Reading some of the Christmas threads, it seems there are so many people who are spending hundreds or thousands of pounds on Christmas presents, often spending money they don’t have or can ill afford.

This is madness. Buy only for the immediate family. Don’t buy lots. Don’t buy things just for the sake of buying.

I read the OPs post “hundreds or thousands as hundreds of thousands”. Was wondering who was dropping two hundred grand on some presents and turkey.

The best advice is to spend what you can afford. Never get into debt for the sake of one day, it is so stupid. If you can afford to spend thousands and you actually want to then go for it but if you can’t, don’t put yourself through the debt- it’s pointless.

I'm with OP.
The more pressure there is to buy 'stuff' the more I don't want any, I find.

I considered buying people a goat for an African village or sponsoring a snow leopard. Is that a shit gift?

Yes if you accept a gift from them.

If you want to do that then ask people who would otherwise give you a present to buy a goat for a village.

If you know the "recipient" would be fine with it, then it's all good.

I've asked for charity donations for Christmas and only one person said yes of course if that's what you'd like. Because she has been in my shoes and gets where I'm coming from. Everyone else is obsessed with Having Things.Sad

Infuriating isn't it? My family all do goats and it's great. DH's family refuse to accept that's what I want and I have to make something up. Sometimes I come up with something DH wants so I can just give it to him after they've given it to me.

This thread inspired me to buy another set of Xmas bedding and another Xmas jumper to go with a different pair of shoes I have.
