to quit my job tomorrow?

helpihatemyjob · 05/12/2018 20:29

I began a new job mid September, different career path for me in a sector I was really interested in (HR). I was surprised I got the job as no previous experience and it's within a really big company. The job I applied for was an administrative role and what I am really doing is working in a call centre, receiving a ton of abuse daily on the phones from employees and managers who shout and swear and are very rarely pleasant.

I've already discussed with my manager how unhappy I am and that the job I am doing is not the job that was offered to me. 4 other members of staff who started with me have since quit due the job not being what expected. We are shouted and sworn at down the phones, all our calls monitored and we are constantly pulled up on small details such as saying " no problem " when someone says thank you.

It's extremely stressful, I'm sat at a desk answering calls non-stop for 8 hours a day. I suffer with anxiety and I've been getting extremely stressed and I'm so miserable.

I've got 3 job interviews lined up next week which I've been denied time off for ( said they were appointments for DC but still denied ). AIBU to just quit and hope I get one of the jobs next week? I really don't want to go back tomorrow and financially we'd be okay but I'm at my breaking point, I'm so unhappy and am dreading having to go in tomorrow.

What do I do? Sorry for such a long rambling post, I just don't know wether I'm being a bit of a wet wipe or not.

I am horrified that a company tolerates staff swearing at and abusing their colleagues, surely if the calls are recorded the abusive people should be disciplined.
Good luck with your decision to quit - I hope next week's interviews are successful.

indieshuffle · 05/12/2018 22:30

Sounds awful, but if you will need the reference then don't do anything hasty tomorrow. I'm not saying don't quit as I agree life is too short, but think about how to do it and the repercussions for a day or so.

You could call in sick tomorrow and go to see your GP then if there is any issue they will be able to confirm that you were seen by a doctor. But completely disappearing is likely to affect a reference. It sucks to have a situation like this.

helpihatemyjob · 05/12/2018 22:34

@PerspicaciaTick a lot of the rude calls are actually managers within the company too!

About 95% are extremely arsey, snappy and short with me and 75% swear at me and accuse me of doing something wrong that's actually their error and when they call me " fucking useless " I'm not allowed to hang up, ask them to stop or say anything back, you're expected to remain calm and just take it

@indieshuffle completely agree, going to call in sick tomorrow and Friday ( I have one interview on Friday ) then have a proper think over the weekend

Shock In which case, the company is a lawsuit waiting to happen...because someone is going to document the bullying and the consequences to their mental health.
A company which is large enough to run an in-house call centre for HR calls is unlikely to write a reference that says anything more than "we confirm helpihatemyjob was employed by us between xx and yy dates".

indieshuffle · 05/12/2018 22:40

Hope you get some respite OP. Incidentally it would be interesting to see what your HR policies say about staff being abused?! I'd nick a recording if I could get my hands on one and maybe whistleblow.

But argh!! Sometimes you just have to get the hell out! Good luck!

katseyes7 · 05/12/2018 22:47

lf it's any help, l've had a virus which came on suddenly overnight. Woke up one morning, sat up in bed, and l was as dizzy as could be. lt comes and goes, accompanied by horrific nausea (you could throw up at any time!). lt's made me scared to go out of the house, not supposed to drive (even the tablets the doctor gave me make me sleepy, which means you can't drive).
l've had it genuinely for two months, and it's no better. lt came out of the blue and shows no sign of going. l'm sure that would be a reasonable excuse for phoning in sick.
Good luck, l hope you find something, life's too short to be that miserable at work. x

Patriciathestripper1 · 05/12/2018 23:15

Life’s too short !! Quit now. Even cleaning toilets would be better than that hell hole.

badlydrawnperson · 05/12/2018 23:30

They will almost certainly give you a bad reference.

They almost certainly won't - 99% of references are just "yes they worked here" now.

BatF1nk · 05/12/2018 23:42

@katseyes7 sounds like you have Ménière's disease

6triesbuttingout · 06/12/2018 00:22

Get signed off with work related stress or depression. Don’t quit immediately. Take your sick pay and some time to get yourself together. Also if you don’t belong to a union ACUS can help. See your doctor ASAP. Good luck 💐

daisychain01 · 06/12/2018 05:34

Look at your contract of employment OP, if you are still on probation you may be on a shortened notice period eg 1 week until completion of probation which elevated to 1 month.

Be aware a company like that is highly likely to dock your wages if you go sick during your notice period or don't cover sick pay at all. Again, double check your contract Ts and Cs

alreadyinchristmasmood · 06/12/2018 05:42

Do it. I did it myself this February and I felt a huge feeling of relief, like someone lifted a big weight off my shoulders!!! It's so worth it!

CarolsSecretCookieRecipe · 06/12/2018 05:42

I quit my new job recently OP, due to overwhelming anxiety. I was on the phones a lot too, being verbally abused (not an HR role tho). I felt I would have a complete breakdown if I didn't leave. Made things tough financially. I've found a position commencing next year - less money but no phones! Life is too short.

neveradullmoment99 · 06/12/2018 06:13

Don’t quit, go off sick and eke out as much pay as you can from them...
This^^^

Yidette86 · 06/12/2018 06:26

There's some terrible advice here, please do consider your options and the possible consequences.

BadMoodBoard · 06/12/2018 06:46

YWBU not to quit

iseecabbages · 06/12/2018 07:05

Hand your notice in and phone in sick for notice period, they can’t prove you’re not sick and if you are set in not returning anyway what’s to lose. I can’t see the huge value in a reference from a job that you’ve only worked in a few months.
Also, document in your resignation the abuse you have endured during your short tenure and the expectation/ lack of support in dealing with it or raise a separate greivance using their procedures.

ForalltheSaints · 06/12/2018 07:05

Unless you would be broke not doing the job, leave. Depending on how the job was advertised, consider making the agency or whomever it was advertised with aware that the description etc was misleading.

Once you have left, perhaps tell us whom the company is, so we can avoid working for them, or perhaps doing business with them.

BlimeyCalmDown · 06/12/2018 07:11

Call in sick, then if you get one of the jobs you can get GP to sign you off sick with stress for the 4wk notice period. Although personally if you can financially manage I would even just pack up now. Life is too short... xx

JustanotherCHRISTMASuser01 · 06/12/2018 07:11

May i ask if its a company beginning with a P?

CleanBee · 06/12/2018 07:17

Don’t give too much information here OP, someone from your company might be able to identify you if you do and it could lead to further problems.

MsHopey · 06/12/2018 07:30

I had a job for a little while that created the worst time in my life.
The staff and managers were bullies, the job itself wasn't actually bad but I was called into the office daily for things they deemed I needed a "talking to" about.
To note, my role was in a call centre with absolutely no customer facing times at all.
I had meetings regarding, not wearing enough make up, what I ate for dinner, personal phone calls I made on my lunch break that someone said they over head (I ate dinner in my fucking car so that's bullshit), my weight, my car being dirty. In all my meetings my actual work was never questioned as not being good enough, it was all very personal and probably illegal to be honest. I have high anxiety linked to low self esteem and I would literally cry all the way go work, all through the meetings, and all the way home.
And next day it would start all over again. It got so bad the doctor signed me off work for a week, I was on probation and when I told them I wasn't going to be returning for a few days they were horrendous on the phone and shouting at me.
I had already had 2 interviews at a difference place if employment and was waiting to hear from them.
We were not well off and would have really struggled if I didn't have a job, but DH told me to quit every single day, he couldn't keep seeing me fall apart.
When I went back after my week off they called ALL the managers and me into the office, I asked for a couple minutes and literally scribbled my resignation letter out right there and then. Saved everyone time because I was pretty sure I was getting sacked anyways and this at least saved my CV.
They didn't ask me to work my notice, they told me to quickly and quietly collect my personal belongings, don't look at anyone, don't talk to anyone, and if they see me behaving inappropriately they will call security to escort me out. I'm still not sure what they thought I was going to do.
I finally felt free and drove home with the biggest smile on my face!
I got a call a week later saying I'd gotten the other job!
Life's to short to be completely miserable.

AuntMarch · 06/12/2018 07:32

Don't wait 2 weeks for an appointment, request a phone consultation with the GP. Usually much quicker.

I agree, get signed of with work related stress, and in your resignation you can detail the job not being as described and toll that the abuse on the phone has taken on your mental health and general well being. Keep a copy for yourself. If they were to refuse a reference I'm sure you could become a massive pain in their backside with it!

helpihatemyjob · 06/12/2018 07:50

@AuntMarch it's a massive company so they send out hundreds of references a week, I don't think they'd refuse one but they do sometimes make them sound negative

Feeling even more anxious and worried this morning about calling in sick. How do I approach the GP? Do I specifically ask to be signed off?
