Showering

I’m a single retired mother. My 23 year old daughter and her boyfriend live with me. I like having them around but I’ve had to lay down some ground rules to keep the house ticking over nicely. My biggest gripe is shower time. They both like long leisurely showers. Initially it was 30 mins plus but I put my foot down and restricted them to 20 mins each. My shower lasts 10 mins at most. They’re both unemployed but I take a small amount from them each month to help with bills and food etc. AIBU about shower time ?

YANBU 10 to 15 minutes is plenty.

They can enjoy all the long leisurely showers they want when they are paying for them.

YANBU

YANBU re limiting showering time...but why are you supporting 2 unemployed adults?

GunpowderGelatine · 07/12/2018 19:22

YADNBU when they pay for bills in their own house they can shower as long as they want

Depends what I’m doing in the shower.... A ‘functional’ shower to get clean... 2-3 mins. A ‘fun’ shower with a happy (and clean) ending... maybe 10. 20 seems excessive. 30... just boring!

What are they actually doing in the shower for 20minutes!!! We have a quick turnaround in the morning and I have a 5 minutes shower that includes brushing my teeth and washing hair! It lasts an extra minute if I shave armpits! Sometimes I have a 10min shower if cold at the weekend...really that is quite long enough...Tell then it’s 10min and a timer from now on! YANBU!!

You’ll actually be doing them a favour in readiness for when they have their own place and have to pay for themselves!

They’re both unemployed but I take a small amount from them

Why small?

They only get unemployment benefit which is £60 per week each. My daughter has Apergers and is finding it difficult to get a job. Her boyfriend is trying hard but there's nothing but seasonal work and he didn't get any of those. I have no other issues with them The showering just does my head in !! Thanks for the advice

Threaten or actually place an alarm clock/timer outside the door, when they are showering. Set it for 10 minutes.

Thump on the door loudly and tell daughter/boyfriend that time's up when the alarm goes off.

I don't know if you have a water meter but a 2 x 30 minute showers is a ridiculous waste of water and fuel. It is an indulgence that falls on the bill-payer and the CFs needs to stop it now.
