Need a new moisturiser. I've realised I still gravitate towards the same stuff I used in my late teens... is it time I faced facts and started some anti wrinkle skin care?
What age were you when you started?

OP posts:
JaceLancs · 03/12/2018 21:27

I’m 54 not used any yet
I don’t have any wrinkles either
I do use sunscreen in summer and keep my face out of the sun as much as possible

Fairylea · 03/12/2018 21:27

I disagree with the comment about men. My dh and his friends are all just as into skincare as I am. They all use moisturisers and spf.

I also know a lot of women who don’t do / use anything skincare wise.

It isn’t a women / men thing anymore.

Seeingadistance · 03/12/2018 21:30

I've been rubbing a splodge of E45 cream onto my face every morning since my early twenties. If I don't do that, my skin feels tight and itchy. Now 50 and skin a bit wrinkly, but that's because I'm 50!

mumto2babyboys · 03/12/2018 21:31

All these people saying they don't have wrinkles
Post some photos of just your eye area so you can't be identified then, if you genuinely don't have crows feet or wrinkles

Watsername · 03/12/2018 21:33

Mid 30s (now early 40s). I use a moisturiser with added SPF, so it's not a 'proper' anti-ageing cream (which I find very harsh on my skin). I read somewhere that it's sun damage which causes most ageing, so it's always wise to use a light SPF cream from any age.

mumto2babyboys · 03/12/2018 21:33

No wrinkles at 54?

Seriously that's impossible without surgery or Botox or fillers or all 3.

CaptainShark · 03/12/2018 21:37

I'm late 20s and don't plan to use them, just moisturiser for me (cocoa butter). Someone told me years ago that the anti wrinkle creams work by temporarily plumping your skin (like plumping lip glosses that used to be everywhere) and don't have any long term effects, so if you stop using the cream, you're back to square one, but in the long run they make your skin more wrinkled by plumping and stretching it... I have no idea if this is right but maybe look into it op if you're thinking about starting to use them

dogzdinner · 03/12/2018 21:45

I know a couple of women 50+ with no wrinkles. I think it's just genetics.

I wish women could stop seeing wrinkles as such a terrible thing to have.

GreenDinosaur · 03/12/2018 21:55

Isn't wearing sunscreen on your face all greasy and doesn't it block your pores up?
I hate sunscreen and see it as a unfortunate necessity on holiday if I'm honest. I can't imagine having to wear it every day.
Is there one that's light and good to use? Also for those prone to spots if possible?

I just use a tiny bit of Clinique anti-blemish solutions on a morning and that's it, never done anything else (except cheaper stuff when I was younger). But maybe I should?

38 and counting....

eurochick · 03/12/2018 22:04

My mum is in her 60s and doesn't have wrinkles. She has oily skin. She hated it for years as she got so many breakouts but there is clearly an upside.

Talkinpeece · 03/12/2018 22:07

Not yet
am early 50's

MattFreisCheekyDimples · 03/12/2018 22:58

This is a bit of a depressing thread. Interesting how many of us who are over 50 don't feel the need. I think our generation has been luckier than some when it comes to expectations about appearance. If I had to do all the Hollywood style hair and make up that's fashionable now I doubt I'd get anything else done.

MonicaGellerHyphenBing · 03/12/2018 23:08

I'm only 28 and just use moisturiser in the morning. I have a few anti-aging eye creams in my bathroom cabinet but working full-time and running round after a toddler means I can never be arsed applying them.

My mum was extremely anal about sun protection when I was growing up and I'm so grateful for that, so many people my age look like leather handbags already Shock

bananafish81 · 03/12/2018 23:19

Isn't wearing sunscreen on your face all greasy and doesn't it block your pores up?

Only if you're buying the wrong kind

If you get a light oil free non comodogenic sunscreen then it's not greasy and won't block pores, and will sit nicely under makeup without going bobbly

I hate sunscreen and see it as a unfortunate necessity on holiday if I'm honest. I can't imagine having to wear it every day.

Daily spf is really the only thing that will make a tangible difference to ageing (apart from not smoking) - prescription tretinoin has some effect on wrinkles but it can't undo sun damage

If you're in any way bothered about wrinkles / fine lines then it seems bonkers to not wear spf (and even more bonkers to buy anti ageing creams).

It sounds like you hate sunscreen because you've not tried a decent one.

Is there one that's light and good to use? Also for those prone to spots if possible?

I use Elta MD spf 46, which is perfect for my acne prone skin

I also like Biore watery essence spf 50

mumto2babyboys · 04/12/2018 06:57

Honestly I have never met anyone over 50 who doesn't have some wrinkles. My own family and colleagues included

If you are magically wrinkle free at 50+ then how so?

Everyone uses spf, it's in nearly everything now and millennial Australians have been using spf since they were born.

I don't think they look any younger despite being brought up on the slip slap slip gov campaigns to always wear protection and cover up in the sun.

Would love to know what the people who are saying they have no wrinkles naturally at 50 are actually using

or is it to do with decaying eyesight and no longer being able to see fine lines in the mirror?!

If there is some beauty hack I am missing out on please tell me and i will start doing it myself

BelindasRedPlasticHandcuffs · 04/12/2018 09:28

I've always used moisturisers (not necessarily expensive ones) but have started with acid toning/spf and anti ageing creams in the last year or so, so 26/27.

I've been using anti aging hand cream since about 23 though as the women in my family all have hands that look decades older than they are!

Ghanagirl · 04/12/2018 09:33

I’m 48 and have really smooth wrinkle free skin, I’ve always moisturised but change products and never use anti-aging creams

JoyofSticks · 04/12/2018 09:33

I am 51 and haven't started using anti-ageing products yet and I don't think I shall. I'm ageing and I like it, I like my few grey strands and not giving much of a shit about what people think of me. To me, ageing [thus far] has been liberating.

JoyofSticks · 04/12/2018 09:35

I do use moisturiser most days, I use whichever organic, vegan, paraben and sls free one is on offer in holland and barret.

Ollivander84 · 04/12/2018 09:43
  1. Started using retinol, and then Botox at 34
Ollivander84 · 04/12/2018 09:43

Oh and SPF 50!

mypoosmellsofcinnamon · 04/12/2018 10:12

Went through phases of trying things a few years back, spent quite a lot of money and saw no real change, and now just use some basic moisturiser on dry patches (combination skin) I have some wrinkles, I'm 47, they look better when I take my contact lenses out :) Seriously though, my husband thinks I'm gorgeous and no-one recoils in horror when I'm out in public, that's good enough for me

Popc0rn · 04/12/2018 10:27

I work with a few women in their 50s who have lovely skin (I only know their age because they had a party for their 'big' birthdays). They have a few lines when they laugh and make facial expressions, so not totally wrinkle free, but they look lovely. They've stayed out of the sun, drink plenty of water (we're not allowed to drink anything else at work so that helps!), don't smoke, regularly exercise, some use fancy skincare routines, some don't. Sounds cheesy, but they all have a 'zest' for life - hobbies outside of work that they are passionate about and a positive outlook in general, which I really think helps keep you feeling and looking young!

recklessruby · 04/12/2018 10:50

I have used oil of Olay (was ulay) since I was 15. Need sun protection as I have pale freckly skin.
I m 50 now and have a few lines around the eyes when I smile and a little frown line (not surprised after 30 years of parenthoodGrin) but my skin is still mostly firm and unlined. It s always been very oily though.

dogzdinner · 04/12/2018 12:46

I was told by a medical person not to use sunscreen all the time because it blocks Vit D. Is that true?
