Theresa May - TV debate- waste of time

Theworldisfullofgs · 29/11/2018 11:47

AIBU in thinking this will be a waste of time. Currently both main political parties still arguing about their version of brexit. So all just semantics anyway
And
Most importantly Theresa May NEVER answers a direct question and is always specifically unspecified. So actually what's the point?

She's not a natural orator, like Blair or Cameron, so she will never come across well in debate or interviews unless fully prepared.

I don't particularly see any value in a point scoring exercise.

Ninoo25 · 29/11/2018 11:53

YANBU

Theworldisfullofgs · 29/11/2018 11:55

Point scoring didn't concern me.
It should be about informing and as May absolutely avoids giving an answer to anything, it seems to me, more than a little pointless.

DGRossetti · 29/11/2018 11:55

What on earth is the point of debating what she insists is a "done deal" ?

Onlyjoinedforthisthread · 29/11/2018 11:57

No point at all as only MPs get to vote and only 3 days later so we won't have time to listen, consider our opinions after the debate, pass on those opinions to our MP, the MP then won't have time to read our comments and consider them before they have to vote, so seems pointless to me

Onlyjoinedforthisthread · 29/11/2018 11:58

OP
what do you want informed about? The deal is already in the public domain

Theworldisfullofgs · 29/11/2018 11:58

She's going to go into wagging finger, patronising tone. And tell us nothing.

She reminds me if my mother, when she couldn't get her point across ....I'm just telling you, I know what's best for you....

OP posts:
Theworldisfullofgs · 29/11/2018 12:00

I get it's in the public domain. So even more, what's the point?

OP posts:
PlainSpeakingStraightTalking · 29/11/2018 12:00

It will be a point scoring exercise. 'ooh look, she stuttered', 'ooh she tripped up over her words' etc. Ditto for Corbyn/

I fail to see the point. She is PM. She makes a statement. That is the end of the matter.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 29/11/2018 12:06

I agree that it's pointless. She only wants to do it because she knows Corbyn tends to get ripped apart either during or after these things and she wants to make him look bad. If he actually had a plan he wouldn't be so easily ripped apart, but he doesn't.

I think they should let someone represent Remain. Nicola Sturgeon probably has the most credibility for this having been staunchly Remain from the beginning.

DogInATent · 29/11/2018 12:12

May vs. Corbyn is a waste of time, they're both coming from the same point of view and only disagree over the colour of unicorn they think they can deliver.

Is the debate going to address the right question? - if it's restricted to Deal vs. No Deal (which both May and Corbyn will be only too eager to do, see above) then does that really answer the questions the public are asking?

What's the point of a persuasive debate if there's not going to be a measure of how persuaded the public is?

Theworldisfullofgs · 29/11/2018 12:50

Absolutely. It's just window dressing

You think Corbyn does?

He will be even more vangue as at heart he is a Brexiter and has been all his political life.

Theworldisfullofgs · 29/11/2018 12:58

So even less point then.

OP posts:
knittingdad · 29/11/2018 13:00

The vote itself is almost certainly lost. The debate is then possibly either a hail Mary attempt to use public pressure on MPs or, more likely in my view, is about positioning for what happens after the vote is lost.

The debate helps to blame Corbyn for the vote going down, and subsequent no deal chaos, rather than her rebellious backbenchers. If there is to be a second referendum then deciding what the question is will be crucial - the debate may help to frame that choice favourably for the PM.

gruffalomom · 29/11/2018 13:02

Yanbu. A debate is not going to help anyone. What I would like to see if her defend her stance against questions from the general public, lawmakers and the like

Limensoda · 29/11/2018 13:06

He voted remain and said he would again if there was another vote.

dogToy · 29/11/2018 13:11

Watching a moronic Brexiteer (Corbyn) debate with a fairly intelligent Raminer (May) whilst both defending the opposite could be TV gold.

If nothing else it'll ensure Labour stay out of power for longer.

SillySallySingsSongs · 29/11/2018 13:13

Yeah right Hmm

Just putting this link here because i hadn't heard about the debate.

I agree there's not much to ''debate''. Is the aim to inform? Or to gather opinion? Will it change anything at all? I think not.

It all seems a bit odd. JC saying he wants ITV to do it because BBC'a schedule would clash with I'm A Celeb Final and he wants to watch it .... I don't know weather to Grin or Hmm

dogToy · 29/11/2018 13:20

"He voted remain and said he would again if there was another vote."

I believe this. That isn't what he wants though. He's a weak, unintelligent and uneducated excuse for a leader of the opposition with a weak shadow cabinet. He knows this and the fact he won't fuck off with DA and his other [what's the collective noun for idiots? a leftie of idiots?] shows how he is holding on, hoping the public will forget how ineffectual he is when the Brexit hits the fan.

I've seen it suggested that it was a "joke" ? Or was that Brexit ? Easily confused I guess.

Limensoda · 29/11/2018 13:28

@SillySallySingsSongs

So it's documented and he confirmed it again this morning but you know better? To quote you...'Yeah right Hmm

Limensoda · 29/11/2018 13:31

He's not a brexiteer....and if you think he's moronic and May is more intelligent.....then I would have to think you know little about either.

We are currently on an airliner called the EU.
After years of shouting at other passengers and the crew we have opened the door to jump out.
There is a deal in the form of a parachute, to give a softer landing.
No deal means no parachute.
