Just that.

Amount spent on children, other family, any friends you buy for, any friends’ children, godchildren, teachers/TAs etc, other gifts such as one for the particularly helpful postman etc.

I’ve saved up over the year but the money just seems to have frittered away, despite trying really hard not to spend too much individually. Agh!

I've asked for vouchers or cash for the dc's birthdays which are during the festive season. I'm mindful of the plastic mountain they have which they don't play with. Experience gifts are the way to reduce the waste. Mine love going to the theatre to watch a panto or a film at the cinema. I've bought us a family gift of NT membership so we can have 'free days out'' throughout the year.

We buy family gifts like food hampers or board games rather than individual presents. It makes it more affordable and I keep an eye on discounts and offers during the year.

weloveheyduggee · 27/11/2018 20:09

Haha we're so much less than everyone else! We wouldn't afford to eat or pay our bills if we spent that much, the people we spend the most on is our DS and my DSis whose a teenager (£20-£30 each.) £20 budget ish on each other, then £5-£10 each on other relatives. I make chutney as a gift for loads of people and small gifts for close relatives normally from the charity shop! Christmas is about spending time together (and for also the Christian celebration!) I think it's lovely if you can afford to spoil your loved ones but really feel for those who can't but feel under pressure by society.

surferjet · 27/11/2018 20:10

I spend about £1500, maybe a bit more.

isseywithcats · 27/11/2018 20:14

8 x £10 each for grandchildren
OH £60
My Children 3x£15
Workmates 3 x £10
SIL & BIL £40
Staff at the charity shop i work at 2nd job £5 tin of choccies
Son in Law £10
thats it i dont buy my siblings. neices or nephews too many of them and they dont buy for us

weloveheyduggee · 27/11/2018 20:14

Meant to say for me the Christian celebration I know that doesn't matter for most people these days

yoyo1234 · 27/11/2018 20:30

I love the idea of experience gifts. May think about that next year. It will save so much time and stress trying to find space for everything. Genuinely how do those spending £200+ each year per child find the space for it all ( I know on Mumsnet the average house is probably lots bigger than normal). I love the social side of Christmas and seeing relatives it is the "stuff" that annoys and can disgust me.

RedDeadRoach · 27/11/2018 20:34

About £25 per child at the rate we are going. Dsc is used to having a lot more spent on him by us but we are trying to claw our way out of £15k debt so we have warned him we can't afford to get him much this year. Last year we added to our debt trying to keep up and it's not happening this year. We can't compete with his mum anyway - last year she spent £600 on him. We are also thinking a couple of things to unwrap and then experiences (which we can then pay for using January's payday) no presents for any extended family as we have all agreed this year no presents or token presents only.

BeardedMum · 27/11/2018 20:37

I just hate christmas. My children have bo wishes but want me to buy them great surprises. Just so stressful I would like to sleep and wake on the 1st of Jan!

GunpowderGelatine · 27/11/2018 20:46

Chutney sounds like a lovely gift, I'd so rather that than crappy "smellies" from B&M bargains I seem to get saddled with

Justanotheruser01 · 27/11/2018 20:52

I have no dc - 7 children I buy for and there getting £15 worth (or a few pounds extra if needed certainly not going mad though) mum and dad around £20 each so £80 total 2 pressies for friends we always exchange £20 each. 1 aunt and uncle we buy for £15 3 other gifts from our home to yours for family £10 ish each for a bottle or a box of chocs from Thornton and our amazing neighbours about £10. Used to spend so much more and no gratitude so screw them ill have a mini break in December instead!

HunterHearstHelmsley · 27/11/2018 20:53

Around £750 in total. I think that's excessive to be honest. Everyone gets a treat.

Justanotheruser01 · 27/11/2018 20:53

Oh and dh is a open topic at the minute could be a couple of hundred could be £50 he's impossible to buy for!

Bambamber · 27/11/2018 20:58

Tenner each for my nephews. Couple of quid each for my parents and parents in law. Couple of quid for my brother an sister. For my husband's grandparents the family chip in to do hampers. For our daughter we don't really have a budget, just pick up things throughout the year while in the sale. This year we've probably spent about 150.

We're not hard up but some of our family are. So we have an agreement that the adults don't really get anything, and we get each other's kids either a small gift that they've asked for, or money towards a gift. That way no one feels pressure to spend more than they can afford and there's no competition as to who gets a better present

HippoLatte · 27/11/2018 21:05

About £300/350 on each of our 3 children. £20/30 each on 4 Godchildren, £15 each for niece and nephew. £20/25 on parents, £100 on DP and £20 on my friend.

What I hate most about Christmas is the tradition here that new clothes, shoes and coats must be bought also. And another new outfit for boxing day too. I buy them new clothes constantly throughout the year but Xmas always seems a lot smarter so they end up with shirt/chinos and DD a party dress which never gets worn again. My Mum isn't keeping well so I don't think she has many xmas's left so I will do the dressing up the kids thing for her as she loves the steady stream on grandkids in their finest on xmas day. But the kids would rather a new tracksuit (DD does love her party dresses though).

weloveheyduggee · 27/11/2018 21:09

Gunpowder- it's become a tradition and my family look forward to seeing what flavour chutney it will be this year! I make big batches and save up jars throughout the year so can go to odd friends/ DH family etc so it works really well. It's lovely on Boxing Day with cold meat and cheese and lasts for ages. Definitely worth doing!

yoyo1234 · 27/11/2018 21:34

Ohh can you post some recipes for the chutneys that is a lovely idea .

ZanyMobster · 27/11/2018 21:34

About £1k on presents and about £200 on food/drink. It's crazy really but I do put money away every month so the cash is always there ready. I do find that xmas parties etc seem to be ridiculously pricey, the one we are going to this year will cost about £250 and I always forget to budget for that.

LilLido · 27/11/2018 21:49

For DD, parents, grandparents, sister, brother 5 nieces & nephew = £300/£400. I have dramatically cut down this year on who I bought for as I didn't get so much as a thanks from half the family last year.

cheshireagain · 27/11/2018 21:52

£1k on DH
£150 on mum
£20/50 on everyone else

pumpkinpie01 · 27/11/2018 21:54

Every year I say I will cut down but never seem to be able to do it for less than £800

GunpowderGelatine · 27/11/2018 22:10

@weloveheyduggee sounds lush! Interestingly it's what Kate Middleton does for the Queen at Christmas. She must have nicked the idea from you Wink

madeyemoodysmum · 27/11/2018 22:17

Dh 150-200
Kids £150 x2
Nephews £60
Friends £30 all in
Db. £10
Mum £40
Dad £25. Never wants anything
Food about £100 £150 we don't go crazy just a bit extra- the booze we already have in mostly
So about £800 I guess

sophisticatedsarcasm · 27/11/2018 22:24

How much I spend on the kids seems to change from year to year depending on what it is they want. Rough,y £200, I have 2 dc.
Usually DP I spend £100, my brother who’s after me around £20 and £20 for his girlfriend and then buy them something together for £20. My next sister usually gets £40. Long story as too why. My mum always £50 because she does so much for us, and she complains about that saying it’s too much but she never takes any other money off of us so I over compensate at Christmas and birthdays. Then my 3 little brothers a sisters (same dad; different Mum) get £15 each and my dad, step Mum and step brother get £10 each.

CoachBombay · 27/11/2018 22:36

Wow some of you have big budgets! I'm slightly envious haha!

For us it's simple
DH/Me £50
DS age 4 £100
Secret Santa for either DGM/DM/DB/SIL £30
Nephew £20
Niece £20

So about £220ish on gifts and then £100 on food and drink.

£320 Christmas.

We probably could afford a little more, but I don't see why really. It's one day and it really is all about the celebration and spending time together than spending for us as a family. We love decorating the house, cooking biscuits and cakes and a lovely Christmas dinner together. The toys end up at the bottom of the toy box by February generally and something new is the craze by May 😂

Purpletigers · 27/11/2018 22:55

Approx £200 on each child . £100 towards my parents present ( joint present with my siblings) . £20 / 25 ish on best friend and sister .
Husband buys his parents . We don’t always buy for each other .
Then gifts for cubs leaders and anyone else who volunteers in a club my children attend .
