The ‘naice’ supermarket in my local town has started stocking lots of veggie/vegan items. A few of the vegan dishes contain jackfruit.

I’m very tempted to buy just to try it out. I’ve googled and apparently it tastes like pulled pork? I’m neither a vegetarian or vegan although I only eat white meat and fish. I’ve never tried this item and I’m bloody curious.

Can anyone confirm what this fruit tastes like within the confines of a savoury dish?

It really doesn't taste like pulled pork it justvlookd like it. I made some myself and didn't like it but maybe if I'd been veggie for years and had forgotten what meat tastes like i would have liked it more. Texture is a bit like less juicy pineapple but the fruit itself has little flavour so mainly you taste the sauce. One of the ones they sell in the supermarket may be better than my concoction though!

I live In Thailand so eat jackfruit a lot.

It doesn’t taste like pork, but the texture is similar to meat.

It is delicious it tastes like a mix of banana, mango, and pineapple. It reminds me of the taste of fruit salad sweets.

It’s not used much here in other dishes, just cut open and eaten. Or battered then fried. I don’t like it cooked because of the texture.

The seeds can also be eaten.

Give it a try :)

It tastes bland but robustly textured like pulled pork. It tastes of the flavouring that’s in it - which can be very nice if done well.

I've had pulled pork jackfruit, it's really nice. Doesn't exactly taste of pork, but really nice in its own way!

Definitely doesn't taste like pork, no.

Unripe, green jackfruit is mild, quite juicy and has a firm texture very similar to some cooked meats, and will 'pull' in the way pork will, into defined pieces.

It takes on the flavour of whatever you cook it with and makes a good meat substitute.

Do not confuse this with RIPE jackfruit which is sweet and as a PP says, a bit fruitsalady.

I like both but green jackfruit as a savoury is really good, and I have major issues with textures but find this good!

I've had a jackfruit burger in a gastro pub and it tasted like a meat flavoured veggie burger. Nice but I don't think it would fool anyone. Are there any places near you that serve it? I'd try it before cooking it.

It doesn't really taste like pork but is similar, texture wise. I buy a jackfruit Thai curry from my local store which is lovely.

The seeds are a bit like chestnuts when cooked. Quite a faff to prepare às need drying first.

Thanks for responding to my late night/early morning musings Grin

I’ll give it a try. Seems to be appearing in lots of dishes on the shelf. I don’t even know what it looks like in its pre cooked glory so I shall google (before someone tells me to).
