To dye my hair at home in future?

WeirdHandDryers · 23/11/2018 12:19

I always used to buy home dying kits but then got into going to hairdressers to get it done properly, however I find the whole process mind numbing, just sat for hours in one place and the result is rarely what I asked for.
Does anyone get by with home diy kits??

I do and it looks fine.
Work full time with busy weekends and can’t justfiy spending half the day in the hairdressers when I can do the whole lot including drying my hair in an hour at home.
Also the cost savings are huge £5 vs £50.

Bambinho · 23/11/2018 12:25

Yes, works absolutely fine for me. I think it helps that I have fairly short hair so the ends don't get overloaded and the condition stays good.

Shazafied · 23/11/2018 12:26

Yes I do, I’ve had it done at hairdressers before and didn’t like it and was fuming at the expense! I use nice n easy. As pp has said I have short hair (Bob) which helps x

FeralBeryl · 23/11/2018 12:28

I have got very long hair and always do my own. Lots of people including hairdressers are surprised it's not done by a professional.
You need to be aware of your hair type, the different shades that may impact your hair (eg ash colours in blonde can sometimes look a little green - counteracted by tomato purée Wink) and keep up with regular trims.

rosetulip · 23/11/2018 12:30

I went last year to get some brown streaks in my blonde hair. It turned out orange. I now do it myself for a fiver and it’s just how i like it.

bloodyhellimtired · 23/11/2018 12:54

I just buy Fudge hair dye online and mix it myself. Works fine.

Caprisunorange · 23/11/2018 12:55

Depends on the colour I think. Some need to be done by professionals (blond particularky) and some of the more vibrant colours looks cheap and nasty done at home tbh.

wrenika · 23/11/2018 12:56

I've nearly always done my own and it's been fine. The only time I had a hairdresser dye it was when bleach was involved and I only did that because it was a wee local hairdresser I've been to my who life and she only charged around £25 to dye my hair two colours.

Storm4star · 23/11/2018 12:56

I buy boxed dyes but have a little pasting brush and bowl and I get my DD to put it in for me. Works fine and like you, I can’t stand sitting in the hairdressers for hours.

Eliza9917 · 23/11/2018 13:04

I do mine myself, never had a problem except for the time I put a red toner for dark hair over my whole bleached head and ended up ginger (I was 15/16 tbf)

I do mine myself every month now.

vampirethriller · 23/11/2018 13:07

I've done mine for 22 years and only had one disaster (bleach.. )

DaysOfCurlySpencer · 23/11/2018 13:15

I have been doing my own for years, never came out the way I wanted when I went to hairdressers. Another benefit is not having to listen to talk about holidays and boyfriend problems.

Can do it at a time that suits, make a cup of tea that is drinkable and not have to go out in the rain too.

StripyHorse · 23/11/2018 13:39

I have just started dying my hair at home as the greys are getting too obvious if left to their own devices. I got loads of compliments about how shiny it looked.

I am a bit apprehensive about the next due though as I will need to put it on the roots first (instead of just slathering it all over). How do people manage to do this evenly?

Singlenotsingle · 23/11/2018 13:40

I use Nice n Easy. It costs £5, takes half an hour, and looks fine!!

handbagsandhairdryers · 23/11/2018 13:55

I've just started to as I was spending £££a in the salon and was never happy with the result. The greys are coming thick and fast now and i can't hang around!

ThistleAmore · 23/11/2018 14:23

Following with interest, as I'm afraid I may have fallen like a sucker for the 'box dyes are LITERALLY DEATH' chat from a hairdresser (I realise people have to protect their income streams!).

Do any hairdressers in particular recommend any particular brands? Apart from the expense in time and money, I have ASD and LOATHE being touched.

ToastedSandwichObsession · 23/11/2018 14:34

I use them all the time. I can't be doing with forking out all that money at the hairdressers. Superdrug's own brand one is the best on my mop and scalp.

flippinflop · 23/11/2018 15:03

My hair is silver all over apart from underneath at the back of my head which is still my old natural dark brown which can't be seen unless I wear my hair up (seldom)
Can anyone recommend a dye which will cover all my silver and not fade back to grey? I'm so bored with my colour even though I do get complements. The box dyes all seem to say 'covers up to 100% of greys' but almost 100% of my hair is grey so I'm dubious at taking the plunge!

Branleuse · 23/11/2018 15:07

it depends. I have always dyed my hair at home and its been fine, until recently, when im finding that the box colours seem to fade and not hold on to the grey for long enough in the shades I want, so ive been getting a hairdresser that works from home, so much cheaper than a salon, but more expensive than just buying a box

MereDintofPandiculation · 23/11/2018 15:35

The box dyes all seem to say 'covers up to 100% of greys' That's one of those advertising statements that looks as if it says something but doesn't. What it actually says is that it covers an unknown percentage which could be 99% but equally could be less than 1%.

haverhill · 23/11/2018 15:37

I use eSalon which is £20 including delivery. They mix it specially for you.

Eliza9917 · 23/11/2018 15:38

Age defy is supposed to be good but it only comes in a limited range of colours not black

Branleuse · 23/11/2018 15:40

age defy is good actually and i found it the best one when I had brown hair, but im ginger at the moment, and it doesnt do that shade or anywhere close

Pimpernell · 23/11/2018 15:40

Home dye is generally fine for brunettes, less so for blondes.

YesIDidNameChangeForThis · 23/11/2018 15:41

I use Dermav10. Costs £1 in Bodycare, or Home Bargains or B and M. Works just as well as the more expensive dyes I tried, and my hair is in lovely condition.
