Need a new moisturiser. I've realised I still gravitate towards the same stuff I used in my late teens... is it time I faced facts and started some anti wrinkle skin care?
What age were you when you started?

Early .. about 15 I used a moisturiser every night then moved up as I aged .. untold I do t look my age . No idea if it's luck or what .

bananafish81 · 04/12/2018 13:03

I was told by a medical person not to use sunscreen all the time because it blocks Vit D. Is that true?

My consultant dermatologist told me to wear spf 50 on my face but get some sun on other areas of exposed skin, and take a good supplement, eat vitamin D rich foods

I wear spf 50 daily and my vitamin D levels are in high- normal range.

picklemebaubles · 04/12/2018 13:20

I'm about to turn 50, with a patchy history of skin care. Some years I've been consistent with everything including the spf moisturiser, other years I've done nothing at all.

I don't have many wrinkles at all, but my face is starting to settle into discontented lines. I blame this on an extremely stressful 2 years where I have had to press my lips together constantly to stop myself telling it like it is.

So I've started with proper skin care again. Sigh.

Ghanagirl · 04/12/2018 13:26

@mumto2babyboys
I would post some pics but too outing as my eyes are quite distinctive.
I’m of afrocarribean heritage and although some black women my age do have wrinkles quite a few don’t particularly if your weight doesn’t fluctuate.

brookshelley · 04/12/2018 13:29

@ghanagirl I was just about to say that many women of my ethnicity (Afro Caribbean) are wrinkle free at 50. Pale skin ages more quickly. Africans and Asians tend to look younger than Europeans at the same age due to melanin.

Tunnocks34 · 04/12/2018 13:43

I have wore spf 50 everyday on my fave and neck since I was 16.

I also have used anti wrinkle cream since then too.

I’m only 29 now but I do look a lot younger. On school trips I always get mistaken for a year 11.

Cherries101 · 04/12/2018 14:03

Sunscreen and multivitamin from 18. I’m 37 now — no wrinkles or grey hair yet

ReadWriteDraw · 04/12/2018 14:10

Before I opened this thread I knew there would be so many people saying “I’ve used lard and a lump of coal all my life and i look fine”!!

Well I’m 45 and I think anti aging products do make a difference. A good natural face oil (rosehip etc) is amazing for fine lines. Glycolic pads (alpha H, Superdrug etc) slough off dead skin and are much kinder than a mechanical scrub and your face definitely looks brighter after using. Peptides and retinol (use spf) just make your skin look a little bit finer and more awake. Yes aging is privilege but if my face doesn’t look like a rhino then all the better!!

greenpop21 · 04/12/2018 15:30

Ahh 37, it all starts to slide come 45!

greenpop21 · 04/12/2018 15:32

Most vit D is taken in through exposing limbs to sun. Spf your face always and take vit D October to April at least in UK as we don't get sun on our limbs then.

sizzledrizz · 04/12/2018 15:34

I'm 51 and use a facial oil if my skin is dry. I use an SPF every day though.

Mishappening · 04/12/2018 15:35

I'm 70. I have never used anything but a simple moisturiser like oil of Ulay (depends what's on offer in the supermarket). So basically I have not started using anti-ageing products yet.

lexxy2793 · 04/12/2018 15:35

I'm 25 now and have used anti aging creams since I was 22 and dying my hair since 17

Cherries101 · 04/12/2018 16:38

@greenpop21 - not for mum who had the same skincare regimine. Spf and vitamins are the real ‘miracle’ worker when it comes to ageing nothing else.

Ollivander84 · 04/12/2018 16:50

@Cherries101 retinol too and vitamin C on its own. They're the only proven things
I think moisturiser is always a good thing if you have drier skin especially if you're using retinol
I've noticed a lot of friends the same age have wrinkles and lines around eyes which I don't but I think that's because I'm so careful with the sun
And genetics, both my parents have aged well

Flewog · 04/12/2018 16:53

I'm 33 now and started using anti aging cream about 10 years ago when I was 32.

secondarymincepie · 04/12/2018 17:00

My mother is 60 and doesn't have particularly wrinkly skin. She's always used expensive face creams but has also spent her life chain smoking, drinking gin, and tanning herself the colour of leather so it's a miracle she doesn't have skin like a withered teabag.
I think genetics plays a much bigger role than any anti-aging products.

MiaowMix · 04/12/2018 17:05

@secondarymincepie I'm like your mum (younger though!) and I've always used good moisturisers (since my late teens), but nothing else. I do look much younger than my age even though I have a few faint lines. But I do smoke, sunbathe, drink. I also do dancing and sport, eat really well and look after my skin. My skin is quite olive, don't know if that makes a difference. But most people tell me I look early 40s. They could be lying of course! But I do think a lot is down to genetics. And top notch moisturiser.

PandorasBag · 05/12/2018 07:48

Well here I am (cropped) - and no, i don't look like I'm 21. But why, in my late 50s would I want to look 21?

To ask what age you started using anti ageing product?
Gatehouse77 · 05/12/2018 07:51

I haven't.

I use a facial scrub in the shower daily and moisturise with Aldi day cream afterwards.

That's it.

However, I don't wear make up so don't have any of that bother.

SaucyJack · 05/12/2018 07:57

I don’t always bother- but when I do, I buy stuff that has vitamin A derivatives in it (retinol/retinoids) as AFAIA that’s the only anti-ageing product that’s been proven to work.

It’s in No 7 protect&perfect, but you can get much cheaper versions online from The Ordinary.

Amberheartkitty · 05/12/2018 08:04

I agree with the genetics playing the biggest factor. My mil smokes 20 a day Drinks coffee constantly. Rarely eats anything healthy. Always been a sun worshipper. She looks fantastic for her age.
I also know a health fanatic who looks terrible for her age. I thought she was 15 years older than she is😳
I used to work for a skincare company when I was young. In training They showed us a side by side of twins one who used spf and creams and the other nothing. Just looked like one had makeup on and the other didn’t. Not really a difference in ageing 🤷‍♀️

I hope I have the privilege of getting old.

Snappymcsnappy · 05/12/2018 08:47

I’m 29 and use wrinkle oil
