To ask people with personalised number plates.......why?

Genuinely interested. I see more and more personalised number plates (Sha70n) on my way home which inspired this thread. Why do you do it? Do you want people to know your name? Do you wear your name on the back of your jacket or on the front of your t-shirt?

I am really intrigued as to why people would flaunt their name, initials, nickname, whatever.....on their car.

MN enlighten me please!!

I can see how some private reg plates are definitely ‘tacky’ but the one I have is definitely not it’s only 4 characters ’AB90’

bridgetreilly · 30/11/2018 17:42

More money than sense.

Ilovealexa · 30/11/2018 18:39

This thread is hilarious

@EleanorAbernathy ha, we do the same at cat shows. Love the MOGs and breed codes on number plates.

MarmiteTermite · 30/11/2018 19:29

I have a dateless “cherished” plate from the 1950’s. My dad had it in his first car and the letters and number are random - it’s 3 letters and 1 number eg XYZ5. I love it and it reminds me of my lovely dad who died 3 years ago.

XingMing · 30/11/2018 19:48

A relative has a number plate that reads (number) DOG. Apparently there's a farmer who collects old animal name plates, and pays handsomely for them. But regardless, it has increased in value, and the savings in the bank would not have matched it. And this one makes people smile. It's harmless.

But at the serious end of the market, I went to a party once at a friend of a friend's house who had a private museum devoted to a lost car marque for which her late husband had driven race cars in the 1930s, having the (original) race cars with original plates GO 1 to GO 9. Those were worth £££££££.

LucieMorningstar · 30/11/2018 19:54

I’ve got one. It’s my husbands, he bought it years ago. It’s our surname. I’ve got it on my car as his is a company car. I also don’t mind it, actually. Not really bothered if people thinks it’s pointless 🤷🏽‍♀️

Braywatch · 30/11/2018 19:59

The funniest (and by funniest, I mean shittest) one I have ever seen was BEG 44 IT. I hope the owner didn't pay a lot for it!

chocolatebox1 · 30/11/2018 20:13

I love the ones on the Pimlico Plumbers vans such as BOG 1 etc

notyourmummy · 30/11/2018 20:32

Mine was a wedding gift, it has my initials and a word. I thought it was funny and quirky, it was vvvvv cheap as these things go, and I didn't see it as a waste of money as I don't spend money on nights out or expensive clothes, shoes, handbags etc.

Silvercatowner · 30/11/2018 21:04

“N9 TAX” (no tax)

But it isn't 'no tax' its 'N9 tax'. Which makes no sense.

IStandWithPosie · 30/11/2018 21:08

Oh yawn. It’s no tax to anyone with half a brain cell.

nancy75 · 30/11/2018 21:12

My dad has one ( it’s 1 digit & 3 letters) it’s his initials and from a car registered the year he was born. He bought it years ago for 20 quid, it’s now listed as worth close to £100k. Obviously He feels it was £20 well spent!

JeezYouLoon · 30/11/2018 21:17

I have a personal plate, I love it as it's mine and each bit means something to me.

I got a payout from work years ago and I always saved and did the sensible thing, I just thought f%^k it I'm splashing out £250 it was years ago on my own number plate.

I know many people think it's naff but I love it as it's mine all mine Grin

ohhelpohnoitsa · 30/11/2018 21:21

You wont believe me but this very morning I shook my head in disbelief as MINGA drove past me. Why and who? It was an ethnic lady driving ... possibly her name but doesn't translate well.

NorthEndGal · 30/11/2018 21:24

My friend has one, it's their nickname, and it was a gift. They are wild about cars, and so it suited

SheSnapsThenSheFarts · 30/11/2018 21:24

I had one for my 21st as I wanted a gift that I couldn't lose or break (all my friends had jewellery which I'd lose. Or break. Guaranteed). I still love it even though I haven't used it for years as I have a company car now.

badlydrawnperson · 30/11/2018 21:24

Oh yawn. It’s no tax to anyone with half a brain cell.
Whereas to people with an actual full brain it's N9 TAX

IStandWithPosie · 30/11/2018 21:27

No just people being deliberately obtuse.

badlydrawnperson · 30/11/2018 21:28

Valuations are a bit vague - dealers will offer inflated "valuations" to encourage you to list your plate with them, very few will stump up the "valuation" in immediate cash.

The ones bought from DVLA and then offered for huge sums (often for months and years without selling) by chancers who are desperately trying to make them read something that they really don't are the funniest.

badlydrawnperson · 30/11/2018 21:30

w9 dn8't stic8 rando8 number2 in sentence5 though.

N9 TAX is NOT the same as NO TAX

IStandWithPosie · 30/11/2018 21:32

😂

Oh I’ll bet you’re a right barrel of laughs IRL.

BarbaraRoyale · 30/11/2018 21:32

I have one . It's connected to the car rather than me though . I've been stopped and offered money for it but I'm keeping it
I don't see the problem with having one

JadziaSnax · 30/11/2018 21:36

Mine isn't a personalised plate but it does have my initials on it. When I saw the car, I took it as a sign that I should buy it Grin

amilosingitor · 30/11/2018 21:47

My DP is a lover of personalised plates. He had his daughters name on his car when I met him and as soon as we named our son he bought another plate with his name on[santa]all of our plates are technically illegal, digits spaced out wrong so it first name - space - initial of surname and some of them are black which is only allowed on cars of a certain age which ours aren't. It pisses me off but never mind!

He just likes them. There are certain occasions where he would put a personalised plate on a car to hide its age.
