To encourage you all to buy less this Christmas?

Reading some of the Christmas threads, it seems there are so many people who are spending hundreds or thousands of pounds on Christmas presents, often spending money they don’t have or can ill afford.

This is madness. Buy only for the immediate family. Don’t buy lots. Don’t buy things just for the sake of buying.

Anyone else slightly disturbed by arranfan's in depth goat knowledge? Shock Grin

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 24/11/2018 23:37

I just wish there wasn't so much that we import from China, I have a real problem with that. Not what other people like to buy, not my business, but I'm struggling to find things not 'Made in China'.

I've even given up with Boden. Everything was 'Made in the UK', brilliant - then 'Made in Czechoslavakia', great - then 'Made in Vietnam', and then 'Made in China'. Still the same high cost product (whether you like them or not) but I hate the idea of supporting sweat shops. Angry

YABVU. You have no right to encourage people on what to do with their own money. It’s absolutely none of your business and your holier-than-thou attitude is extremely unwelcome.

QueenDramaLlama · 24/11/2018 23:46

Yep, encouraging people not to get into unnecessary debt is awful.
Roll on the debt I say.

In all seriousness I agree with you OP. Christmas should be about time well spent with loved ones, not working round the clock and getting into debt to buy 'things'.

Of course if it's well within budget that's a different story.

Anyone else slightly disturbed by arranfan's in depth goat knowledge?

I used to live somewhere where the landowners managed to get permission to re-route the public paths and kept various rare breeds to qualify for a number of subsidies.

Let's just say, the landowners were attempting to deter people from using the paths at all and kept some goats tethered adjacent to the paths and some were better-tempered than others. One landowner also kept a military tank near to the public right of way. Not in the least initimidating.

WorraLiberty · 24/11/2018 23:58

OMG arranfan Shock Shock

Passmeagin · 24/11/2018 23:59

Yabu. I work my socks off and save all year. I will enjoy my lavish Christmas. I think me and my dcs deserve it. Mind your own business people are entitled to spend as they please

dontalltalkatonce · 25/11/2018 00:00

I beg to differ! Christmas is about eating and drinking too much, watching loads of crap on Netflix and stuff, loads and loads of stuff!

AamdC · 25/11/2018 00:05

I.buy for my children and my parents and give dsd money and my nephews (much less) money i dont buy for hordes of people but if people wish too thats entirely up to themHmm

WinterfellWench · 25/11/2018 01:12

OK I will do as the OP tells me. I am only going to buy 10 six-packs of mince pies instead of 11 like I did last year.

There ya go, I am buying less this Christmas. That OK with you @notcontent ???

corythatwas · 25/11/2018 01:17

Buy only for the immediate family.

Why is it more virtuous to spend on your husband or children than on, say, a niece or nephew who may need a little help to get kitted out?

ilovesooty · 25/11/2018 01:27

Well this thread was never going to go down well. I imagine though that in general a lot of food waste happens at Christmas and a lot of stuff ends up in landfill.

MyfanwyMontez · 25/11/2018 01:33

I’m not buying anything , except for my children. And that won’t be much. My nieces and nephews will not get a lot either.
I haven’t got the money.
If you can afford to be lavish , then crack on!

7Days · 25/11/2018 01:34

This year I've become more concerned about the environment.
So while I'm not going to spend less i am making the effort to spend better.
Better in some way, from a local producer, or has an inherent long l ife, or contains no palm oil or something like that. can't do it all but can do a bit.

BadLad · 25/11/2018 01:35

The threads telling people what to do are coming thick and fast this month.

AllesAusLiebe · 25/11/2018 01:41

OP, I suspect that you’re not entirely genuine, but for what it’s worth, I intend on doing what I do every year and spending very little this Christmas. I hate consumerism and buy one gift per person. Last year I bought my parents a weekend away so they could spend time together. I found that a much more valuable use of my money.

MissLadyM · 25/11/2018 01:56

What's it got to do with you? What a bore!

MrsGollach · 25/11/2018 01:57

OK I win. I don't buy any xmas presents. Haven't for years. We go on holiday at that time to escape the mad consumerism that encompasses the UK and leave the sheep on their own. I recommend it.

13thWarriorWitch · 25/11/2018 02:26

Are you always this officious?

frogface69 · 25/11/2018 02:34

My friends have decided that we are giving to charity this year, because they say they all get too much, too commercial etc.
Which in effect means I will get bugger all to open at Christmas.
Ha ruddy ha.

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 25/11/2018 02:35

frog in that case buy yourself something lovely.

Lovingbenidorm · 25/11/2018 02:43

Op I read your post with interest.
I intend to buy SHIT LOADS!! Merry Christmas!

frogface69 · 25/11/2018 02:45

Can't, I will, but it's not the same. I also take umbrage at being told that I haven't to buy anything either. I mean, only a bottle of wine or something.
Secretly upset, me.

Monty27 · 25/11/2018 02:50

Really? What threads? Anyway let it be.
Happy Christmas 🙄

LilMy33 · 25/11/2018 05:48

Weird time to give this instruction OP. 11pm on Saturday night after Black Friday has kicked off. I think you might be a bit late.
