Other than for children. I love buying stuff for kids.

Adult presents, however are a pain. We attempted to institute a present amnesty in our family but certain people have decided to ignore it. Now we're obligated.... CBA.

Anybody else?

You aren't obligated - if other people ignore it that's up to them. You have already told them you won't be buying presents....so don't.

EssentialHummus · 05/12/2018 15:44

Just don’t buy. You’ve told them. If they can’t help themselves and get sucked in, it’s no reflection on you.

I thought I was the only one who hates buying presents. I'm not stingy, I just hate shopping. I hate shopping centres and online shopping, I find it an absolute chore. I'd much rather give the gift of my time (e.g. I'll do a full clean of your house, take care of your pet while you go away, do your food shopping, etc) but apparently Christmas is about presents Hmm

Just don’t buy for them.

don't buy anything, or get a token item online and get it delivered. It's not hard.

DH and I don't buy each other gifts, we prefer splashing on holidays apart from anything else, but I still buy bits for my parents and grand-mother, because it's a nice thing to do and will make them happy. Otherwise I would just get some chocolate or something.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 05/12/2018 16:06

you're not obligated to buy someone a gift just because they've brought one for you. Who told you you had to do that?

SilkenTofu · 05/12/2018 16:19

If they won't listen then just send the message some other way. Buy them token presents that take little thought e.g. bottle of wine, box of Milk Tray etc. They will soon gone it down if they see you are no longer participating.

The amount of shit adult present this year is awful. Bloody mini desk top snooker, crap gift sets that gets gifted to charity shops. It’s so pointless! I don’t have a big family so I’m not obligated to buy for anyone but my nearest and dearest xx
