My guess is around 40% of the issue/dilemma led ones (excluding the what's your favourite flavour of crisps, i fancy/hate x celebrity/can i give my toddler calpol type ones ) are either total fantasy or heavily embellished.

Giveaways are usually

  • original story too dramatic
  • events move too quickly
-situation flips on its head suddenly
  • massive drip feeds in the middle of the thread.

Am i being too cynical here?

OP posts:
DramaAlpaca · 02/12/2018 13:39

Nope. Not cynical enough I reckon. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was way more than 40%.

brizzledrizzle · 02/12/2018 13:39

I've got no idea - what I do know is that I never spot them unless they are glaringly obviously along the lines of 'I took my mother to an orgy with some axe murderers'

FunkyKingston · 02/12/2018 13:42

'I took my mother to an orgy with some axe murderers'

What do you mean, my old dear likes nothing nore than a cream tea, a nice sit on her favourite bench and then a trip to the axe murderers orgy, so long as she's back for songs of praise and the strictly dance off.

Songs of Praise and Strictly? That's a tad excessive isn't it?

FunkyKingston · 02/12/2018 13:46

Songs of Praise and Strictly? That's a tad excessive isn't it?

Dammit i knew I'd get rumbled somehow.

OP posts:
waxy1 · 02/12/2018 13:46

Are you making this up?

FunkyKingston · 02/12/2018 13:47

Are you making this up?

Yes. I. Reality i think it is 42.736% that are made up, but told you all 40 to sde if you'd buy it.
And you did.

Suckers.

OP posts:
SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst · 02/12/2018 13:49

Waaaaaaaayyyy more than 42.736% Grin

GallicosCats · 02/12/2018 13:56

I reckon you're spot on. And I don't think they're always that obvious either. It's usually the ones that get you heavily invested with portrayals of schools that bear a strong resemblance to Dotheboys Hall or Mrs Brisket's establishment for young ladies. Or the 'I'm getting married next week I can't go through with it' ones.

There have been some quite long running ones on here where I've wondered what the real story was, especially where the OP gets chippy and defensive and then melts away into cyberspace never to be heard from again.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 02/12/2018 14:24

I suspect a large number of them are made up . I also expect that an awful lot of the replies are made up.

thefuriousfuggler · 02/12/2018 16:27

You are all being unreasonable. It's 47.953% and SOP is now on in the afternoon so your mum is fibbing Grin

Classicfm · 02/12/2018 16:31

I reckon a lot of posters might know of a situation - though it isn’t their own situation - and post a version of it, just to see how people would react.

Classicfm · 02/12/2018 16:31

Because often a story has a slight ring of truth but then many elements that seem very exaggerated.

woolduvet · 02/12/2018 16:41

Bloody loads this week. Some really odd posts if I can spot them.

EmeraldShamrock · 02/12/2018 16:42

I am really bad and late off the mark at spotting the troll threads. Blush

brizzledrizzle · 02/12/2018 16:43

and SOP is now on in the afternoon so your mum is fibbing grin

How dare you doubt what the PP is saying, you don't know that where she lives doesn't have it's own time zone Grin

Frogletmamma · 02/12/2018 16:44

I don't make them up but often ask random questions about vol-au-vents or some such.

Unsureofmyselfx · 02/12/2018 16:46

I had one deleted for trolling years ago. Was actually genuine though!

OldBrownShoe · 02/12/2018 16:48

I had an aibu under a different username that was picked up by the daily mail. It wasn’t made up as such, the bones of the dilemma were true, but I’d changed quite a lot of details specifically because of the possibility it could be.

manicinsomniac · 02/12/2018 16:51

I read mumsnet as a fiction site. Great for entertainment but I don't think of it as real life.

I know some of it will be real, some exaggerated and some made up. But I don't have to think about which stories are which because I'm just reading them all as fictional.

AamdC · 02/12/2018 16:52

I think a lot of the CF probably have a grain of truth in them but the more teplys they get the more the Op replys and the threads get more and more ludicrous , if you think its a troll it more than likely is i usually havr a look on Reddit to see if its mafe it over there ....

OhNoes · 02/12/2018 16:59

Yes! A lot of them have a similar style of writing too ~ I can usually tell from the first post if it's going to be one of those threads.

FunkyKingston · 02/12/2018 18:29

How dare you doubt what the PP is saying, you don't know that where she lives doesn't have it's own time zone

Yes you only got a 'snap shot of my life' so don't judge!!!!!

Fwiw she records Songs of praise as it clashes with her favourite show on Babestation.

OP posts:
thefuriousfuggler · 02/12/2018 19:10

Wow. Massive drip feed if your mum has her own time zone Hmm

I am off to forensically analyse the schedules to see what actually clashes with SOP Grin

Also, I am beginning to strongly suspect that the axe murderers orgy might just be made up to make your post seem more realistic unless of course all the axe murderers are twins

brizzledrizzle · 02/12/2018 20:41

unless of course all the axe murderers are twins

Ssssh! My twins have managed to stay out of the Daily Fail for years and now you're going to get them on the front page Angry
