WIBU to head to walk-in centre for a headache?

BabySham4U · 01/12/2018 19:43

I've had a headache for two days. Had a bit of a fever yesterday but it's normal now. My head is killing me. It's hard to even type this now.

I'm in a lot of pain and starting to feel quite nauseous.

WIBU to go to walk in (partially also because ibuprofen and paracetamol aren't working and I'm unsure of what I can take whilst breast feeding)? Or would I be wasting their time?

The main reason I worry is because I NEVER get headaches...

Did you have an epidural when giving birth?

I had a splitting headache after my epidural and had to go back into hospital to have a 'patch' done.
Something to do with the fluid leaking out, I can't remember exactly what it was though.

Either way, definitely go to the OOH.

PrincessConsuelaBannanaHammock · 01/12/2018 20:12

Yeah I would ring tonight for advice then. Some people say codine is safe when breastfeeding but I was advised it wasn't, your probably best ringing and seeing what they can give you. It most likely will be a migraine or something but probably best to be on the safe side. It's horrible when your breast feeding and not sure what you can take. Hope you feel better soon

BabySham4U · 01/12/2018 20:13

@WhoTookTheChristmasCookie I didn't, but I have had a lumbar puncture so know the pain you mean. It was the most intense head pain. I couldn't physically move after!

I had codeine whilst breastfeeding. Postnatally in hospital and at home, I thought it was ibuprofen that you couldn’t have? But that may well have been because I was on warfarin? Scary times. But a lesson that even ‘fit, well, young people’ who’ve had previous normal pregnancies can have unexpected things happen. Your baby needs you well x

userabcname · 01/12/2018 20:17

I was given codeine after childbirth and was breastfeeding a newborn!!! I assumed it was safe as it was given to me in hospital under those circumstances!

JaniceBattersby · 01/12/2018 20:18

I would not go to the walk in with a headache. It’s probably just a migraine. If you’re breastfeding, are you drinking lots and lots? I get terrible dehydration headaches.

Caprisunorange · 01/12/2018 20:21

I don’t really find walk ins very helpful to be honest, but I think you should go. It’s just you’ll be there for bloody hours and the GP probably won’t do anything when they do get round to seeing you. But I think because of how recently you’ve given birth you should be seen

Caprisunorange · 01/12/2018 20:22

By the way if you call 111 they can make you an appointment so you’re not walk in (you’ll still have to wait around but maybe not as long)

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 01/12/2018 20:24

@BabySham4U excruciating isn't it! That wasn't fun, what with a preemie newborn and all.

Bagadverts · 01/12/2018 20:25

Perhaps phone OOH GP and ask. Then follow what they say.
For me (but maybe not you) I try to steer clear of screens/phones when I have bad headaches because the type of light doesn't seem good for me.

Feefeetrixabelle · 01/12/2018 20:27

As long as your hydrated and have been pooping normally then go get checked out ASAP. It’s not normal for you so it needs checking.

CaMePlaitPas · 01/12/2018 20:27

Get yourself checked OP asap, it could be postpartum preeclampsia.

FooFightersFan · 01/12/2018 20:28

Try taking aspirin - although if you’re breastfeeding, I’m not sure if this is contraindicated.
I had a migraine last week that lasted 6 days. Aspirin was the only thing that made me feel better.
A high dose works, I take 3 tablets. I felt better within 2 hours.
But please check the leaflet that comes with it before you take it x

DaysOfCurlySpencer · 01/12/2018 20:28

I had a Hellish headache which lasted a couple of days, it turned into flu and I was in bed for 2 weeks.

DeezMutts · 01/12/2018 20:30

Phone 111 for advice op.

RiskIt4Biscuit · 01/12/2018 20:31

If you do not suffer with migraines (and didn't before pregnancy), then I'd really urge you to get checked out.

It could obviously just be a migraine, but what if it isn't?
If it is a migraine, then they'll probably be able to prescribe or advice you on medication that is safe for you to take.

Going to the walk-in centre is IMO very different than going to A&E or calling an ambulance for something fairly minor.
I would also suggest calling NHS 111 first.

I hope you feel better soon :)

ToffeeSauce · 01/12/2018 20:32

Chronic migraine sufferer here.

Codeine is not the best drug for a migraine (assuming that’s what you have). Aspirin is better. Dissolve three 300mg tablets in a fizzy drink and that should help a lot. If still bad go to a pharmacy and see if you can buy some Sumatriptan. It’s expensive but it works. No idea if you can take while bf though.

BabySham4U · 01/12/2018 20:33

Oh I wouldn't go to a&e for this!

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'm in so much pain. Should probably stop checking mn!

I got a terrible headache two weeks post partum, nothing touched it. Turned out to be pre-eclampsia and BP was through the roof. You can develop PE up to 6 weeks post birth.

I wouldn't be taking any chances and would get checked out, just take baby with you.

I ended up being readmitted to hospital for several days whilst my bp was stabilised.

GruciusMalfoy · 01/12/2018 20:36

If this is something unusual for you then it really doesn't do any harm to get it checked out. It could be hormonal (I got my first migraine with aura just after giving birth) or As you suspect it may be down to being under the weather. You won't do the wrong thing if you decide you need to ask a professional.

tinkiiev · 01/12/2018 20:36

I had this last year - never get headaches and then had one so bad I could hardly lift my head off the pillow. Also made me throw up. It got worse over two days and then DH took me to the GP, who sent me to the hospital in case it was a brain haemorrhage.

It wasn't - the doc at the hospital said she thought it was a virus. Anyway, it got better, hasn't happened again, but certainly nobody thought I was wasting anyone's time! (I had been worried about the same thing and DH made me go)

MissRhubarb · 01/12/2018 20:36

I'm in so much pain.

If you aren't normally prone to headaches like this then you need to get it checked out. Please call 111 or go to the walk-in.

QuestionableMouse · 01/12/2018 20:37

No one should be diagnosing the op. It could just be a migraine but it could be something more serious.

Op you need to be checked out. What happens if you collapse and baby is left alone? Please phone 111 at least and speak to someone.

StripyDeckchair · 01/12/2018 20:40

Don't take aspirin or codeine whilst breastfeeding without medical advice. Call 111 right now. Don't wait. I would be concerned about post partum pre eclampsia, even though it is unlikely. You need to be seen urgently.

bringbackthestripes · 01/12/2018 20:41

If you had spoken to a pharmacist today they could have advised re medication and arranged/taken a BP check.
If you are concerned enough to post on MN then you obviously need to speak to someone so give extended hours a call now and save yourself another few hours of stressing. Hope you feel better soon op.
