Car insurance CF?

Sorry probably v boring

Last year, my car insurance was a telematics policy because I was a new driver. I predicted 12000 miles per year and did not exceed that within the year. When I called to cancel I ended up renewing because they matched a quote. When I asked if they could do another telematics policy, they said it was not possible because my previous year's telematics indicated that I'm a low risk driver. I asked what would happen to the black box (installed in car not accessible) and asked if they wanted it back to which they responded that they don't remove black boxes but it will be disabled and won't record any more information - this was in August.

I've just had an email saying that I'm predicted to exceed my mileage and they're slapping a £90 charge on plus admin fees. I logged onto my dashboard and the black box is still recording data for the current year despite being explicitly told that they WOULD NOT provide a telematics policy for me. Due to work placement rotations changing every few months, I'm driving a lot more now than I will be in the summer so I won't exceed 12000 miles overall. The charge will probably be refunded (minus admin fees ffs) if this is the case but I can't afford to wait until the end of the year - insurance is already so expensive and I can't afford the extra. Do I have a leg to stand on re being lied to on the phone? I have no evidence of this but feel like I've been cheated out of money

What can I do? Will I just have to find the money and suck it up? TIA

They should record their calls. Ring up and calmly and politely asked to lodge a formal complaint with their complaints department or a manager.

How abd when are they planning on taking the money? If it's direct debit, you can ask your bank to reverse it, while you go through complaints procedure. But be sure to check each day on ownvehicle.askmid.com/ to ensure they don't cancel your policy.

If you get no joy with them, complain to the ombudsman. www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/advice/how-to-complain-about-your-insurance-provider

Also do you have any emails with the confirmation for telematics ending. Or if you compare your last policy doc with current one, is telematics mentioned on either of them?

i work in car insurance, ring and ask to speak to their manager, have the call listened too and make a complaint

Check your policy documents in the first instance and then if no mention of the black box I'd raise a complaint. Also how can the charge you for exceeding the mileage if by the end of the year you actually won't exceed the mileage?

Thank you all, I've called them and they said they'll listen to the call and if I've been misinformed then they'll remove the charge. Thanks again!
