Councils should start taxing dog owners

NigelGresley · 03/12/2018 18:10

In order to afford more dog wardens and have more resources to deal with those people who don’t pick up after their dogs.

I live in what would be considered to be a nice area, however it seems that half the dog owners can’t be bothered to pick up after their dogs and the streets are an absolute mess. I’m absolutley sick of it.

Our council has to make even more cuts over the next year, which will be felt more severely than any others in the past as this is now going to seriously impact social care, SEN provision, social work etc.... councils could generate additional income to deal with the problem caused by irresponsible dog owners.

You’ll probably ask how is it fair for all dog owners to be penalised due to a “minority”. However you could apply this argument to many other areas that we all collectively pay for, but may not benefit from.

So it’s time to take action to deal with dirty dog owners once and for all!!

I’ve no sympathy for “can’t bend over” either. If you do not have a means to pick up after it, you should not have a dog. It really is that simple. There is no excuse.

Starlighting888 · 04/12/2018 00:34

I’m a dog owner and annoys me when others don’t pick up their poops - but there seems to be hardly bins around (maybe this is council cuts?).

Wondering if I will get a refund for not having children and having private medical insurance? Can we bring in fines for parents who let their kids annoy me Grin

palooka47 · 04/12/2018 01:09

I was walking my dog once and some kids saw my poo bag and asked for it-they were playing a 'game' by taking the bags of poo out the bin to chuck at each other. Maybe if that caught on nobody would care any longer... *

  • I am joking, but It's a true story!
Joboy · 04/12/2018 02:03

Dog poo in pastic bag ....... pastic is bad for planet......
look at how share public places .... As a dog walker I share public spaces with drug user , drug dealer , people having sex . Other dog walker ,
and people with kids trying to picnics in dog walking place , toddlers using bike by a river ,
People need to realise dog are animails and to train child to behave around animails.
As for dog poo floor you your eyes and don't step in it in .
Dog poo is not as bad needles surely.
Or you kid being around drug dealers .
Or your little darling seeing someone have sex .
If dog walker are not aloud in park .
Council will need to build and police dog parks but normally will have nobody but drug dealer using it .

SleightOfMind · 04/12/2018 02:15

Or one very very unwell dog...

Grin

I’ve got dogs, toddlers and a teenager (don’t think he has Park Liife proclivities Blush).

Dfil is a bit ranty, racist and brexiteerery though.

I don’t think I’ve left any of their poo anywhere over the years but I still clearly don’t have a leg to stand on.

RCohle · 04/12/2018 02:18

I'm not a dog owner. I can't think of the last time I was inconvenienced by, or even saw, dog shit.

Some people on this thread sound positively hysterical in their vitriol against dog owners and dog shit. Who on earth actually thinks DNA testing dog shit is a reasonable idea?

Yes - must tell that to the partially sighted and blind and the next person in a wheelchair I meet / it’s your fault for not avoiding it! Geez

WendyWoofer · 04/12/2018 10:49

All those suggesting a dog license - what good will a dog license do? The last time I had a dog license was in the 80's (before they were done away with). It cost 37p and was basically a piece of paper stating I own a dog. That's it.

What would you like to see on the dog license and why would a license prevent people from leaving their dogs crap around?

We have an active dog warden in our area. £100 spot fines if your dog is allowed on the sport fields, childrens play areas and anywhere dogs are not allowed. Also £100 spot fines if your dog craps and you don't pick it up. Also £100 spot fines if a warden asks you to produce at least 3 poo bags and you can't.

We don't have a dog poo problem.

vandrew4 · 04/12/2018 10:57

rumbledoll you're disgusting and lazy. Clean up your dog's shit

badlydrawnperson · 04/12/2018 10:59

I think all dogs should be DNA registered and their DNA registered to their owners. Warders could track down the offenders through the poo. The wardens could be paid for by a tax on dog owners.

Good grief - people actually seriously think like this?

MissElaineNeus · 04/12/2018 11:41

Taxation according to usage of facilities would be a good thing IMO. I'd pay tax on my dog but get a massive refund as I've not had any children and I don't drive. If I got a refund each year I'd not used the NHS then I'd be quids in too.

Wordthe · 04/12/2018 11:48

We do not levy a tax on people for having children because children are not a net cost to society like dogs are
the dog benefits no one but it's owners and everyone else has to put up with the shit and nuisance of the dog
The work that we put into raising children pays off with interest because they create society they are the next generation
Dogs do not benefit society as a whole
we should not tax people who have children we should reward them because they are working for the rest of us creating new people who then go on to create society and help us advance as a species

Satsumaeater · 04/12/2018 11:56

Why are so many posters asking why there isn't a child tax?

Children don't shit all over parks and streets! Dogs do, and a lot of their owners don't clean up after them.

I've never stepped in human excrement.

Come to Fulham, we have loads of human poo in the park. As it turns out, if you smoke crack, you'll need to poo pretty sharpish.

The reason there's mention of a child tax is because they're heavy users of the council services. Before we get to the 'but they're future taxpayers' argument - probably not. By the time today's babies are middle-aged, there will be a citizens' income to avoid civil unrest owing to job automation.

So yes, there should be a dog tax; and yes, there should be a child tax.

WendyWoofer · 04/12/2018 12:07

There are plenty of shitty nappies left on the beaches and picnic areas during the summer months. Parents can't be arsed to bin them or take them home!

Beaches and picnic areas are much cleaner places to visit when it's cold or raining.

AlaskanOilBaron · 04/12/2018 12:08

Get yourself biodegradable ones STAT please.

Try to consider seeing things from other points of view, like people who live in dense, urban areas and have loads of dog shit at their local park.

RangeRider · 04/12/2018 12:23

Councils should tax parents.
Totally. They don't teach their children to put their rubbish in a bin instead of chucking it on the floor so they should be made to pay. And tax the bin men who drop peoples' recycling on the floor and can't be arsed to pick it up, every week. And tax people who eat fast food because of the ones who chuck their wrappers on the floor. And tax the youngsters who play football on the local pitches because they drop mud off their boots all over the paths, despite having one of those shoe cleaning brush things there. At this rate we won't need income tax at all.
Some people are selfish shits. Try eliminating selfishness and then all the other problems will go away.

DeadCertain · 04/12/2018 12:23

I lived in NI for a number of years where there is a requirement for a dog license. The responsible owners licensed their dogs, those who weren't didn't. It made not a blind bit of difference in terms of dog poo and I have never been anywhere with more out of control dogs either (the area I lived in - cannot generalise for the whole of NI!!). There is a huge stray problem and puppy farming is rife. So I really cannot see that bringing back a dog licence would help at all.

Rio18 · 04/12/2018 12:51

The councils do need to provide more bins and maybe poo bags like they do in other countries.

I would be up for paying a license but then I am a responsible dog poo picking up dog owner.

I always take a load of poo bags out with me but I'm not sure I'd be able to produce 3 for a dog warden if my dogs had been busy already.

I used 5 in a short walk the other day (I'm sure my 2 save it up!)

It's not exactly the seventies anymore though is it? I hardly ever see dog poo these days.
Most people wouldn't know what a white dog poo was these days and they were everywhere when I was growing up.
