I have just read forty pages of thread and it’s almost full! Let us congregate here for answers!

By the way, I know it's been asked many, many times before, but why do so many people fill up the thread unnecessarily and slightly indulgently by writing 'Placemarking'? If only there were a function on MN to 'Watch this thread'

Why don't they bookmark it?!

TheLittleDogLaughed · 05/12/2018 03:09

Why is there likely to be an update / solution on Thursday? I didn’t get through all of the previous thread. I’m going to ask a friend of mine today who is a riddle expert.

The little dog- because the OP is meeting up with her friend that day. OP has said that she thinks by asking her friend face to face, she'll get a better understanding of whether she's near, or well off the mark by her friend's reaction

TheClaws · 05/12/2018 05:13

There once was a man called Boswell. For short they called him Bos, and he walked up the post office steps

I’m thinking it’s just a cryptic clue. The answer being death. ‘BOS’ is ‘SOB’ backwards. Then walked up the Post Office steps - leading to OP (the trigger for this is ‘up’ - leading to the Pearly Gates.

Just a thought!

CarolsSecretCookieRecipe · 05/12/2018 05:31

Hells Bells. A second thread!

I asked Aussie DH, he has no idea and rolled his eyes.

I asked gifted and talented DS. He said it makes no sense and someone's taking the piss.

I went to the post office and asked in there and was reminded of this thread whilst posting my cards.

bananananananana · 05/12/2018 05:48

So tired but still reading this thread... why... answer please Grin

fringegrin45 · 05/12/2018 06:04

This reminds me of watching Lost

Twists and turns but is there an answer?

Omgineedanamechange · 05/12/2018 06:32

If we’re going to assume that Derek does know the answer, and isn’t being an irritating twat by refusing to tell us, but they are telling the truth when they say they can’t tell us. Then we can assume that OPs friend can’t tell her on thursdat, and even if OP worked it out with clues from their friend, the they won’t be able to tell us either. Hence we’re all wasting pur time here.

Boswell · 05/12/2018 07:00

Just dropping in on the thread because someone @-ed me and reminded me that I had this name Grin

dogzdinner · 05/12/2018 07:00

The friends mum was going to tell OP at her wedding so the idea that Derek can't tell us would imply that Derek doesn't know.

BertieBotts · 05/12/2018 07:03

You know what, I think I've figured something out.

You would never usually say "For short they called him bos", it would be "They called him bos for short".

That leads us to think that it's two separate sentences: they called him bos for short AND ALSO he walked up the steps. Totally unconnected.

However the wording being off means that the second half could be included in the "for short" meaning. They called him bos and he walked up the steps - for short.

It's hard to explain in text but it feels different when you say or read it with this in mind.

ScreamingValenta · 05/12/2018 07:11

Settling into the new thread. I have no more theories since my tentative and obscure 'Crambo' and 'Golf' solutions posted on the old thread. Sad

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 05/12/2018 07:13

"There was a man whose name was Boswell, for short they called him Bosandhewalkedupthepostofficesteps..."

And quick as a flash someone wittily intercepted with "that's not short for Boswell!!"

I think this too ^"

And me!*

Omgineedanamechange · 05/12/2018 07:14

Excellent point dogzdinner.

Dairyqueen2 · 05/12/2018 07:16

Not a cryptic clues, I'm pretty sure. Cryptic clues are neat and beautiful ....

MaisyPops · 05/12/2018 07:23

I'm starting to err towards the idea that it's not a joke at all, well it is but the joke is pretending that it's funny

Drogosnextwife · 05/12/2018 07:24

*This reminds me of watching Lost

Twists and turns but is there an answer?*

Yeah Lost got crap and pointless too.

Anyone catch the riddlers address? I would like to post them some dog shit for ruining my life!

BertieBotts · 05/12/2018 07:26

Aha see, someone made the same realisation as me on this new thread. Sorry I posted before catching up. But I think this is quite important. However I don't know what it means yet.

BertieBotts · 05/12/2018 07:27

OP Post highlights are clearly unimportant as we are all refreshing and reading live Wink

BertieBotts · 05/12/2018 07:28

We'll have to get MNHQ to do one of their special blue highlighted posts when OP comes back with the answer.

NewPapaGuinea · 05/12/2018 07:36

*"There was a man whose name was Boswell, for short they called him Bosandhewalkedupthepostofficesteps..."

And quick as a flash someone wittily intercepted with "that's not short for Boswell!!"*

By Jove, I think you have it!

LiquoricePickle · 05/12/2018 07:39

There was a man whose name was Boswell, for short they called him Bosandhewalkedupthepostofficesteps..."

And quick as a flash someone wittily intercepted with "that's not short for Boswell!!"*

I definitely think this is the answer!

Bringbackbertha · 05/12/2018 07:44

Can we get confirmation of the actual riddle as I believe there were 2 versions posted by the op on the original thread

dogzdinner · 05/12/2018 07:46

Is Derek the OP??
