To dye my hair at home in future?

WeirdHandDryers · 23/11/2018 12:19

I always used to buy home dying kits but then got into going to hairdressers to get it done properly, however I find the whole process mind numbing, just sat for hours in one place and the result is rarely what I asked for.
Does anyone get by with home diy kits??

I did mine for years, hairdresser for a trim, then the grey came in so I needed highlights, lowlights. I found an angel in Sarah, who would slap the colour on, do my nails, wax my eyebrows, chin hairs, the time flew by. She moved away it has taken me six months to find a new Sarah, now I can once again, get dyed, waxed and filed in the same appointment, bliss.

I'm mousy brown with greys now too and i use a light blonde colour (was 97 before they changed the numbers!) on v long hair.
I get compliments on it even from my hairdresser!

But i had a big Op 4m ago and have had quite a bit of hair loss so i'd like something gentler for a bit to give my hair a break/

Is it normal for my head (especially scalp ) to itch insanely the morning after I've had my roots ( blonde ) done at the hairdresser's?

Cheesybiscuits01 · 23/11/2018 19:01

Sorry baby what kit so you use and how easy is it to do the ends?

CraftyGin · 23/11/2018 19:05

I did many years of going to a salon at £100 a pop. I hated the 3 hours of my life there, every 8 weeks (5 weeks of which involved horrible roots).

Now I do Clairol at home, every 3 to 4 weeks.

SorryBaby · 23/11/2018 19:09

Cheesy

Nice and easy on the top, I think 79. It's dark brown. Don't go for anything with 'warm' in it unless you're happy with red tones on roots.
I used an olia on the bottom, it obvs won't go super light because my hair is so dark (naturally mousy). I just brushed it through, some thin bits, some thick and some underneath. Make sure it's not in a straight line at the back! You can do just a few bits at the very ends, depends how you like it. You can see the colour develop so take it off when you're happy. Condition the ends heavily!

Also, another tip- put Vaseline all round the edge of your face, smother your ears and back of your neck. If you drip any dye, it stops it clinging to the skin so much.

Pimmsypimms · 23/11/2018 19:11

I always do it myself, I can’t justify the expense, I always buy the same dye, it’s a semi permanent, so doesn’t block grow out and I usually get 2 boxes for a tenner!

RadioDorothy · 23/11/2018 19:20

I've just looked at e-salon and it looks quite good, but when I searched for reviews on MN some said it left a heavy, waxy residue on the hair?

naicepineapple · 23/11/2018 19:22

Why does it take hours? What do you get done?

I get a cut & colour in 90 minutes.

IMO box dye usually looks crap.

liverpoolnana · 23/11/2018 19:25

I use Nice n Easy, and as I have short hair, I only use half the pack, so even cheaper. It's possible to halve the contents quite easily, and mix them in an old beaker or spare bottle. Nice and Easy is good for this, as the contents are all liquid. L' Oreal (I think) has the developer in a tube, so isn't as easy to halve (but not impossible). The unused stuff seems to keep OK for the 4 or 5 weeks in between, obviously with the tops done up tightly, and unmixed.

madmum5811 · 23/11/2018 19:27

It takes longer in some salons because you are part of a production line, waiting for , colour, wash, rinse, cut, blow dry. Years ago my hairdressers was always overbooked, my lovely colourist was running around doing half a dozen women at a t ime.

frogbike · 23/11/2018 19:37

I used L’Oréal professional for years but I have long black hair and was pretty easy. I always got told how lovely and shiny my hair was. I still had hair cut at salon and they didn’t seem to notice and always complimented me on how healthy my hair was. I worked FT and just could not manage covering greys and the whole sacrificing the weekend for my hair to be dyed.
I don’t work now and have balayage so I go salon only but would consider going back to box as so expensive doing things this way!

myname666 · 23/11/2018 19:51

Ive used dark brown box dyes on and off for years on my medium/dark brown hair. Now starting to grey and have fallen for the blonde hides greys better thing!
Booked into the salon as I don't dare mess with going lighter myself.

Those of you saying you have mobile hairdressers do the colour then leave you to wash it out, is that all over colour or has anyone done that with foils?

Pimpernell · 23/11/2018 19:51

@Iamtheoneandonly2018 watch out for intense itching. Sounds like you might have an allergy to PPD. I don't mean to be a drama queen but there have been fatalities from this. Something to keep in mind and maybe seek alternatives.

madmum5811 · 23/11/2018 20:04

I like the balayage because it lasts three months, my hairdresser is graduating my hair from the grey down now, so eventually fingers crossed I will have lovely grey hair, that is the plan anyway. This is her effort for me. Before and after pictures.

eSalon is fine, no waxy residue. It’s basically a posh box dye which is mixed individually.

Iamtheoneandonly2018 · 23/11/2018 21:09

Pimp- what's PPD please,?

Holidaycountdown · 23/11/2018 21:24

I go to the hairdressers twice a year and colour at home inbetween...my lovely hairdresser gave me instructions for using the professional dyes (L’Oreal Inoa or DIA Richesse/DIAlite) hair is almost waist length and dark with purple streaks and costs about £20 to do myself vs £120 at the salon, have used box dyes in the past and I definitely notice the difference in condition.

Frequency · 23/11/2018 22:01

PPD = parades. They're in all hair coloyrs but in a higher concentration in darker colours.

It sounds like you have a sensitivity towards something (probably ppd) rather than a full blown allergy but I would be vigilant about skin testing before every application. Allergies can develop at any time during your life and ppd reactions can indeed be fatal.

Frequency · 23/11/2018 22:02

*Paradyes.

Dowser · 23/11/2018 22:37

My hairdresser comes to the house.
Blonde Streaks, trim ( it’s mid back length) and blow dry
£22

She’s been coming about 15 years
And she’s coming on Monday...yayyy
I’m 66, got quite a bit of grey coming in, but still loads of brown , so blonde streaks seem to be the best option

I don’t suit lots of brown hair round my face. My skin tone has always been too pale
I’ve had blonde streaks for almost 50 years
I don’t think I’ll stop now.

Childrenofthesun · 24/11/2018 08:56

ThistleAmore

I have used Superdrug own and find them no different to any of the others. I use the all-over dye about once every 4 months then use their root touch-up dye in between.

ByTheSea · 24/11/2018 09:03

I have thick longer curly hair so can't do it myself but DH has been doing it for me for years now. We save loads this way and I would not go back to having it done in the salon. He has also done DD1's hair a bunch of times.

princesstiasmum · 24/11/2018 10:17

I have rarely gone to a salon, and never been happy with it, paid £65 a few years ago for my sons wedding ,was there fir hours and they had to redo it because it was patchy, this was for highlights, always do it myself now, and it has never gone wrong
I used to home perm it myself too, when perms were in, but before i got highlights, always turned out well
These days it is mainly just blonde, i dont have much grey, but what i have is more silver than grey,
I do my roots in a slightly darker blonde and it lasts for ages, and just looks like the blonde is just growing out, and try not to go over my whole head, which leaves my hair in better condition, also use a bit of bleach [Jereme Russell] on fringe and closest to face
I use nice and easy usually, but it doesnt last long on the roots
I coudnt afford salon prices,
I have a mobile hairdresser come twice -3 times a year to trim, she also charges about £45 for colour so do my own

ByTheSea · 06/05/2019 08:25

My husband does a great job on mine with two boxes of L'Oréal Creme Excellence.
