DD (age 12) has been watching youtube on her ipad, but the account is linked to the family computer.
I went on there to find a DIY video this morning and Eugenia Cooney was in her suggested (she is the only one who uses this account really)

I did a bit of digging in the recently watched tab and found that DD has been watching a lot of her videos.

Obviously I don't want DD thinking this is healthy or attractive, and she has managed to watch this even with parental controls.

So AIBU to ask you to monitor what your children are watching on youtube? Have had to have a talk with DD.....

Omg I have just googled her :-(

I have a vague idea from checking histories and doing random spot checks !!!

anitagreen · 23/11/2018 21:25

She is awful and she needs to be banned from YouTube their was a campaign ages ago but no idea what happened to it, she promotes anorexia and is painfully ill. I hate to say it but I do not believe this girl will make the next few years.

Getoffthetableplease · 23/11/2018 21:33

Ah totally agree, there is SO much on YouTube that kids should not be viewing. I've just had an encounter with Supermariologan thanks to it slipping through restrictions on ds7's school friend's tablet. Scares me what they can easily stumble across on there.

JoggerBottom · 23/11/2018 21:36

Please Google 'Elsagate' if you have small children who use YouTube and YouTube kids without supervision.

JoggerBottom · 23/11/2018 21:39

Sorry, posted too soon.

Lots of nasty YouTube channels out there that target children. Think knives, needles etc. used by your favourite cartoon characters! Sad

Whereisthecoffee · 23/11/2018 21:40

My PIL’s have got my three and half year old a tablet for Christmas obviously he’ll be supervised but I’ve seen so many strange kids videos on there I’m dreading it to be honest. He used to have YouTube on the PS4 on the living room telly so I could see and hear at all times.

Davidlives · 23/11/2018 21:45

My dd is 9 and has obj recently discovered YouTube. She watches it on the tV though so I have the ‘pleasure’ of seeing exactly what she’s watching!
But v aware of how easy it must be to access horrible things.

imboredtonight · 23/11/2018 21:46

I was horrified to discover yesterday after not allowing my DS access at 6 to the Internet and deciding I was finally going to allow it and got a tablet set it up all parental controls etc

DS announced seeing me on my own tablet on YouTube that he watches a certain vlogger often at a friends. It's not the end of the world but it's a video game vlogger and the games aren't ones I would let him play

Torn between telling the mum that I don't think it's appropriate or just letting it go and being grateful she sometimes has my kid over when I haven't any childcare

HidingFromMyKids · 23/11/2018 21:51

You can put the YouTube kids app on certain age restrictions and also take the search option off. Depending on the age of your DC whether they can figure this out of course but it's not water tight so still needs watching.

HidingFromMyKids · 23/11/2018 21:53

Ohhh I just googled her Sad

Davidlives · 23/11/2018 21:55

Sorry to be dense but if you take the search function off how do you find what you want?

Rapidjohnson · 23/11/2018 21:55

Delete you tube! Why would you let a child watch unregulated content? It's not a question of if amber when they come across something unsuitable and possibly downright upsetting. Isn't there enough tv in the world to choose from which at least has some educational standard. I don't want my kids watching complete and utter crap.

stinkypoo · 23/11/2018 21:56

Not heard of them, DD only watches kids YouTube but know this isn't a failsafe. She never watches without me there & able to listen & watch though, very wary.

shakethatass · 23/11/2018 21:58

My goodness I've just checked her insta. That girl looks so ill she absolutely needs help. And her accounts suspended whilst she gets it. Kids will copy her, she is literally skin and bone. Her legs are so tiny you can see her knee caps standing out. Terrible!

Davidlives · 23/11/2018 21:58

Gosh-just Googled her. She’s so so thin Sad

Cantthinkofabloodyname · 23/11/2018 22:02

My youngest DS used to love watching YouTube but I was not happy with some of the content on seemingly innocent videos that he would watch. I blocked YouTube and YouTube mobile on his iPad but somehow at the age of 6 he found a way of accessing YouTube via some games apps. So they were deleted too. He now has the YouTube Kids app which is much safer but we still supervise him on that.

YouWereRight · 23/11/2018 22:08

Surely the point of YouTube is that it's unregulated, and anybody can upload anything they like. If you want pre approved content, stick to CBBC.

Ilovealexa · 23/11/2018 22:12

Yessssss people stop leaving YouTube to babysit your kids.

disneyspendingmoney · 23/11/2018 22:13

From the outset of their YouTube use I sat with them and went
That's ok
That's not
Oh my god no.
Nope
Really nope

Yeh that's ok,
Bit weird but mostly harmless.

So they know what I consider acceptable or not. There have been a few hiccups.

A year or two ago there was the legend of zelda sex challenge going around year 3. That was a real WTF, when dd2 told me she was going to Google it.

I've set safe search and in the main they don't change it. If they do I want to see what it is they are watching. I also have a parental blacklist on the router and kid friendly DNS. But shit still leaks in.

I'm a cord cutter so YouTube is something we watch quite a bit of in the living room.

CheshireChat · 23/11/2018 22:14

JoggerBottom They're downright creepy and I can't imagine why would anyone want to watch R rated Paw Patrol!

Some of the ads annoy me as well as they're really not great for a younger kid. DS can't access YT on his own at all yet, but he's only 4 so I've all this to come.

HildaZelda · 23/11/2018 22:17

Oh my God. I'd never heard of her, but I've just had a look at her Instagram. Jesus. I honestly don't know how she can walk around on those legs. She really needs help.
The comments on there are just worrying. Young girls saying they'd love to look like her and commenting stuff like 'Body goals' and 'So jealous', 'Amazing figure' :(

CheshireChat · 23/11/2018 22:18

To everyone saying that we should ban YT altogether- there's also lots of cool content and educational stuff so it needs managing, not banning IMO.

And it's easier when they're little as they actually prefer a parent watching stuff with them, a 12 yo would rightfully be appalled to have mum/ dad breathing down their neck.

YouWereRight · 24/11/2018 10:13

Well if Article 13 of the EU's new copyright directive come into force, the vast majority of YouTube will be unavailable to the UK anyway, so the people who want YouTube banned may, sort of, get their wish.

SaveKevin · 24/11/2018 10:39

I think it’s bonkers kids tv is so heavily regulated yet YouTube is not.
We use kids YouTube and no earphones so it’s on in the living room. But I’ve no doubt stuff gets through.

FishCanFly · 24/11/2018 14:49

One of my personal hates. I rather let my kids play "age-inappropriate" games than be glued to youtube. Even child-appropriate content is idiotic and time-wasting.
