Hygiene AIBU?

Hanspannerly · 23/11/2018 23:06

Cleaning up the kitchen tonight and dropped a tiny spot of banana on the floor. Had the dish sponge in my hand so bent and wiped it up. Sponge went straight into the sink with very hot water and washing up liquid. DH is appalled by my hygiene practices!! I don’t make a habit of wiping the floor unless with a mop but I steam cleaned the floor this morning so... AIBU?

Washing knickers and tea towels together will transfer bacteria from undies to the tea towel which you then smear all over your ktchen and utensils
So many of us are regularly smearing ourselves all over our kitchen utensils...

Not a fan of loo brushes, though. New ones are fine, obviously, but I don't like pieces of dried shit, be they on a loo brush or elsewhere, and I don't think I know anyone who does like dried shit pieces around the place.

YouCannotBreakMe · 24/11/2018 01:32

Knobzombie,

Exactly! Just think, should stuff enveloping an arse really get washed with stuff enveloping food Grin

Don’t throw the washing machine out, just wash stuff separately. Grin

rubyslipper1 · 24/11/2018 01:35

@mirrivan i agree , when you see this type of thing it does make you more cautious.
Freinds Cats in kitchens jumping and licking on units and then your offered cup of tea erm no thanks

rubyslipper1 · 24/11/2018 01:36

ehh unless your washing them 60 -90 degrees and using bleach then the bacteria stays . Google it

So I Googled it and that does seem to be true, but it also seems to only be an issue if you have some sort of harmful bacteria from an infectious illness. Otherwise it's not a big deal.

OkPedro · 24/11/2018 01:53

knobzombie I proper laughed out loud at "wiping my dirty plates on my arse" fuck sake hahaha!
I do wonder if people know what a washing machine actually does?!

ragingstorm · 24/11/2018 02:04

This thread made me laugh! God forbid anyone came to my house where I have one sponge on the go at any one time and yesterday I cleaned the worktops, hob and cupboard doors, wiped something off the floor and then washed up all with the same sponge. I didn't bleach it in between nor did I soak it in steaming hot water between uses. I just wiped everything down.

I also wash my tea towels in with my clothes and my babies clothes and we are fine.

I don't have time to remember which cloth/sponge I've used for what activity. Yesterday was the first time I'd cleaned up properly in weeks.

wtf1981 · 24/11/2018 02:14

The extreme answers just made me actually laugh out loud...it's a bit of banana and a washing up sponge...shoes off indoors, right? I can't believe what people get worked up about to be honest!

Birdsgottafly · 24/11/2018 02:15

The thought would knick me sick and I've lived with dogs. I have house rabbits and cats, so I'm not Mrs Hygiene.

It doesn't matter what anyone thinks. Your DH shares the washing up sponge and has to eat off the plates in your house.

If he has Coeliac then he's had his fill of stomach issues and could do without them being added to.

LetBartletBeBartlet · 24/11/2018 02:27

I know it's straying off topic, but do people really rinse their underwear separately before putting them in with other clothes?

Am I doing washing wrong? Shock

Also, am a total slattern but wouldn't have done this with the sponge/floor/sink combo.

treaclesoda · 24/11/2018 02:27

I don't even use the dish sponge for wiping the work surfaces!
Dishes only.

Me neither. Usually on a mumsnet hygiene thread I'm one of the slatterns but on this occasion I'm one of the clean freaks.

I wash dish cloths along with towels and sheets, on a hot wash. But I'm fairly sure that it's just a psychological thing, because I think my husband tends to wash everything together and no harm has ever come to us as a result. It's very very rare that anyone in our house gets a vomiting bug.

Also use the bathroom for handwashing, not the kitchen sink, unless it's in the middle of cooking.

OkPedro · 24/11/2018 02:36

treaclesoda I wash my hands before cooking and in the kitchen sink during cooking. It would be madness to do otherwise..
letbart I've never heard anyone rinse their underwear before putting them in the washing machine #mnexclusive

kateandme · 24/11/2018 02:42

do it all the time.not dead yet.mum does it.gran does it.still alive too.shock horror.

MonsterKidz · 24/11/2018 03:03

I wouldn’t think twice about doing that. And I class myself as a clean, hygienic person.

LaurieMarlow · 24/11/2018 04:28

Loo brushes are remarkably easy to keep clean.

Everyone I know uses one and I've never seen a piece of dried poo on one in my life. However if you want to stick your hand down the bowl instead and slosh bleach everywhere, be my guest.

Let's not derail this even more batshit thread though. I've been throwing in tea towels with undies all my life and I'm never ill. I must be some kind of mutant ninja.

countrygirl99 · 24/11/2018 05:54

There's a few people who had better not come to my house. Horses saddle clothes and rugs go in the washing machine and stirrups and bits go in the dishwasher. Can't remember the last time ihad a stomach bug and currently have my first cold for 5 years. Disgustingly healthy household other than OHs diabetes.

NorthernKnickers · 24/11/2018 06:34

I'm loving the idea that my knicker juice is regularly smeared all over my crockery. 😂😂Yummy!

Jesus wept, some of you guys need counselling! Until I joined MN I never even knew there were so many germophobes out there...it's nuts! 🤦‍♀️

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 24/11/2018 06:54

It wouldn't bother me. And I wonder how many people wash their hands after using their mobile phone? Poo on mobile phones

speakout · 24/11/2018 06:56

Three second rule in our house.

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 24/11/2018 07:05

I probably wouldn't do that but honestly this thread is eye opening. I am without doubt a clean, tidy person, but according to some people here I'm living in a condemned cesspit.

Although I take people's points about not washing tea towels/normal washing together - doesn't there have to be a consideration of the environment somewhere? If I didn't combine loads I'd be letting a few dishcloths roll about the machine which seems incredibly wasteful. I already do at least a load a day and that sits heavy on my conscience.

I do think I will stop using a sponge though.

Ragwort · 24/11/2018 07:12

Wouldn’t bother me in the slightest, there are so many clean freaks on here, I am amazed you even have time to use Mumsnet, surely you are cleaning all day. I think people get over neurotic about ‘germs’, don’t we all need a certain amount of contact with germs? None of my family have ever had any bugs or sickness, all those stories about children catching every bug when they go to school, never happened to my DS (now 17).

StarfishSandwich · 24/11/2018 07:13

DS likes to do over the shoulder milky vomit. I’m pretty sure I’ve grabbed the washing up sponge to wipe up before now. We’ve not died yet.

But then I’ve also thrown items of clothing in with he nappy wash so I’m probably full of all kinds of unthinkable disease.
