Am I being unreasonable to think that even if the country did decide it regretted the decision to leave that we can't just say to the EU we made a mistake and want to join again?

They wouldn't let us back under such favourable conditions again

I'm afraid you are right. We can never undo the grave mistake that pig shagging prick did.

Brexshit · 30/11/2018 07:49

That may well be the elusive plan that never existed.

Once we've left we can re-apply to join but we wouldn't have the same special status we have now. New members have to join the Euro and be part of the schengen area. We also have a rebate negotiated in the 80s so the annual cost would be greater. There's also the opt outs that we currently have, that we wouldn't have if we were to re-apply.

Out of all the current members, we have one of the best deals. And we're leaving...

Leafyhouse · 30/11/2018 07:51

One of the arguments against leaving was that if we wanted to rejoin, we'd have to adopt the Euro. Not sure how true that is though, in this time of fake news reports!

Sad but true

I imagine if we revoke A50, we continue on same terms. I don't see what mechanism EU has to not let UK do that.

The real problem would be next time we wanted to negotiate a special opt-out, in the next big treaty. We've burnt a lot of good will and lost leverage for those moments.

badlydrawnperson · 30/11/2018 23:50

OP - I think you are right - but we haven't actually left yet. IIRC the EU has said it would accept us just saying "forget it" at any point up to the March next year deadline. If we leave then ask to join again I imagine you are right, we'd be subject to less favourable terms than our previous membership.
