Mogg I'm not so sure.

Russiawithlove · 08/12/2018 10:27

I think the point is they know nuclear power is going to be our destruction. So they are preventing us from nuclear war.

I doubt they actually care about the human race but maybe something nuclear could affect them. So they will leave us be until we start
ruining other planets etc
Also fascinated how and why the Egyptian pyramids have clear pics of flying saucers inside.

OP posts:
FestiveNut · 08/12/2018 10:37

I don't see how they know nuclear power will destroy us. I don't think it will to be honest, far more likely to be a genetically altered superbug or mass famine due to overpopulation. But even then, some would survive. For planet-wide extinction you're looking for eruption of a supervolcano, the sun going supernova or the weather getting hot enough that nothing can live outside.

FestiveNut · 08/12/2018 10:37

Or a giant asteroid. Something like that.

FestiveNut · 08/12/2018 10:42

I'll be honest, I've not researched the ufo claims in your book, so can't adequately refute them. But is it possible that the ancient Egyptians were drawing a cloud formation like this one?
