To ask what age you started using anti ageing product?

Need a new moisturiser. I've realised I still gravitate towards the same stuff I used in my late teens... is it time I faced facts and started some anti wrinkle skin care?
What age were you when you started?

OP posts:
Furrydogmum · 03/12/2018 19:45

I'm 43, my skin gets dry so I use moisturiser - nothing will stop me from ageing - I just hydrate..

Pixi17 · 03/12/2018 19:46

I've moisturised twice a day since I was a teenager. Now 29, I use Boots Protect and Perfect. Previously, just any moisturiser. I also wear sunscreen on my face every day and have done for several years. I don't think it matters what you use, as long as you use something, and take off make up before bed. I'm no expert, but this is what my Mum and Nanny have always done and they have very good skin still.

Pasithea · 03/12/2018 19:49

Started when I was 7 due to allergies and dry skin.
Now love Estée Lauder and it lasts ages.

megletthesecond · 03/12/2018 19:49

I used nivea and vaseline in my 20's - early 30's. For the last decade I've used Lush Shangri La.
I used an SPF when I was younger but don't use them now.

Hefzi · 03/12/2018 19:49
  1. I think the trick is to listen to your skin, though - I'm not sure I needed it at 25, but at 45, I don't look like I need it. My skin has become drier with age, though it's still combination.
PandorasBag · 03/12/2018 19:50

I'm 59 and don't use anything. My skin's fine.

(I don't sit out in hot sun. I don't smoke and I don't drink. I don't wear make up.)

Hideandgo · 03/12/2018 19:52

Never. And I never will. Nothing is stopping us all aging. Certainly not some marketing heavy cream (and I used to work for one of the major manufacturers mentioned above).

pointythings · 03/12/2018 19:53

I'm 50 and I don't use anything except sunscreen. My skin is fine, I am virtually wrinkle-free. Shame about the arthritis...

I think we would all be happier if we didn't buy into the anti-ageing hype.

gobbynorthernbird · 03/12/2018 19:55

I don't use an anti-ageing moisturiser, but I do use some decent serums. Have done since I was 30.

AnotherClone · 03/12/2018 19:58

Its just a gimmick. I think if you eat healthily, do exercise, don’t smoke or drink too much alcohol and use sun protection etc you might stay looking younger for a bit longer.

FairyBunnyAgain · 03/12/2018 20:00

I've hit 50 and still all the anti ageing or rich moisturisers bring me out in acne. On the plus side I am wrinkle free and use a CACI treatment 4-weekly to help.

I have a light night cream but rarely remember to take off my make up let alone put on any cream as I fall into bed.

Fairylea · 03/12/2018 20:03

I’m 38 and use Revitalift from L’Oréal and I think it works wonders - I really like the fact the day cream has SPF 30. In the warmer months I use sunsense daily defence spf 50 instead.

I don’t necessarily think anti ageing stuff makes you look younger but they can often have really good moisturisers and sun protection which has to help. I worked for Clinique for 15 years and then Chanel for 5 and the main thing that was drummed into me was to always wear sun screen, even through winter.

MrsExpo · 03/12/2018 20:10

In my mid teens when I had awful teenage acne. On the advice of someone who worked as a skin care expert for one of the more pricey brands I stopped washing my face with soap and started using skin care products and sunscreen instead. I’m now 64 and haven’t washed my face for 50 years, use high spf factor moisturiser daily, wear make up occasionally but remove it thoroughly with cleanser and stay hydrated. I have no plans to stop this routine.

Toptheginup · 03/12/2018 20:23

Not anti ageing but always moisturised from being a teen, now I've started to use an spf moisturiser. Nothing can stop ageing. Just make sure your skin is hydrated with serum or moisturiser and stay out of the sun.

mumto2babyboys · 03/12/2018 20:26

Trentinoin or any a-ret on prescription cream/gel is the only thing proven to apply topically to prevent wrinkles. You can buy it on all day chemist quite cheaply.

You have to build up usage of it, otherwise it's Botox to prevent wrinkles getting deeply etched.

If you do nothing and let the wrinkles just develop they will, Botox is less effective once wrinkles become deeply etched. Then you'll need fillers and Botox and eventually surgery to remain line free.

It's a slippery slope with fillers as sometimes people look fine one month and the next their lips and cheek fillers are hugely noticeable and they look completely different.

I've tried no7 serum and it didn't make the slightest bit of difference and I go a bit mad for boots points offers, but just for me it didn't work although some people swear by it

Nearly everyone I know at 30ish is getting baby Botox around their eyes and have no wrinkles yet.

I don't do the lip fillers just personally I don't like that look

If you add up the cost of no7 serum and the fact Superdrug and some clinics do Botox in one area for £100, Botox every few months is effectively not much more expensive than 3 tubes of the no7 serum for the same timeframe assuming one tube lasts a month.

mumto2babyboys · 03/12/2018 20:32

Botox is widely used but most people don't admit to it. Where as with lip and cheek fillers you can't really deny having them because of the increase in the size of your lips

But with Botox apart from some bruising that wears off, it's quite hard to tell unless someone has had so much Botox that they can't move their eyebrows anymore.

SecondTimeCharm · 03/12/2018 20:39

started using high factor daily face sunscreen from late 20s and noticed a big difference. had a good skincare regime from 25ish but I’m not using anything specifically anti aging yet, like a retinol, just acid exfoliators now and again and some decent serums (31 now)

greenpop21 · 03/12/2018 20:39

Always moisturised from late teens. Used Simple stuff. Used vit c day creams then untagging moisturisers but only Loreal etc in 30s and 40s. I now use retinol at night and a cheap Aldi day cream as I have learned that creams just sit in top layers of skin and hydrate it. The only things that work are retinol, botox and surgery. . Haven't sunbathed since my 20s.Never smoked. Now 47.

mumto2babyboys · 03/12/2018 20:45

Oh there is one more thing I'm trying currently too.

I am one of those determined not to look my age but lack of sleep with young children and too much coffee to get through the day doesn't help me much lol

It's called myfacepillow.

It has good reviews and there is lots of evidence that sleeping on your side causes wrinkles and on your chest area as well. There are other versions of it, it's basically just to make sure you sleep on your back all night I haven't found it very comfortable but trying to get used to it.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 03/12/2018 20:59

I've used anti ageing products since I was 24,I'm 38 now and can pass for 30

MuttleyLaugh · 03/12/2018 21:02

‘Nearly everyone I know at 30ish is getting baby Botox.’ Am I misunderstanding this? If not it’s a bit tragic.

mumto2babyboys · 03/12/2018 21:12

Botox is different from fillers. You can barely notice Botox if it is done well but with fillers you can as the person looks drastically different sometimes.

It's called baby Botox because they inject smaller amounts but it works

If you don't want wrinkles... no cream is going to prevent them from forming creams just hydrate the skin.

And some of us don't want wrinkles

I think of it as an investment as in 10-15 years hopefully I will be able to avoid surgery which costs so much more than Botox yet gives the same effect.

They recommend starting Botox before any deep set wrinkles have formed otherwise it won't be as effective.

I take care of my teeth in the hope they won't decay and I will need fillings or root canals in the future

I try not to overeat in the hope I won't gain any weight but it does fluctuate.

Plus I get very little sleep with young children so I sort of need to do something to make me look normal. It's life, not Tragic

I still have dark circles under my eyes... rely on touché Eclat

I just no deep wrinkles yet because of getting Botox regularly and using trentinoin

If you are very talking to someone who says oh they just keep it of the sun etc but they can barely move their eyebrows. That's Botox and that's why they look young

Hideandgo · 03/12/2018 21:15

These threads always depress me. Men don’t have to do this shit to themselves.

SugarTwist · 03/12/2018 21:18

I’ve always moisturised I but changed to anti aging type creams around 29, I’m 32 now and my skin has really went down hill since turning 30. I use a mixture of olay night and day cream and Estée Lauder serum

Popc0rn · 03/12/2018 21:25

Used sunscreen since I was 16. I don't think anything else for can slap on your face actually works for anti ageing.
