Just that.

Amount spent on children, other family, any friends you buy for, any friends’ children, godchildren, teachers/TAs etc, other gifts such as one for the particularly helpful postman etc.

I’ve saved up over the year but the money just seems to have frittered away, despite trying really hard not to spend too much individually. Agh!

Christmas is horrendous. It all seems such a waste ( time, money, stress).

yoyo1234 · 27/11/2018 18:30

I do try to keep it down but it all adds up. Circa ÂŁ800 for the festive period ( presents, food, alcohol, travel etc).

yoyo1234 · 27/11/2018 18:32

ÂŁ20ish for children other than my own. ÂŁ100ish on my own dc

RedPandaMama · 27/11/2018 18:36

Last year was our first year as a family and it was MAD! Before that DP and I just did our own thing with families (both students) whereas last year we spend 4 days down south with DPs family then 5 days with mine up north.

Presents spent about ÂŁ40-50 per couple (my parents, his parents, my nan and grandad, his mum and dad, his sister and BIL, my auntie and uncle), random gifts for other relatives (aunties and uncles, granny, niece, nephew, my sister) ranging from ÂŁ5 to ÂŁ30. Plus petrol driving up and down. Then about ÂŁ100 on each other. Nothing really for DD as she was only 4 months old and got tonnes as it was, just clothes and things she needed for her room.

All in probably spent around ÂŁ500. Aiming for way less this year, probably more like ÂŁ200 all together. We aren't travelling and have just bought a house so should be easier.

BuffaloCauliflower · 27/11/2018 18:36

Maximum £25 per person this year, which comes to about £500 all in. But we don’t have our own children yet, we’re trying to spend less than that, and my family have all agreed to be frugal as we care about the food and being together more than the presents. It all seems a lot. I’ve spent a lot more I couldn’t afford in previous years, I don’t want to buy things for the hell of it

LagunaBubbles · 27/11/2018 18:36

We don't have lots of family to buy for, around ÂŁ400 each on my 10 and 16 year old boys, and ÂŁ200 on my 25 year old and his girlfriend. Probably about ÂŁ50 for my Aunt and brother each. For years me and DH didn't bother with each other but last few years probably around ÂŁ100 each. And ÂŁ10 Secret Santa at my work.

Seniorschoolmum · 27/11/2018 18:37

This year will be ds, 3x dsis and one dB, probably ÂŁ200. Plus another ÂŁ150 on tree, food, cards, bits & pieces.

About ÂŁ35 for each dc (stocking and everything), ÂŁ15 family secret Santa, ÂŁ10 for nephew and ÂŁ10 for work secret Santa. That's it and that's stretching the budget to the max. So ÂŁ140

LunaLovesgood · 27/11/2018 18:41

I don't keep track Blushso far it's worked out at about ÂŁ800 and I'm about 2/3 of the way through with presents.

We do a weekend visit to se family which is the best part of ÂŁ500 after we've paid for flights etc. Then the parties and days out start creeping in and add a small fortune on.

I really don't like to think about it in terms of how much we've spent to be honest. But we can afford it and would happily cut down if we couldn't for any reason and I'm just a massive child and get very excited

Blacktoffeecat · 27/11/2018 18:41

DS £200, DH £250, parents £45 ish each, DSIL and her partner £30, my auntie and her partner £30, DS godmother £40, teachers £10x2, friends’ children x15- between £10 and £3 each (got a lot of activity books in book people Grin)
So a fortune basically. Need to reduce it next year!

EmeraldShamrock · 27/11/2018 18:41

To much, more than we can afford but the list keeps growing. I started in September approx 250 per month. I have the DC my parents and ilaws. I still need Dneices and nephews, teachers, siblings chris kindle plus all food shopping. It is a pain.
Easily 1000.00 when I am done Shock

dancingdirty · 27/11/2018 18:43

Am under budget atm and nearly finished

Blacktoffeecat · 27/11/2018 18:44

Update £700 ish and I am all done. Don’t know how much DH has spent on me though.

SugarNyx · 27/11/2018 18:45

£20 per person for sisters, parents, grandparents on my side (we’re not close) £50 each for dh parents, £200 for dh, £150 ds who’s 1

Buttercupsandaisies · 27/11/2018 18:47

ÂŁ75 each parent
ÂŁ20 each dn/nephew
ÂŁ500 each dc

ViennaWaits4You · 27/11/2018 18:47

I’ve spent around £600 so far, not much left to get. No kids, but large extended family that I spend lots of time with.

OutPinked · 27/11/2018 18:48

I have four DC and always aim to spend the same on each of them. Youngest is only four weeks old though so I obviously haven’t spent quite as much on him as he won’t have a bloody clue what is going on. I’ve almost finished buying now and I’d say I’ve spent £100 on the baby and £200 on each of the children so £700ish in total.

I only buy limited relatives presents and I wouldn’t say I spend more than £50 all in all. Spend similar on DP. Don’t generally buy for friends, we’ve never really done it. Definitely never bought the postie anything...

huggybear · 27/11/2018 18:50

ÂŁ500 for husband, ÂŁ40 for all other family members.

Shesellsseashellsontheseashore · 27/11/2018 18:50

No actual budget on my own children as I buy throughout the year using sales and discount codes etc so I do save a lot on items. Friends children usually between 10-15 but items usually have a higher rrp as I've bought when I see them with good reductions- playmobil bargains this year. ÂŁ15 per nephew and niece and my siblings. 7 teachers - spent ÂŁ15 altogether including giftbags and tisssue paper. Again I've got deals.

yoyo1234 · 27/11/2018 18:51

Imagine how nice a Christmas without the presents would be Grin.

Taffeta · 27/11/2018 18:52

I spend on presents:

DM & MIL - about ÂŁ40 each
Nephews and nieces (age 3-20) about ÂŁ30 each
DS & DD - about ÂŁ200 each inc all stocking stuff
DH - about ÂŁ40
Friends and some of their kids (about 15) ÂŁ10-25 each
Music teachers, sports coaches - about ÂŁ10 each
Guide leader - about ÂŁ20
Bin men - ÂŁ10
Used to give to postman but stopped as got the feeling he was offended Confused

Lord knows what I spend on food and drink [hangs head in shame]

Lazybonita · 27/11/2018 18:53

Honestly, all in about £300-£400 on each DS, about £200 on DH. £80-£100 on DM and DF each. £50ish on MIL and SIL. £50 on GGP. We will probably spend about £2000/£2,500 all in, including all presents, food, booze, theatre trips, days out etc. It’s a lot, I know, but we can comfortably afford it and when we couldn’t we did it for much less.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 27/11/2018 18:57

Each year it’s different. Adults in DHs side of the family do secret santa for the adults. We each have 1 adult to buy for and a £25 budget (so £50) then our 3 nephews and it’s usually £20- £25 each on them.

My side of the family we just buy each other’s kids and not the adults so £20-25 on my 2 nieces.

I buy mum and step dad something each - again around the ÂŁ20 mark, and stepdads parents the same again.

DDs budget varies year on year. I try to keep it under £200 but we sometimes go over - especially if I pick stuff up throughout the year. In our house Santa doesn’t bring big ticket items as he has too many children to make presents for - one medium toy or 2 smaller toys from Santa and he fills them stocking. Big ticket items are from mum and dad so she knows some years we can afford more than others.

All in all we try to keep spends around the £500 mark but occasionally it’s more - never less. We buy each other stuff from what ever is left over in the budget and sometimes that’s a small thing like slippers and other years it’s a bit more.

We tend not to go OTT with food and drinks. So don’t spend a whole lot more - we never host though as our place is too small. Alcohol is bought ad hoc - DH gets some beers in and I might have some wine. We do buy a bottle of baileys for Hogmanay as I like a little glass to see in the bells and maybe also have a couple of glasses on Christmas Eve with DH.

mamagrinandbearit · 27/11/2018 18:59

Pre baby my partner and I spent about ÂŁ300 on each other and I spent about ÂŁ400 total on my family and friends. He spent about ÂŁ60 on his parents (no other family) so as a family we spent over ÂŁ1000 on presents alone which makes me feel a bit sick!!

Now on maternity leave so have set a limit of ÂŁ50 on each other and I have budgeted ÂŁ150 to cover small gifts for my friends and family and a separate ÂŁ50 for theatre tickets for my mum who has been so amazing and supportive this year. I have decided not to buy for my extended family and only buying for kids not grown ups other than my parents and siblings this year. So cut down to ÂŁ400 as a family.
