Hygiene AIBU?

Hanspannerly · 23/11/2018 23:06

Cleaning up the kitchen tonight and dropped a tiny spot of banana on the floor. Had the dish sponge in my hand so bent and wiped it up. Sponge went straight into the sink with very hot water and washing up liquid. DH is appalled by my hygiene practices!! I don’t make a habit of wiping the floor unless with a mop but I steam cleaned the floor this morning so... AIBU?

I’d do that, and I’m an emetophobe. I think i’m Pretty hygienic, so others’ views are interesting! I think it’s fine.

rubyslipper1 · 23/11/2018 23:43

Let me guess you also wash your dish cloth in with your underpants and smelly socks.
Hate dirty habits especially when people let dogs lick of plates , washing ashtrays in dishbasin or wishwasher, wash their hands in kitchen , dont use bleach on dish cloths ohh the list goes on .....

Hideandgo · 23/11/2018 23:45

God no. Don’t mind the weirdos. Just get on with your life whatever way suits.

Hanspannerly · 23/11/2018 23:46

You don’t wash your hands in the kitchen?!!!

Meh, just chuck the sponge away if he's that bothered. In an ideal world I like to keep a sponge for washing up and a cloth for wiping the sides down. I also like to wring the water out of the washing up bowl and leave it on the side rather than in a bowl full of mucky washing up water. However I live and work with people who just use the one sponge for cleaning and washing up and leave it floating in the sink after they're done. So far noone died!

ILoveTreesInAutumn · 23/11/2018 23:47

I’m with your DH.

I wouldn’t use anything for dishes after it had been in the floor. It’s grim.

But I don’t use sponges either, equally grim.

However, I’ve read FAR worse on MN, FAR worse 🤮

Topseyt · 23/11/2018 23:48

I use the dog if food drops on the floor. He is happy to oblige and he is a very efficient cleaner.

I give a quick damp mop after he has finished.

Hanspannerly · 23/11/2018 23:49

Can I ask as an aside, what people use if not sponges? How do you scrub a baking tin for example?

@rubyslipper1

You realise the point of putting a dish cloth, knickers and socks into a washing machine is to clean them.........?

And Eh?? to not washing your hands in the kitchen....? Have you not heard of the wonderful invention that is hand soap? Works really well under any tap....It's a wonder...a modern marvel.

thinkful · 23/11/2018 23:50

Erm, you are probably wrong in terms of hygiene but I'm sure I (and many here) will have done worse. My sister is a nurse and she allows her kids to eat food from the floor, they have pets and all. I dunno. I have probably contaminated something, even today. Don't worry about it!

Arnoldthecat · 23/11/2018 23:51

YANBU..washing up sponges are riddled with germs anyway so a bit more wont harm :)

RCohle · 23/11/2018 23:52

God, I wouldn't have thought twice about doing this.

Hideandgo · 23/11/2018 23:52

Hygiene police alert!!!

(Note to hygiene police: we’re all still here. And well. Does that tell you anything).

InglouriousBasterd · 23/11/2018 23:53

God that wouldn’t have crossed my mind as a problem...and I’m a fairly clean individual IMHO Grin

Storm4star · 23/11/2018 23:53

Unless your floor was covered in muck and pet hairs I really don’t see the issue. They are some real hygiene freaks on here! It was a tiny spot, the sponge was cleaned. The floor was cleaned that morning. Relax people!

KatharinaRosalie · 23/11/2018 23:54

Meh, it's fine. I'd do it. My floors are clean. No, I don't wear shoes indoors.

showmethegin · 23/11/2018 23:58

I can guarantee that no person on earth has ever got ill or died by a sponge touching a kitchen floor for a second then been plunged into hot soapy water and then used to clean other things. I'm 30 years old and eat about 10 portions of fresh fruit and veg a day; do I wash them, no! I'll scrub dirt off potatoes but that's it pretty much. I'm never ever ill. There is something to be said for being too germaphobe. I also shower once or twice a day before anyone accuses me of being unhygienic!

showmethegin · 24/11/2018 00:01

Also if you're even using a sponge in the first place, no matter whether it's left your pristine sink or not it's teaming with bacteria sorry to break it to you. The only way to keep them clean is to microwave them for 30 seconds after every use

Hideandgo · 24/11/2018 00:02

Could anyone actually be arsed?

Chouetted · 24/11/2018 00:04

@showmethegin Microwaving doesn't work. Your best bet is not to use a sponge at all!

rubyslipper1 · 24/11/2018 00:05

@shellstropper
so if you are changing a babys nappy youd not think it best to use bathroom sink to wash your hands. ? A kitchen sink should in my view be kept bleached and clean along with whatever cloth and sponge you use. Nothing except dishes should go in there.

And as for the washing machine imagine the germs from underwear mixing with your dishcloth , then you clean your dishes with it . Washing machines at 40 degrees dont kill germs . Google it .

TheChickenOfTruth · 24/11/2018 00:11

This thread is cracking me up. I can't believe people are really this uptight.

Celebelly · 24/11/2018 00:16

I install a new sink every time I wash something to ensure maximum hygiene.

Teenagemaw · 24/11/2018 00:16

Bonkers... totally bonkers.. OP what you did was 100% fine no one will die or even become ill from it!! Some people need to chill!

AFistfulofDolores1 · 24/11/2018 00:17

Anything so much as touches the floor and it's into the laundry.

Happy to be uptight.
