to quit my job tomorrow?

helpihatemyjob · 05/12/2018 20:29

I began a new job mid September, different career path for me in a sector I was really interested in (HR). I was surprised I got the job as no previous experience and it's within a really big company. The job I applied for was an administrative role and what I am really doing is working in a call centre, receiving a ton of abuse daily on the phones from employees and managers who shout and swear and are very rarely pleasant.

I've already discussed with my manager how unhappy I am and that the job I am doing is not the job that was offered to me. 4 other members of staff who started with me have since quit due the job not being what expected. We are shouted and sworn at down the phones, all our calls monitored and we are constantly pulled up on small details such as saying " no problem " when someone says thank you.

It's extremely stressful, I'm sat at a desk answering calls non-stop for 8 hours a day. I suffer with anxiety and I've been getting extremely stressed and I'm so miserable.

I've got 3 job interviews lined up next week which I've been denied time off for ( said they were appointments for DC but still denied ). AIBU to just quit and hope I get one of the jobs next week? I really don't want to go back tomorrow and financially we'd be okay but I'm at my breaking point, I'm so unhappy and am dreading having to go in tomorrow.

What do I do? Sorry for such a long rambling post, I just don't know wether I'm being a bit of a wet wipe or not.

How do I go about quitting? Call in sick for a week then hand in notice? I really don't want to work my 4 weeks notice :(

melissasummerfield · 05/12/2018 21:36

Are you in the midlands op ?!

Junkmail · 05/12/2018 21:37

My sister did a job like this. She stuck it out for two years because the money was decent but she’s now in a position where she’s had to take sisx months off from working becasue of stress and anxiety. Don’t make that mistake. It’s really badly affected her. Quit tomorrow.

bourbonbiccy · 05/12/2018 21:39

Life is far too short. I would just do as others have said and ring in sick with stomach bug and flu symptoms. Don't stay in a job that you don't like, it's just sole destroying and will drag you down.

mathsquestions · 05/12/2018 21:39

Just walk. What can they do to you?

helpihatemyjob · 05/12/2018 21:39

I really appreciate everyone replying thank you, I feel a huge sense of relief knowing I'm not just being silly

I’ve sent you a Pm OP.

Foodylicious · 05/12/2018 21:41

Tonsillitis should cover you for a week or so

OrigamiZoo · 05/12/2018 21:41

Is it Crapita? I'd quit, and nail those interviews.

Miggeldy · 05/12/2018 21:42

I would just not show up.
Block all contact from them.
Fuck them - sounds appalling.
You're not the first to do this and you won't be the last.
you get no thanks for staying and suffering.

helpihatemyjob · 05/12/2018 21:44

@melissasummerfield sort of, why?

OP posts:
Ethel80 · 05/12/2018 21:45

A couple of things to consider before deciding whether to call in sick or resign tomorrow.

Will you need a reference from this company? If so then calling in sick might not be the best plan if you can afford to leave without another job to go to.

Explaining that you resigned because the job wasn't as advertised might be easier than having to declare a month off sick with stress. Employers shouldn't discriminate but they still do.

It might be that you won't be asked to work your notice period anyway. What happened when the others left? Quite often employers won't want people working their notice if they're unhappy.

melissasummerfield · 05/12/2018 21:46

@helpihatemyjob begins with an i ?!

Sounds very familiar Grin

Ethel80 · 05/12/2018 21:47

Shit, just remembered you need time off for the interviews. D&V is a good one, can't prove you haven't had it and you can't go near the place for 48 hours.

helpihatemyjob · 05/12/2018 21:49

@Ethel80 I assume I would need a reference because this is my first "admin" call centre job and my interviews are for office/admin roles.

The standard references we send out are dates the employee worked for the company and if they a suitable to employee or not

Stepmum3 · 05/12/2018 21:49

Just quit! If you will be ok. Your well-being is paramount. Let them know you were misled in the interview you have nothing to lose.

There is nothing worse for the other colleagues when someone goes off sick and job blocks knowing they are leaving that is. I worked with a lady who did this and left the rest of the dept running around like headless chickens and achieving nothing. She quit with immediate effect about 6 weeks later. Also, her comments were taken onboard.

helpihatemyjob · 05/12/2018 21:50

@Ethel80 I think the others quit by sending an email saying they wouldn't be staying as the job wasn't as described and then just didn't turn up

OP posts:
helpmum2003 · 05/12/2018 21:51

Quit. You'll be able to discuss your reasons for quitting and get reference from previous employer?

Joanne721 · 05/12/2018 21:55

I would quit,it sounds beyond horrible xFlowers

Ethel80 · 05/12/2018 21:57

@helpihatemyjob Ah ok, I thought references asked about days off sick but if they don't, fuck it!

Good luck with the interviews.

cricketmum84 · 05/12/2018 21:57

Quit, get signed off for your notice period.

I have been in the exact same position and it is not worth the damage you are doing to your mental health by staying.

Good luck!!!

Yidette86 · 05/12/2018 22:07

The problem with ringing in sick like some are advising is that it looks rather suspect as you've already requested the time off, this could lead to formal procedures depending on company policy... I'm assuming you're still on probation as well

I'd honestly just quit if you can, don't worry about the reference, it would look worse if you went off sick at a place you haven't been working long at as some companies do request the amount of sick days whilst employed.

HappilyHarridan · 05/12/2018 22:10

They can sue you for breach of contract if you don’t give the correct notice, they probably won’t but they could. They will almost certainly give you a bad reference.

Yidette86 · 05/12/2018 22:22

I doubt they would sue (most employers have bigger things to deal with than taking a staff member to court for leaving without notice) they would have to sue quite a few by the sounds of it, plus they have been misleading employees upon recruitment so it would be rather silly for them to as it could land them in the shit.. Court isn't cheap for companies and what exactly will they put in the reference? Left without notice? Even if they were so ballsy to put that the op can explain why, they can't actually give a bad reference if it's not factually true, leaving without notice happens all the time.
