To ask which job to go for

Not really aibu, but posting here for more traffic.

Jobs are like buses, nothing for years then two come along at once!

First job offer is in a call centre 9-2 weekdays. But working school hols and may be difficult trying to get leave during hols if loads of people fighting for that time off. But it set days and hours and I know what money is coming in and no childcare issue, apart from hols.

Second job offer is in a college as a learning support worker but it’s a zero hours contact so may not be regular hours and money. But it will offer me career progression and all hols off, but obviously not paid!

It’s not a case if I’m desperate for money because I’m getting a good divorce settlement but obviously I will still have bills to pay.

Which would you choose?

The first one - college funding is sporadic at best and you will never become a permanent member of staff on that contact.

FoxFoxSierra · 25/11/2018 12:28

I would go with the second one if you know you will be good at it and really push yourself to go the extra mile and get a good reputation for yourself, that way you will have a good chance of getting a better contract when they are available

Second job, will probably be much more rewarding and you get the holidays off.

Working in a call centre can be soul destroying, most people leave within weeks or months, there may possibly be exceptions.

I worked in a call centre which was supposed to be customer care, it sounded interesting, if I was allowed to actually “care for customers”
instead it was basically logging calls and not much more.

Cold calling call centres are supposed to be even worse.

chronic the college get the funding from students that have an EHCP plan, and my job would be to support those students

Second job as you're not desperate for the money, less issues with child care

ilovesooty · 25/11/2018 12:38

The second one. Call centre work will always be there.

If you don’t need to earn a set amount of money urgently then I’d take the second one and see how many hours you get. Then use it as a platform to look for something with guaranteed hours ASAP.
