I have just read forty pages of thread and it’s almost full! Let us congregate here for answers!

@BloodyUseless and I think one other poster said it becomes incorrect if you reveal it.
@BlockRockinBeats that was exactly my train of thought! If you say that the is no answer (or no correct answer) you are giving an answer and thus there is no answer becomes untrue /incorrect.

I don't understand why those who get it can't just explain it, it's a silly riddle not a matter of life and death. Explaining it to everyone will have literally no consequences. Who cares if the answer is no longer strictly true /correct.

BruegelTheEIder · 05/12/2018 20:01

I don't understand why those who get it can't just explain it, it's a silly riddle not a matter of life and death. Explaining it to everyone will have literally no consequences

Because there's nothing to get. OP was trolling and people saying "ooooh I get it" are just going along with it.

BlockRockinBeats · 05/12/2018 20:02

@IamAporcupine Now, I understand what you were getting it. The whole riddle is circular. It is incredibly shit though isn't it? If that really is the 'answer' when what a bloody let down!

We have been going round in circles for 3 days and getting angrier and angrier. Can you imagine our fury after 20 years?! The OP, her mate, the mate's Dh, and the rest of the family need need chucking down the imaginary Post Office steps for that load of old cobblers. My head is literally throbbing with it all. I had better get some jobs done to calm myself down.

MRex · 05/12/2018 20:04

I really can't bear to read through any more. Did anybody do the kids game of tag theory? When you say "I get it", you "get" the person who told you the riddle, who is currently "it". They can't tell you the answer because it isn't a question, it's a game of tag. A bloody stupid one too.

"Bosandhewalkedupthestepstothepostoffice isn't short for Boswell" would have actually been a better riddle answer. I presume that's the one the original OP went with given her runtogethername.

IamAporcupine · 05/12/2018 20:09

MemorialBeach
I spent my whole fucking afternoon saying that the solution to the riddle is that there is no (correct) answer and no one will bloody listen!

IamAporcupine · 05/12/2018 20:10

@BlockRockinBeats - I did say it was circular!

BoswellandAndAndyForshort · 05/12/2018 20:10

People are genuinely annoyed though are they?

It's a nonsense 'riddle were some pretend they know either to annoy or to try to look smart.

It might have been:
"A woman named Celia, thought she liked apples. But she didn't, she like marshmallows."

ScreamingValenta · 05/12/2018 20:12

A woman named Celia, thought she liked apples. But she didn't, she like marshmallows

Would it work with a different fruit? Wink

MRex · 05/12/2018 20:14

The schroedinger version "there is no answer" relies on the riddle containing a question, which it doesn't. So that doesn't work, or it's really badly put together when it could have asked why Bos climbed the stairs.

BeeFarseer · 05/12/2018 20:15

I'm Boswell and so's my wife.

dogzdinner · 05/12/2018 20:18

I think there was a vital piece of information missing from the OP. I imagine that when she asked 'I give up, what's the answer?' she would be told 'I can't tell you'. But she probably didn't realise how important that was.

I think IamAporcupine is the winner - being the first one to come up with what appears to be the solution and to explain it.

PostmanBos · 05/12/2018 20:19

Just doing my rounds.

BoswellandAndAndyForshort · 05/12/2018 20:21

Would it work with a different fruit?

Why yes. Though not bananas.

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 05/12/2018 20:23

You don't need a question - a statement may require explanation, without a question. if 2x = 7, the solution is still x = 3.5 even if you don't ask what x is.

dogzdinner · 05/12/2018 20:27

However I also think -

He was going to collect his 4 letters

and

Did Boscombe down?

Were better answers (to the original wording)

MemorialBeach · 05/12/2018 20:33

@IamAporcupine I know you did and I am very glad you did, or my head would have exploded trying to work it out. You definitely win! Grin
It's the OP and other posters I don't understand being so adamant about not being able to tell anyone. You got it and explained it and the world has carried on turning, why couldn't they do the same.

thethirdbiscuiteer · 05/12/2018 20:33

I want to second @AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen comment earlier and ask @jollyoldsoul to explain it, seeing they also claimed to know the answer earlier.

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 05/12/2018 20:36

I also agree that "Did Boscombe Down" is a more satisfying answer!

BlockRockinBeats · 05/12/2018 20:40

@IamAporcupine is definitely the winner! Her explanation, even though it didn't make sense to me at first, makes complete sense after much pondering. I certainly don't get why others who 'got it' couldn't put it into words.

Now where is is the original OP?

Sunflowersforever · 05/12/2018 20:45

Right, let me get this correct. If the person who tells you the riddle comes back and says "I can't tell you" when you ask if a certain solution is correct, it's not because they are being secretive but because they genuinely can't tell you as they don't know?

That's shit bonkers!

BlueThesaurusRex · 05/12/2018 20:47

I can’t tell if this thread has made me more suicidal or more likely to commit murder 🤷🏻‍♀️

Bamchicabaawaa · 05/12/2018 20:50

I’m so confused

OP posts:
crispysausagerolls · 05/12/2018 20:56

Where did the OP say she has figured it out?

IamAporcupine · 05/12/2018 20:59

Thank you Blush

I did wonder the same re the OP?

IamAporcupine · 05/12/2018 21:02

Sunflowersforever I would say that the are "genuinely" not telling you, not because they don't know, but because there is nothing to tell (or no correct answer to tell)
