To ask people with personalised number plates.......why?

itsgoodtobehome · 29/11/2018 15:46

Genuinely interested. I see more and more personalised number plates (Sha70n) on my way home which inspired this thread. Why do you do it? Do you want people to know your name? Do you wear your name on the back of your jacket or on the front of your t-shirt?

I am really intrigued as to why people would flaunt their name, initials, nickname, whatever.....on their car.

MN enlighten me please!!

I quite like clever ones.

A window cleaner has A * MOP Grin

We have one on DP's car, I agreed to it as it hides the age of the car( the age bothers him more than me) so I hoped this would give us a few more years before he would want to upgrade it.

ComtesseDeSpair · 29/11/2018 16:01

Because I’m single, child free, financially successful, have a bit more money than I know what to do with, and I like a bit of garish bling. I’m not particularly bothered by what society at large thinks it says about my personality or aspirations.

ThunderInMyHeart · 29/11/2018 16:02

Well, plenty of people do monogram their handbags, sparklingbrook!

HavelockVetinari · 29/11/2018 16:03

It's a status thing - not my cup of tea but then I'm vain enough to want a Mulberry Bayswater (but can't quite bring myself to spend that much on a handbag, I'm in RL denial about my vanity!).

I do know an Ear, Nose & Throat consultant who has ENT I and ENT II as his plates which does make me grin a bit when I see them.

badlydrawnperson · 29/11/2018 16:03

Saw a great one earlier 'hot kez' she's modest as well

Except it wasn't hot kez - as that's not a valid combination of letters/numbers so I assume it was mangled (like so many) on the plate.

Sparklingbrook · 29/11/2018 16:04

Do they Thunder? Shock I have never seen that, or never noticed. How bizzare.

dontalltalkatonce · 29/11/2018 16:05

I worked with an ortho surgeon who tried to get me to go out with him. Then I saw his plate. 'B0NE D0C'. Creep! Told him to get lost.

IStandWithPosie · 29/11/2018 16:05

A local accountant has “N9 TAX” (no tax) Grin

Bodicea · 29/11/2018 16:07

Dh got one with his (almost) surname and year of birth and then put on my car. His is a lease. So I get to look like the knobhead!
It was an investment I guess and just a bit personal. It’s already worth more than we paid. I can remember the number easily too.

Sparklingbrook · 29/11/2018 16:07

Theres one round here that says BIG POO but there's definitely a six in there and a zero or two.

Oblomov18 · 29/11/2018 16:08

Dh has one. Can't see the appeal personally.

ComtesseDeSpair · 29/11/2018 16:08

I O TAX parks in the car park of a City investment bank.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 29/11/2018 16:09

Mine was a present and is now worth about four times what was paid for it.

I think some people do have initials or names on handbags. Some certainly have the designer’s name on. Loads of people wear necklaces or bracelets with their name on and t shirts and hoodies with names on.

Ever seen leavers hoodies?

CantWaitToRetire · 29/11/2018 16:12

I haven't got a fully personalised plate in the format of some of these, but I've got my initials so for example, if my real name was Cantwait To Retire, my number plate goes CR68CTR, ie first name, surname, year, first name, middle name, surname. I've got a terrible memory but this way I remember it and it doesn't look too bad.

Sparklingbrook · 29/11/2018 16:13

neither of my DSs liked those Leavers hoodies.

DS's friend had the initials 'JW' and it took me ages to realise that the top he wore a lot was actually just from Jack Wills. I thought it was an odd personalised top. Grin

DiveBombingSeagull · 29/11/2018 16:15

Not my cup of tea but out of the 6 of us in the office, 4 of the others have them as does Boss' DP and all her kids.

There is one locally that is something like M11LLF. ~Yes I judge~

Plaiceholder · 29/11/2018 16:15

But if an old banger has got 'B1G J3FF' or whatever on it it's still an old banger. I don't see how it hides the age of the car for more than a year or two.

Also to paraphrase Viz from a few decades ago, surely it's cheaper to change your name by deed poll to SC18 OGF than your number plate to your name?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 29/11/2018 16:16

We have one that is our family surname, put on BMW to hide the age (DH was working in an industry where he needed to impress). Plate was really cheap at the time. Car has since passed to DS and now DD, (it's about 16 years old) and plate is worth a lot more than the car.

We are shameless new money though.

turquoise88 · 29/11/2018 16:17

Because it makes me look richer than I actually am Grin

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 29/11/2018 16:18

Mine has lasted longer than a designer handbag costing twice as much

SoupDragon · 29/11/2018 16:19

I am really intrigued as to why people would flaunt their name, initials, nickname, whatever.....on their car.

Because they want to. It's really not that hard to understand.

Why do people do anything? Smoke, drink, collect stamps...

itsgoodtobehome · 29/11/2018 16:19

*@tickingthebox and greatduckcookery - seriously why bother commenting?

So it sounds like most people on here who have them don't really like them, or get it. Just like me I guess!! As I said in my OP, I was just asking, not judging. For me, I would just hate the fact that if I did something stupid whilst driving, someone would go 'oh, that itsgoodtobehome' is such a crap driver. I would just rather be anonymous.

It hides the age of the car...

Mine makes mine look at least 18 months older than it is, when I get my new car it will make it look nearly 5 years older Hmm

SmallLa · 29/11/2018 16:20

I got mine as a gift. I love it. Although it doesn't do anything they really were thoughtful in what they found.
I don't think of it as a status thing, I suppose some people would, I just think its the same as someone getting a bag or a jumper..
And I never have to go outside looking to see what it is Wink
