to return / get a refund on my christmas tree from asda?

DH always insists on a real tree every year. We're pretty hard up so budget could only allow a max spend of £30, so we got our tree from asda. Took ages to pick one.. happy with decision.

Its been up 5 days and its droopy as hell, losing needles, looks a bit sad. We've kept it topped up with water constantly so not sure why.

Its really bugging me. I want to get another one as I think it'll be dead by christmas day. Would it be unreasonable to try to get a refund from asda?

I'm not sure, I do think it's worth a try after only 5 days though - that is really poor.
You haven't got it near a radiator have you? I forgot to turn ours down a bit last year and the tree wilted much more quickly than the previous year.

stiltonontoast · 07/12/2018 09:50

@BettyOBarley nope! we deliberately kept it away from any heat sources.

How much did you saw off the trunk first?

How much water have you given it?

stiltonontoast · 07/12/2018 09:58

@TheLittlestLightOnTheTree

Made a grave error and forgot to saw any off.

Tons of water, we've kept the pot topped up at all times, checking twice a day.

Well it won't be taking the water if you've not sawn the bottom! No wonder it's drooping

When it's cut down in the forest the sap released seals over the cut.... that's why you need to re-cut it

TheLittlestLightOnTheTree · 07/12/2018 10:03

They can then drink up to 2 litres of water a day

cloudtree · 07/12/2018 10:04

Agreed, if you haven't taken any off the end then the shop is likely to say its your fault. Take it down, chop some off and give it a drink. Otherwise it will be dead by the end of next week.

SpannerH · 07/12/2018 10:10

get it back out of the pot and saw some off, it shouldn't get any worse that way. I doubt they'll take it back but you could try.

TheLittlestLightOnTheTree · 07/12/2018 10:22

How would you re-net it to return it?

sonandhelpneeded · 07/12/2018 11:04

I reckon they will refund you! ASDA aren't going to argue I'm sure!

Avrannakern · 07/12/2018 11:08

Isn't it a bit early to be putting real trees up? It's too early for any tree IMO, but a real trees won't make it to New Year.

cancla · 07/12/2018 11:09

I wouldn't take it back. You didn't cut it

AgentProvocateur · 07/12/2018 11:12

It's far too early for a real tree. They're only at their best for 10 days or so.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 07/12/2018 11:14

If you put a real tree up in the first week of December, it's bound to be a twig by the 25th!

beenandgoneandbackagain · 07/12/2018 11:16

I would take it back.

And for those saying it's too early for a real tree - places which sell large numbers of trees, import / buy in trees that are all cut at roughly the same time and kept outdoors, which is why they stay fresh looking. Buying from one of these places the day before Christmas (if there were any left) would get you a tree chopped down roughly the same time as one bought at the beginning of December. (I used to work in the trade)

The only way to guarantee a really fresh tree is to go to one of those places that let you chop it down or dig it up yourself.

And when you get your replacement, remember to cut as many inches as possible from the bottom.

Boatsnack3 · 07/12/2018 11:16

Asda will replace the tree, they might ask more questions about how you cared for the tree if you demand a refund. If you go to the shop with the receipt and explain you're not happy, they'll give you another tree.

SpannerH · 07/12/2018 11:22

We've had a real tree every year from the 1st week of December and never had an issue with it not lasting well into the new year.

Branleuse · 07/12/2018 11:28

yeah I would after 5 days
