Driving with fogs lights on

Now that evenings are darker and a lot of morning and evening commutes require headlights to be on its the annual recurrence of the obnoxious drivers with their front fog lights always switched on.

Its dark. There is no fog. Your headlights do a good job of making you visible and lighting up the road ahead. Why do you have them on?!

We already have enough to deal with in the form of big SUVs and their overly bright, high angled Xenon/LED headlights blinding us. We don't need your fog lights too!

I notice maybe 1 in 10 cars with their fog lights on have one broken. I assume they dojt realise. They look like numpties. Quite often posh cars too

My understanding is that whilst normal headlights can be automatic, fog lights almost certainly have to be manually turned on in every type of car. So if you are someone who puts their fog lights on when it's dark please can you explain the thought process that's going on in your head as you turn them on?

AIBU to think drivers who have fog lights on when it is merely dark and there is no fog are a nuisance?

We live semi rural and this is my main annoyance, have invested in a dash cam because I am totally convinced I will at some point end up in an accident.

Village school is down a a narrow unlit country road, the village doesn’t possess a single street light!! It’s also fairly affuant and the main method of transportation used is a Range Rover or some over giant tank of a car [that is used for the school run only]

Fog lights are 10 times more dazzling than a full beam. Hence why its ILLEGAL to use them when not in fog.

I see loads of people using sodding fog lights when there's nothing resembling...utter twats 😡

But also lots of helpful drivers flashing me because I've got running lights on...can't bloody help it! Blame the Swedes!

Modern cars have fog lights..trust me.

Our 18 Reg VW Polo doesn't. And neither did its 64 reg prdecessor!

I think rear fog lights are a legal requirement but not front

Correct. And quite often they only appear as the trim level increases. Base spec may not have them as standard but mid range up may well do.

Only the bottom of the range trim level misses out by the looks of it.

Correction - both had rear foglights, but none at the front. And you have to have the front on main-beam before they become operational.

Yes, rear fogs are a legal requirement. Front fogs are present on most of the Polo range. No car needs main beam for the fog lights to work, usually only sidelights are required (I’ve never driven a car that required dipped beams) and it is illegal for front fog lights to operate without sidelights on at the very least.
