Leaving dogs on their own

I’m pretty sure I’m definitely not being at all unreasonable but anyway! Someone I know fairly well is planning to go away for a few days without getting adequate care for their multiple dogs. For example, they plan to leave on the Friday late afternoon and come back on the Sunday morning. Someone will go in on the Friday evening, Saturday morning and Saturday evening to let the dogs out for the toilet and feed them. One is kept in a cage when left alone so he will be crated this entire time. They will have no other company.

I’m not being unreasonable to say this is completely out of order am I?

They are likely to have their house eaten and smothered in shit. Dogs should ideally be left no longer than 4 hours a day.

ChaosMoon · 30/11/2018 17:06

Wow. Really thought this would be about leaving them while at work, which I'm not automatically against, but all weekend? That's horrendous. And cruel.

lilyheather1 · 30/11/2018 17:08

Whilst some dogs are more than happy to be left all day, others hate being alone for anymore than an hour or two. However the situation you describe is absolutely horrendous! Just letting a dog out for a wee is not enough time for socialisation, and I'm speechless that one of the dogs will be crated for the entire time. It's deplorable.

hendal · 30/11/2018 17:10

YANBU. That is utterly unacceptable, those poor dogs.
I don’t know why people like this bother having dogs as they clearly don’t care about them. It’s not enough to just feed them and let them out so they don’t shit inside.

Sallygoroundthemoon · 30/11/2018 17:11

Totally unacceptable. A cat would be ok but a dog, no way, and no animal should be crated like that for more than a few hours/at night.

poppy196 · 30/11/2018 17:11

That's so cruel poor dogs .
You so can't leave a dog caged for so long .
Yanbu, please talk some sense into owners .

Birdsgottafly · 30/11/2018 17:11

If the dogs have bonded then it's fine.

A single dog? Then it would be a no.

They might not be getting left for much more than four hours, except overnight, when you work out the timings.

Birdsgottafly · 30/11/2018 17:13

The one that's caged, what's the usial arrangements?

It also depends on the breed etc.

Junkmail · 30/11/2018 17:13

Wtf? That’s so unacceptable. Dogs need to toilet more than once a day! And that’s aside from being left with no company and attention for the whole weekend. Why get dogs if you don’t want to have to make provision for them?? Ugh. Tell this person they need to book a house sitter (that’s what I do) or arrange kennels for these poor dogs. They deserve better.

Bunnymumma · 30/11/2018 17:20

This is hideous and nothing short of animal abuse. Really deplorable. People like this shouldn't have pets.

MamaLovesMango · 30/11/2018 17:23

My dog is happy to be left most of the day with her toys, water, the radio and her chair but this is totally unacceptable, you’re not wrong.

CryingMessFFS · 30/11/2018 17:26

I’ve read it as they leave afternoon Friday, someone is coming to let them out on the Friday night, they’ll be let out twice on the Saturday and once on the Sunday by which time the owners will be back. I don’t see it as a huge problem tbh - not ideal but they’ll be let out and fed and it’s only 48 hours. Kennels would be similar IME
