So we're here in New York it's -7 and it's amazing! We have a list as long as our arm of stuff we want to do but are there any seasoned travellers who can recommend anything a bit different that most people don't do?

Also very very desperate for some non chain food ideas or delis or diners people can recommend? We got stung yesterday 🤦‍♀️

There is a fab food market in Brooklyn called Dekalb. we ate there lots in April this year. very close to the underground.
lots of choice and not too expensive.

we also went clothes shopping there because it was close to the hotel and easier to navigate. more like a high st

ihatethecold · 22/11/2018 13:29

also the food tours in Chelsea market are brilliant fun esp if you have teens with you.

I really liked the meatball shop on the upper east side for lunch earlier this year. And the tenement museum is a bit different from the usual attractions - you need to book though.

You know it’s Thanksgiving today right?? So everything will be a little crazy??? For good food try union square food market which has lots of stalls and is also near abc carpet and Home which is lovely for a browse. It’s pretty well known but the Frick is the most perfect museum (I think). Also for a different vibe, head over to Brooklyn (park slope, Williamsburg, Brooklyn heights). Enjoy. Lucky you!

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 22/11/2018 13:35

The Christmas market and ice skating rink in Bryant Park is very lovely at the moment.
But yes. It’s Thanksgiving so it will probably be crazy today and tomorrow.

we went here:

was great.

Breakfast at the Pershing Square Diner next to Grand Central.

A wander round Park Slope in Brooklyn is always worth it

NewYoiker · 22/11/2018 14:10

@MrsBlythe yes haha! We're watching the parade from our hotel window ❤️❤️ I've already gone out and got bagels and coffee for breakfast. Will be going to a bar later to watch the nfl but that's it for today!!

The High Line - but wrap up warm!

Letsnotargue · 22/11/2018 15:28

We got the cable car over to Roosevelt Island which was fun. It was freezing cold when we were there and the park was practically deserted. A nice view of the East-side skyline (UN building etc) and peace and quiet.

I also loved the Museum of the City of New York. Lots of information about how NY started, through its different occupations etc. We saw Joel Schumacher there at a gallery of futuristic designs for the city.

ACurlyWurly · 22/11/2018 16:00

@letusnotargue i was about to say the same thing! Also Pershing Square

Boxingmum · 22/11/2018 16:05

I'm here too, don't think you'll be able to miss Macy's parade today!!
There's so much to do here, have fun!!

NewYoiker · 22/11/2018 18:49

@Boxingmum it's so so cold today! The parade was fantastic. Tomorrow is Times Square and Black Friday shopping I feel! We have tickets for the American football on Sunday ❤️ can't wait for that!!

See if you can book tickets for the Vertical Tour at St John the Divine. Assuming you don’t suffer from vertigo, that is. Grin

I’m so jealous!

Andrews coffee shop at 430 (ish) on 7th.

barfotoliv · 22/11/2018 19:01

Catch restaurant and rooftop bar in the meatpacking district. Amazing food and great atmosphere!

AhhhhThatsBass · 22/11/2018 19:03

Also love the high line for nosing in peoples windows. It is quite touristy though. Enjoy.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 22/11/2018 19:04

Me too - I’m a nosey bugger! It overlooks a really crap pizza place (about halfway along on a corner - I forget its name - dire pizza and awful ‘service).
