To make a complaint about Hermes delivery driver?

I was sat in my living room watching tv and saw a man walk past my window Hmm then I heard a loud banging noise which scared me half to death. The man then posted something through my door.

Turns out he didn't bother to knock and just decided to throw my parcel over the side gate! Then post a slip saying 'sorry I missed you'.

my front door is in my living room he Did not knock at all. I actually watched him walk past my window!

Luckily the parcel wasn't broken but it was in a big cardboard box so could have contained anything. It had a remote control toy car so luckily that didn't break.

Why go through the effort of posting a slip and walking further to throw the parcel over the gate?

Aibu to complain about this? It made me really annoyed and can't see any logic to it at all.

I wouldn’t bother. These drivers are paid a pittance and have a lot of deliveries to make in a day..

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 22/11/2018 07:42

That's really bad, he could have really damaged your goods. I would complain yes. It might not get you anywhere but I think you should all the same.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 22/11/2018 07:43

I wouldn’t bother. These drivers are paid a pittance and have a lot of deliveries to make in a day..

And??? What would have happened has he smashed up the remote control car? Do you think the OP should have to suck it up and buy a new one?

crispysausagerolls · 22/11/2018 07:46

Be grateful you received your package! Mine has lied the last 2 days and said he tried to deliver and I wasn’t home. It’s an urgent package so I’ve been sitting practically next to the door all fucking day. The LIES 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

CondomsLubricantAndFlapjack · 22/11/2018 07:46

They would claim it was like that from the warehouse.

What will it achieve?

NicePieceOfPlaid · 22/11/2018 07:50

Complain. Some other customer may get their stuff broken. If he's sacked it serves him right.

JollyAndBright · 22/11/2018 07:50

I know someone who is (or was) a Hermes driver.

He told me that the reason they don’t knock is the have literally seconds to deliver a parcel, otherwise they get behind schedule.
Knocking and talking to a person, takes a lot more time than just leaving the parcel in a ‘secure’ place and posting a note.

They also have to deliver the parcel because they only get paid when the parcel is delivered, they can only ‘hold’ so many deliveries at once so if they have to keep it it they miss out of the payments of another delivery, and attempting to redeliver takes time.

Also the more deliveries they can fit into their schedule the more money they make, which is why they want to deliver as quickly as possible.

Ive had this too. Heard the letterbox go, went to look and there was a card - he had ticked the box that said 'called today but no one at home'. (he definitely hadnt knocked either). I went out to try and catch him but he had gone. The card said 'parcel at side of property'. I looked everywhere and couldnt find it. My husband had a look, and found it inside my green wheelie bin, where I have to put all my food wastage, so its quite smelly in there. I was horrified!

Argeles · 22/11/2018 07:55

Definitely complain.

I detest Hermes. They have wasted several days of my time waiting for parcels which were then not actually delivered, and the customer chat system is shite - the very best of luck to you when you use that.

The last time I ordered something from a company who unfortunately use Hermes, I waited in all day, then received a text just after 4pm telling me that my parcel had been delivered - it hadn’t. I did the online chat and they were completely useless. I spoke to all 5 neighbours in my building, but no one had any information.

In desperation, I started walking around the other properties on our development, and eventually found it by buzzing on the 5th block that I’d tried, and buzzing on all the intercoms and speaking to so many people. This was about 500 metres from my flat, and the only resemblance was a matching door number - but my parcel had been left there. I mean left too - just left outside her door, even though I’ve never even given them permission to leave it with a neighbour, let alone outside my door.

Sham company.

TheCyclist · 22/11/2018 07:56

The 'secure location' for a fairly valuable item that Hermes delivered to me was a puddle of water in my back yard. To get it there they must have lobbed it over a 7ft fence. And they didn't even leave a note. I no longer deal with any company that uses Hermes, if I can help it.

Complain.

hannah1992 · 22/11/2018 07:59

A Hermes delivery driver broke my front door a couple of years ago.

He had the parcel on his hands and instead of putting it down and knocking he kicked the bottom of the door hard enough to put his foot through the outside layer of PVC

I complained and received £50 compensation

BrightStarrySky · 22/11/2018 08:00

Yes complain. Hermes is one of the worst (although Yodel also bad). They treat the drivers terribly which leads to these types of shortcuts. The companies need to know customers are unhappy and this is because the drivers aren’t given enough time (so are takibg shortcuts). If we don’t all complain nothing will change.

BiggFactHunt · 22/11/2018 08:00

Hermes are crap. Paid for them to pick up a parcel from someone and driver to me and it was ‘lost in the warehouse’

I emailed them many a time along the lines of ‘How big is this fucking warehouse? What is it, Hogwarts?? Where is my parcel?’

They cared not one bit. Will never, ever use them again.

BiggFactHunt · 22/11/2018 08:00

*deliver not driver

PeroniZucchini · 22/11/2018 08:01

Unfortunately Hermes and I believe Yodel drivers are paid an absolute pittance and companies use them because they are cheap. I was disappointed to find out that jo Malone have recently switched to Hermes (you would think that their profits would mean a better delivery service but still...)

So I get that they are in a hurry... I get that stuff is dumped at my front door sometimes, but nothing will change until we the consumer vote with our feet or complain. In an ideal world these delivery companies would have to then realise that until they start paying their staff more and stop setting unrealistic targets they will not be used. And it will take big companies such as Jo Malone to be prepared to spend more on better quality delivery services. But for as long as they are cheap, companies will use them.

NonaGrey · 22/11/2018 08:02

I’m confused - he walked past your window carrying a parcel and you didn't go to meet him at the door?

Confused
PeroniZucchini · 22/11/2018 08:03

Trouble is you often don’t know who the courier is until you get a despatch note. My heart always sinks when I see Hermes or Yodel are lined up.

AndThereSaw · 22/11/2018 08:15

I send back anything that has been thrown over my fence and tell the company why. They have no idea where it might land.
First time it happened it was a bloody great kenwood chef in a huge box. Idiots.

Puffinhead · 22/11/2018 08:16

I would complain but have to add that we have a lovely Hermes delivery man. Very polite and when we had road works on our street he even parked up away from the house and walked out of his way to get to us - a proper trooper! Yodel, on the other hand....

StrongTea · 22/11/2018 08:22

So lucky here, all our couriers are great, think they have a very stressful job. I wouldn’t complain, your parcel was fine.

Amanduh · 22/11/2018 08:23

You can complain. Absolutely nothing will happen though.

Alfie190 · 22/11/2018 08:24

@GreatDuckCookery

No of course I would not expect her to have to pay for a new item had it been broken. But it wasn’t.

lalaloopyhead · 22/11/2018 08:30

My Hermes delivery person is brilliant, if I get something delivered to home by mistake she will bring it to my work address because she knows I won't be in! Bit embarrassing though that I do that much online shopping that she made the connection....

I do feel for these drivers being under so much time pressure - does it excuse not doing a job well? Not really, but I can see why they do it.

I was once waiting in for a parcel and when I rang up the delivery people (TNT I think) I was told that I had signed for it that morning...turned out the delivery driver had signed my name and left it down the side of my house, which is more of an alleyway so not even secure. That one annoyed me.

Unfortunately a complaint might result in a telling off, but it won't make these delivery companies change their ways or pay the drivers an amount that allows time for doing the job properly.

MemoryOfSleep · 22/11/2018 08:34

They're awful. I used to work in a call centre for a company that used hermes to deliver. Oh the complaints! The worst was one that had been thrown over a fence and into a pond.

QueenoftheNights · 22/11/2018 08:41

Mine is the same. I have a good relationship with them- they leave parcels in a safe place if I'm out and know the 'system' but even when I am in they just bang on the door , dump it and run. I don't even have time to get from one end of the house to the front door before they are off. They drive around the village like a maniac.

Worse though was someone (not Hermes) who left a White Company parcel in my wheelie bin .
