To dye my hair at home in future?

WeirdHandDryers · 23/11/2018 12:19

I always used to buy home dying kits but then got into going to hairdressers to get it done properly, however I find the whole process mind numbing, just sat for hours in one place and the result is rarely what I asked for.
Does anyone get by with home diy kits??

My only reservation would be hair damage. I coloured someone's hair in the salon this week who uses Nice and Easy at home and her hair was trashed. I was surprised she still had hair left on her head.

She came in for a colour correction but in fairness she'd used box dye to lighten her hair and lightening is much harder than going darker.

A lot of the home dyes are much harsher than they need to be as they need a peroxide to cover all bases so just stick a bottle of 9% in the box which most people don't need.

Can you use a mobile hairdresser? When I do mobile clients I'm always happy to apply the colour and leave if the client would prefer to rinse and style it herself.

My husband does mine admittedly I only use Directions which is chemical free but it works amazingly he uses a tinting kit from poundland and I get constant compliments as a bonus it means I go through about 4 different hair colours a year Grin

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 23/11/2018 15:45

Following with interest as I'm fed up with paying out ££ at hairdresser for hi-lights

I always used to dye my own hair with Nice n Easy etc as a student but seem to have lost confidence as I've got older

Paperdolly · 23/11/2018 16:16

I have highlights and lowlights in my hair. Dark blonde. What colour and make would a knowledgeable person recommend?

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 23/11/2018 16:18

Olia is really good. I have quite long hair and find that this one comes with enough to do the whole lot.

I still sometimes get it done at the salon though, just not every single time.

Imissgmichael · 23/11/2018 17:26

Another one that uses olia. My hair is medium brown with a lot of grey mainly at the front around the parting area. I don’t comb it through though, it just goes on the roots. Sometimes I put a bit in a bowl and do the obvious bits.

I find some hairdressers argue with you about what you actually want and don’t seem to put the dye on all the grey.

Pimpernell · 23/11/2018 17:42

If anyone has been watching I'm A Celebrity and seen Holly's hair it should serve as a good warning to stay away from blonde box dye. Looks awful. So brassy.

(She's contractually obligated to use it as she's the face/barnet of Garnier Nutrisse.)

Briansbathrobe · 23/11/2018 17:46

I dyed mine at home yesterday for the first time in years. I used Olaplex with it, too. It looks great, no regrets at all.

PinguDance · 23/11/2018 17:50

I henna mine (which means I can’t dye it with box dye anymore/for ages so I’ve committed myself to something I can’t get out of) and the last time I was at the hairdressers he was very complimentary and asking if it was natural or where I’d had it done etc. He was a bit wrong footed by the henna answer! I used to dye it red/brown myself all the time and got lots of compliments but went to their hairdresser for blonde and highlights etc.

Bluntness100 · 23/11/2018 17:55

I am brunette and use nice and easy at home, I genuinely can't see a difference when the hair dresser does it and I can't be arsed sitting there for hours to get the same result as I'd get in half an hour at home,

Rarfy · 23/11/2018 17:58

I would go with loreal dyes as loreal is a popular brand used in salons.

Unfortunately if ypu have highlights or lowlights you wont achieve the same look with a box dye.

If you hair is dyed already be sure to choose a dye around the same base colour e.g. if you are medium brown go for medium brown colours with different tones. If you google you should be able to find a base colour chart you should either go the same base or darker. You cant go lighter with a box dye.

Childrenofthesun · 23/11/2018 17:59

I switched to home due to save money. It looks fine and not much different to the salon dye. The only trouble I had was when I chose a colour that was too dark, so I would go for a slightly lighter shade.

Fuzzywig · 23/11/2018 18:00

I struggle with a disability - the last time I tried to dye my hair it wasn’t the best but it was ok. I mentioned it to my hairdresser who said to take the home diy kit in and she would do it for me - charging me a fiver plus whatever else I was having done. Not a top not salon but it sounds ideal to me.

SorryBaby · 23/11/2018 18:03

Ooh I do...even balayage the ends.
Can't cut it myself though....

I'll show you mine if you show me yours?

Ask your hairdresser what colour she uses for you then purchase and do it at home that's what I do. Use Wella Kolestan - it's great - works out cheaper than home dye boxes or hairdressers- I have long dark hair with bright white roots that need doing every two weeks. The only bit I'm not ace at is the back but I do enough to get me through for about a year without a full root colour at hairdressers

ferrier · 23/11/2018 18:08

Blonde here and prefer home dyes. One tenth the cost and better results. But I'm not going far off my natural colour, just making it a bit brighter.

InsomniacAnonymous · 23/11/2018 18:10

I always dye my hair at home. I use L'Oréal Excellence. It covers all grey, doesn't drip, looks very natural and leaves my hair shiny and soft.

RadioDorothy · 23/11/2018 18:15

Ooh glad someone has posted this, thanks OP. I've had semi-permanent colour (dark brown), twice a year by a hairdresser, to cover my greys and rather patchy porous hair. Semi permanent is shit for that actually, but they told me it would be glossier and less damaging.

But at the moment I just can't justify the expense, so I'm reluctantly researching the wisdom of doing it myself. I always used to dye my own, but it was shorter then - these days it's bra strap length, wavy and quite thick. I'm not sure I have the patience or mental resilience for a home dye job.

I've been looking at Schwartzkopf "omegaplex" cool dark brown, that seems to get good reviews? I've been and had the broken ends trimmed today.

ARoomSomewhere · 23/11/2018 18:16

I use nice and easy but go quite a few colours lighter blonde.

i'd like to try eSalon.

haverhill would you recommend?

lanbro · 23/11/2018 18:17

I have dark brown hair and always use home dyes, anything from dark red to dark purple to blue black to chocolate brown. Never ever had a problem but being dark there's not much that can go wrong really. I usually just buy what's on offer, don't have a preferred brand although find that even permanent colours fade which is good for regrowth

lanbro · 23/11/2018 18:18

When my hair was longer I always used 2 boxes as is quick thick, only need one now it's shoulder length

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 23/11/2018 18:19

ARoomSomewhere - which shade you you use and what is your natural colour?

My natural colour is mouse (very dark 'dirty' blonde) without any grey and wondering if I can get away with going lighter with an all over home colour

Yesindeed123 · 23/11/2018 18:21

I have a great local hairdresser who will put your own dye on your hair for a tenner. So I buy the box dye( nice and easy) take it to the salon, he put it in my hair, I then go home( with a show cap on as I make a dash to the car) wait for it develop then wash it out at home.
I get the professional coverage result with less time and for 15 quid!

Tattybear16 · 23/11/2018 18:25

Red head here using garner nutrisse, love my home dye job. Had it done at the hair dressers only once and hated it. £80 lighter never again. Currently 2 for £10 in Wilkos, so I’ve stocked up.

ThistleAmore · 23/11/2018 18:27

L'Oreal are a bit 'problematic' for veggies/vegans as regards their animal testing record.

All Superdrug's products are cruelty-free/vegan - but what are the results like?
