Over the counter cocodemol 8/500 for a burst eardrum and severe ear infection. AIBU to think that’s not enough?

Dh has had to leave work in agony and got a appointment to be told he had this but all they could give him was that. He can’t take ibuprofen type drugs so this is it.

That sounds perfectly adequate to me (although pain is individual) but to be honest 1g of paracetamol and 16mg of codeine should be more than enough for an ear infection imo.

SnowdropFox · 06/12/2018 17:20

It's a normal starting point. If the combination of that and ibuprofen doesn't work then he should ask for something stronger.

Oldraver · 06/12/2018 17:21

I would agree. OH had a burst ear drum last year and he alternated co-codomol and ibuprofen/codomol. He was still in agony

SnowdropFox · 06/12/2018 17:21

Sorry missed the ibuprofen bit. Give the painkillers a chance, they might be completely adequate for his pain.

agedknees · 06/12/2018 17:24

Ear pain is horrific. Has Solpadeine got more codeine in it? They should have given him a script for 30mg.

There not going to prescribe morphine for an ear infection so if NSAIDS are not appropriate there isn't really anything else to give.

fluffyblanket17 · 06/12/2018 17:27

I've recently had this and doc gave me 30/500 co codamol. Maybe he was given 8/500 because most of the pain usually stops once the ear drum has burst

ThatOneHurt · 06/12/2018 17:29

Earache is horrendous.

I've been a grown adult and cried with earache (then stopped when I realised it actually made the pain worse).

Has he got antibiotics?

He’s got amoxicillin.
Still in lots of pain since the eardrum burst.

I reported the spam

redsummershoes · 06/12/2018 17:40

he can take a decongestant nose spray (in the nose!) which helps with the pain as well as it relieves pressure.

CocoDeMoll · 06/12/2018 17:42

Amazing redsummer I’ll get some tomorrow

Try drinking (once it's cool) tablespoon honey, tablespoon cider vinegar in hot water. Tastes absolutely foul, but will release the congestion and pressure in the sinuses.

Earache and toothache are the pits.

Solpadeine Max is 12.5/500, that's available otc.
