Hygiene AIBU?

Hanspannerly · 23/11/2018 23:06

Cleaning up the kitchen tonight and dropped a tiny spot of banana on the floor. Had the dish sponge in my hand so bent and wiped it up. Sponge went straight into the sink with very hot water and washing up liquid. DH is appalled by my hygiene practices!! I don’t make a habit of wiping the floor unless with a mop but I steam cleaned the floor this morning so... AIBU?

Absolutely nothing wrong with what you did OP. Can’t be doing with the clean freaks! A few germs or a bit of dirt is just fine and helps to build a good immune system.

TAMS71 · 24/11/2018 08:56

Eugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PiperPublickOccurrences · 24/11/2018 08:56

This thread is cracking me up. I can't believe people are really this uptight.

I can. Same people who get through several bottles of bleach a day and watch "cleaning stars" on Instagram.

Get a bloody life.

Bluesheep8 · 24/11/2018 08:57

Can't see an issue tbh, I'd do the same if there wasn't any kitchen roll Blush

soulrider · 24/11/2018 09:01

Given that I put knives that have been cutting up raw meat in the hot soapy water in the washing up bowl I doubt that anything picked up on the sponge from the floor is the thing i would be worrying about.

wishywashy6 · 24/11/2018 09:03

My 5 year old would have probably licked it up 😬

Topseyt · 24/11/2018 09:07

I'm about to go and put on a load of washing where towels, tea towels and underwear will be washed in with everything else at 40°.

I have always been a slattern. We are all still here.

Pud2 · 24/11/2018 09:12

Love it Wishywashy! And your 5 year old would’ve been just fine if they had licked it up.

ADastardlyThing · 24/11/2018 09:13

This threads like crack! More, more outrage please Grin

I've done this. I also use the same sponges to wash the dog bowls

Poppyinagreenfield · 24/11/2018 09:13

Dirt is good for us despite the fact that the tv adverts tell us otherwise to sell their product. Our bodies are cities to millions of inhabitants many of whom are vital to our survival. A lot of this action takes place in the gut which acts as a part of the immune system.

However. DH is correct. The washing up cloth is harbour to a lot of bad stuff. It is good practice not to use it as a floor cloth. You could be inadvertently mopping up dog, cat or bird faeces introduced from the garden. Best to keep it separate.

morningconstitutional2017 · 24/11/2018 09:14

I assume as you put the sponge in hot water you will all be okay. Personally, I'd probably have used a floor-cloth instead but as you haven't died yet it's all right this once, surely?

In future though either DH to deal with spillages or perhaps be more conscientious if he's witnessing your housekeeping. If he hadn't seen it he wouldn't know, would he?

And nobody died.

Ollivander84 · 24/11/2018 09:15

I'm immunosuppressed, pretty severely. I would do that. I wash tea towels with everything else, have washed my hair in the kitchen sink, I don't use a fresh sponge ever day and I never wash fruit and veg unless it's obvious gritty
Never ever had food poisoning or upset stomach apart from norovirus in 2002

kimmy3001 · 24/11/2018 09:19

Some crazy ppl on her 😂

I have 3 DC under the age of 8 so I always keep a packet of anti bac wipes next to the sink for floor spillages or milk spillages on the kitchen side because otherwise the dish cloth would stink.

Other than that I think YANBU

Nolagerformethanks · 24/11/2018 09:25

Eeeh god I can't believe people are so outraged by this! The sponge was put immediately into hot soapy water! How you people eat out in restaurants/cafes I don't know 😆

Jojobythesea · 24/11/2018 09:26

@Celebelly GrinGrinGrinGrin

wishywashy6 · 24/11/2018 09:29

@Pud2 well yes.... he's eaten from far worse places than the kitchen floor 😂

justforareply · 24/11/2018 09:30

I had to read OP twice in case I'd missed something
Total non-issue

Jojobythesea · 24/11/2018 09:30

@Girlicorne thinking exactly the same. Unreal and frightening really.

Jojobythesea · 24/11/2018 09:34

I don't use fabric conditioner but I do use this instead and even though everything always did come out clean from the washing machine (weird I know) it now has no residual bacteria. So no pant germs on my wash cloths hurrah 😃

Hygiene AIBU?
Frlrlrubert · 24/11/2018 09:41

I wouldnt, but that's because my kitchen floor is actually dirty unless I've just mopped, not because of germs.

We're shoes on, dog owning household, so the floor is grim.

If I had no dogs we'd be shoes-off and I wouldn't think twice, it's going back in hot water, the germs will die. Plus, floor germs much less dangerous than raw chicken germs and people wash those with the dish sponge.

People who wash things separately - I don't get it, they're getting washed, they all come out clean, why does it matter? I wash dish cloths with baby clothes and put dog bowl in the same washing machine cycle as the people plates. I know people who have a 'cat food fork', ffs, just wash the fork, it isn't forever contaminated.

EdisonLightBulb · 24/11/2018 09:47

I would do this but I never wash up, everything goes in the dishwasher absolutely everything.

I also have a washing up brush and not a sponge but 🤷‍♀️I think he's overreacting, would he insist on throwing away his fillet steak if he accidentally dropped it on the floor? I doubt it.

Some people are ridiculous.

howabout · 24/11/2018 09:48

On the question of washing up brushes I don't think they are as bad as sponges. This is because with sponges they grab onto the dirt but with brushes the reverse is the case.

Making sure cleaning utensils dry out properly is also important for inhibiting bacterial growth and this is almost impossible with sponges in regular use.

wishywashy6 · 24/11/2018 09:50

@Frlrlrubert we have a dog food fork (it came free with some dog food once, don't judge)

The 5 year old uses it for his cereal mainly 🤷🏼‍♀️😬😂

hiddeneverythin · 24/11/2018 10:44

Massive eye roll. Do some of you people never sit down?!

howabout · 24/11/2018 10:46

Not if someone's cleaned my chair with the floor cloth Grin
