Optic nerve abnormality

My 5 year old had an eye exam yesterday at the hospital as the school raised concerns about his eyesight. They have found what they called a ‘deposit’ on the nerve in his eye and he needs a scan. As a huge worrier at the best ofI’m thinking the worst 😞 Has anyone got any experience with this and could put my mind at rest? Thank you Leanne x

Hi Leannes76

My 12 year old son had the same thing, and after many tests including an angiogram the consultant confirmed he had something called optic nerve ‘drusen’. I believe these are usually found in older people, and there isn’t much they can do about them. My son is being monitored for a while, to make sure it doesn’t get any worse, but I am hoping it will have gone altogether. Your situation sounds much the same, and I was extremely worried too, but our consultant didn’t think there was much cause for concern. I hope your mind is put at rest soon.

Thank you so much for replying. I’ve done the thing we shouldn’t do and googled it and it did come up with that cause. Does your son have wear glasses? My little boy has been prescribed them, his right eye is much worse than the left x

Hi again!

Yes, he does wear glasses, but had been for about 3 years before the drusen developed. It was picked up by the optician at a routine check (the photo of one eye showed a shadow), but didn’t have any impact on his vision. He had lots of tests to rule out all other possibilities and arrive at the diagnosis of drusen, none of them bothered him at all. There doesn’t seem to be any known reason why they develop, as far as I can remember, so we can’t do anything to prevent more. Just keeping our fingers crossed! Hope you get some reassurance before too long....

My DH has this and it was diagnosed when he was 7. He wears glasses and suffers slightly with 'visual snow' in his vision which is caused by it. I hope the Drs can put your mind at rest about it.
